- Exile On Princes Street
I saw a blue umbrella in Princes Street Garden
Heading out west for the Lothian Road
An evening news stuffed deep in the pocket
Little did I know that even a heavy load
I found us walking Grierson's dockyards
Where the only thing working was foreign film crews
Making an impressive documentary
For the big news
To the satellite
And all we're left with is the black black oil
With a sense of pride and identity
The waters left behind we shouldn't forget
Laid low in the books of history
I saw the starlings wheel round Georgian spires
Gathering on patrol in the skies
In the distance burns the flame of Grangemouth
And the dream is lost
Everything what it could inspire
From the take you know there is no distance
How we talk about in the secret affairs
Taking our ride into the distance
To be what it was or could have been
What I should have said
And all we're left with is the black black oil
With a strong sense of national pride
'Till we take some more steps to unity
Take it back to me
Take it back
In a city run out of luck
And all we're left with is the black, black oil
With a strong sense of national pride
Calling the ... for identity
What it meant to me, what I said
What we could have had
I saw a blue umbrella in Princes Street Garden
Heading out west for the Lothian Road
An evening news stuck deep in the pocket
Little did I know that he'd fall
Carrying a heavy load
And all we're left with is the black black oil
With a strong sense of national pride
Calling a name in the sake of unity
What it means to me you'll never know
You'll never know
I see myself forced in servant exile
Turning around at another's command
All I want to see is identity
What I could have been
What I did
Could have been
Internal exile
Internal exile

This is one o their very best songs. Even in rough, demo form, this is a masterpiece. Anyone who doubts that Fish has a poet’s soul should listen to this.
I have been a Marillion Fan since the late 80's....this is the first time I heard this song. Wow!!
Simply beautiful.
The thing about this track is that is so focused, all the musicians are on full pelt and in harmony, each fighting for the foreground, Its one of my favourite all time Marillion tracks, the irony being it never made it to the final cut in this form. Lyrics are as strong as the music, bass, guitar, lyric, keyboards all smashing it, prob the drummer working flat out leading the game.....fantastic poetic lyric, the words themselves paint an awesome and evocative picture, the smashing drums, sublime bass, looping keyboards and vocal delivery just hit the spot, bang on, time after time, it never ages, its a patriotic masterpiece.
Welcome to the best band ever
Grandissimi Marillion, sempre nel mio cuore ❤️, non fermatevi mai!!!!!!max di Brembate, Bergamo, Italia.
What a gem!
For god sake... I love marillion for about 20 years and... I hear it for the first time - its like u find a treasure :)
Same for me, even more meaningful when you live in Edinburgh....
So true. Love this song.
Same

Gud shout mate, still gud now,👍
I've listened to marillion since 2004 and I'm just listening to this song for the first time, thanks for posting it
Oh I love it for so many years
One of the more beautiful tunes this band has written.
The drummer works quite as hard as the lyrics of songwriter fish. The jester in him should never die.
These demos show bits of what became vigil and exile ..and seasons and holidays ...we all still wonder what that fifth album ( the anxiety attack the domino) would of been like...what and were the concept was going especially with using fugazi again
Amen! this song is amazing!
Simply wonderful ....
This number is probably the most underestimated number of the 'Clutching at Straws' album. Try to see this number in conjunction with 'Heart of Lothian' on the 'Misplaced Childhood' album. That number referred to 'The Royal Mile' which is old-town Edinburg, whilst 'Princes Street' is new-town Edinburg. If you want to dig deeper in the soul of Fish, then this number is one of the one's you shouldn't miss...
Nice Song Sound ... ... ... 😎
Thank-you for this gift, Fish, I will keep this song in my heart.

Beautiful.
fantastica bend e fantastico album
Fish was definitely the man.
My first ever listen right here. Bowled over by the beauty and the emotion of it. Love the chiming Rothery guitar.

Kocham I love it ♥
I like this version so much , it is so diffrent from the one that Fish did in I"nternal exile" album. i kinda like this one better - it has a Marillion vibe lol. (the scottish scent is nice too) great posting thanx!
Marillion con Fish lo mejor.
By the end of 2014 none of us need to be exiles in our own country any more. I bet you didn't see the opportunity arising when you wrote this song Fish. Thanks to the internet for dispelling the lies otherwise our people would still be living in ignorance.
Got the original when it first came out. When that was stolen a few years later, I HAD to replace it! the Bonus material, including this song, would have made a great album by itself.

Rejected from the CAS album ended up on Fish's solo album, titled Eternal Exile.
Thanks fish n the gang ,, one of a kind
yes!

These are also the opening lyrics to Fish’s “Internal Exile”. I love how he interlinks songs at different times during his career. Legend.

I always thought the demos on this bonus disc were better than anything on any Marillion album afterwards, Fish had a few great moments on Vigil though. Such a shame when you think about what could have been.
Hey there laddie, internal exile....
leur dernier et meilleur album, bien d'accord pour dire qu'après ça plus rien

@ flaneller
Well, if Season's End and Easter are "banal scribblings", I'll take them every time over a quite a lot of what Fish wrote. Why can't you Fish heads just accept that Hogarth is different; just as good as Fish (who I really like too) but different.
Because these people are NARROW MINDED. Beethoven and Mozart are equally genious... that's all
Hogart never could replace Fish. Never ever
Pudo haber sido el siguiente disco con Fish pero ya han pasado mas de 20 años y la historia continua...
I love you Madeleine Mebs!
RUDASPITBULOS ,OK,OK,OK
Fantastic version, but I prefer the album cut.. Marillion with & after Fish are two different musical experiences. Hogarth does nothing for me so I stopped following although I have tremendous respect for them and in particular the band...
yes, the modern Marillion were the first for fan funded albums which for the music industry is awesome!!!!
Fabulous, but I still prefer the "real" version of Internal Exile.
Imo this is far better
