Back in the day, around 2009 i think, a mate of mine at the time, a part of my crew of mates, who i knew through the rave/festival scene, but he was also a massive bird nerd, actually helped breed & successfully release about 30 Orange Crested Kakariki Parakeets into another valley in the Hurinui region that they had disappeared from. I cant remember which valley it was, but i remember it was one with no existing population, but also had a very active pest control programme. To my knowledge it & others has been successful enough that there is talks of at some point reintroducing them to Banks Peninsula, in the same way that Tui have succesfully been reintroduced. Which is pretty cool!
Getting one's head stuck in a hole in a log you yourself have dug is, well, a pretty embarrassing way to go... Silly, accident-prone birds indeed! Strange considering how smart and/or clever most parrot species are. Poor dumb, but pretty, little birdies!
@@SatanenPerkele Omg! What a relief you found her and were able to get her out! That must've been so scary!! I'd guess maybe a bit funny after she was safe (like many emergencies are)? 😉 I'm feeling more and more attached to these birds... maybe because they remind me of my sister's dog, who would totally get his head stuck in a hole he dug if his ball was inside. He tends to lose all intelligence when his bouncy balls are involved. Lol
I'm with you! I keep voting Grey Petrel, but it keeps losing out to the "new bird"... 😒 Maybe next week Henry will put up a _third_ Petrel to vote for, so ALL options will be Petrels. Lol
It's called "Winged Transformations". There's a playlist of it on RUclips to listen to. I'll update the description with all of the other music when I have time.
Birds are fascinating to have in the wild but sadly birds are going to extinct at least some people are trying there best to save them. Great video Henry learned something new, keep up the great work.
"One chewed a hole in a log, stuck his head in and died." Remembered me on some guys in the military, who did comparable 'funny' stunts with their equipment... At least, birds are not smarter than humans.
It’s excellent to have a bird of the week episode longer than 3 minutes. These guys are very cute.
Looking at the ones I have left to do, they'll be a lot more like this one to come. ;)

These guys have just been reintroduced into The Brook Waimarama sanctuary in Nelson
Excellent news!
@@HenrythePaleoGuy Yeah it's awesome. it's a huge sanctuary full of mature beech forest, perfect for Kakariki Karaka!
What incredible red eyes they have.
Quite piercing!
This New Zealand Parakeet species,is one very lovely, beautiful,& cute birds and this was a great video on them
Most definitely. Thanks for watching!
It's comforting to know help is out there for these lovely birds. May they keep free from disease and continue to breed well.
I hope so too.

Awesome video.
Thanks, man!
I recognize some of the music being from 1992's PBS Dinosaurs! Wish I knew the exact name of the piece.

@KAHANU ERMEYAS-TULU yeah I’d never get a bird
The reason why they where discovered twice is because kakarikis breed like crazy I know because I use have a whole flock of them

When I see "botw" I instinctively think of breath of the wild
Sometimes I do as well. :)
How many kākāriki species are there? I had a red-fronted one years ago. Best pet, funny and destructive 🤣

Generally not, although there's still a lot to be explored.
Alright, Kiwis... Don't fuck it up this time! You got a 3rd chance.
Im a bit embarrassed I'm a New Zealander and didnt even know about this bird
Well now you do. :)
I christen thee... Birb-a-derp.
Good video. I find the birds name confusing.
Weekly highlight
I'm glad it is! More to come. :)
