    Thank you for sharing your experience! It's challenging, as the SWD media channels are becoming more saturated, to identify people who are sharing authentic experiences or just shooting down a learning or professional development approach just to sell their own programs or courses. I really appreciate your honesty and intentions with this video. I'm starting a 6-month bootcamp in August.

    • @EmilyDowgialo
      @EmilyDowgialo  3 года назад +2

      Hey Michael, good luck in August in the bootcamp!! I agree, that's why it was so difficult for me to find information when I was doing a bootcamp. It felt like everyone was just trying to sell their own agenda. Thank you so much for watching my video, I'm really glad it was helpful and I know you'll kill it in the bootcamp 🙌

      Hey Cristian! I'm about ~3 months into a 6 month program. Your experience will vary depending on the bootcamo you attend, im attending one of the better ranked/rated bootcamps in my area(Alchemy Code Labs). It's definitely worth it. Not only am I learning coding faster and with more best practices than I would've on my own, but they offer networking, resume, interviewing, career services, and computer science support overall. I would recommend being picky about the school you attend, but its worth every penny.

    I’m currently in a part time coding bootcamp (6months) and I can definitely attest to EVERY POINT 😂 I still work full time and have other daily responsibilities and it’s a STRUGGLE lol. One more thing I can add is that if you’re not already experienced, you are ALWAYS confused lol. I still haven’t hit the signature “everything will click” moment… pray for me.. 😂💀

    I did a cyber security Boot Camp and everything was just as she said and there is an emotional component because every week feels like you’re barely hanging on by a thread and as the months roll on you just can’t wait for the experience to be over and then you want to start looking for jobs but you’re burned out.
    But the one thing I think is the most true is that you need to help your mental health and self discipline prepared and I’m a sensitive person but I found myself very emotional so if you have any resources make sure that you’re in a place where you’re not too depressed or that you couldn’t have people lift you up

I can understand the confused I would like to get to the point where im more confident and knowledeable. Still waiting for everything to click. Thank you for sharing your story very inspiring. it is mind blowing but can see why engineers would take a bootcamp its so much new info and you can stay up to date and competent. My boot camp towards the end teaches you technical interview and soft skills.

  • @rhythmblack3830
    @rhythmblack3830 2 года назад +12

    Thank you for demystifying these bootcamps because I've been watching a lot of videos about people's BootCamp experience but they've never mentioned any of the information you're sharing now. I did not know that there was an admissions % for bootcamps, I assumed that anyone that paid was able to join these bootcamps on the day it started. I knew they were intense, but for it to be intense enough that you need working knowledge as a programmer to be very successful in the camps is kind of misleading when so many of the bootcamps are marketed towards people with no knowledge of code. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Hey Emily this is one of the best takes on coding bootcamps I've come across here on youtube! I was one of the engineer types at my bootcamp and while it seemed to others I was breezing through the material, I can attest that all the personal and financial stuff, stress, etc. are very real and it was no picnic! Do you have any advice for people very used to technical problem solving to help people from other backgrounds feel more comfortable working with them?

    • @EmilyDowgialo
      @EmilyDowgialo  2 года назад +2

      Thank you so much, Paul! I love that you're thinking about how you can be an ally to those who are new to the field coming from different backgrounds. For me personally, I would have loved to partner with someone like you during class so I could learn from you and see how you approach a technical challenge. If I partnered with someone who came from an engineering field I found I would get lost when partnered with them because they could get from A to B quickly without telling me how they got there and it would have made a huge difference if they had slowed down and taken the time to think out loud.

    I do agree that the technical interview is a separate learning curve because that's your opportunity to talk what you know and sometimes if you're not a software developer that's been doing it for at least a couple years you may not be able to articulate and so the technical interview boot camp actually is a good thing but the price tag is too high it should have been added to your regular boot camp it should have been included as like a lab

    I am starting my journey into coding and a big change in career. Have 0 experience but I am currently doing a lot of research and also started the cs50 course (only in week 2 so far!). How much self-taught experience do you think it’s necessary to be ready for a bootcamp? Do you think doing the cs50 class could get me to a good starting point?

    • @bri4498
      @bri4498 2 года назад +1

      cs50 is great, and definitely helps, but it is kind of hard specially if you have 0 experience. For a complete beginner I highly recommend checking out freecodecamp on youtube. Whatever topic or language you want to learn just search it with their name. It's also hard to know what to even start learning first, so it depends if you want to be a web developer, then front end, back end or full stack. Or using languages like C, python, java etc. But freecodecamp on youtube has it all. I also recommend coursera.

    Math and Coding need interest and drive. A lot of interest and a lot of drive. Spending 18000 dollars or 14.5 dollars on a class makes little difference.

  • @paulholsters7932
    @paulholsters7932 3 года назад +2

    Why not just quitting your job and learn it all yourself? At least it’s way cheaper. And good books actually teach you anything you need to know so. And the small things you can learn them through videos. It’s insane to pay 17000 dollar for something you can learn with books and vids for only 300 or so dollar. And you can do it a bit more at your own pace or the pace of your wallet at least. Like this you can learn it all in a half a year or maybe a bit longer.

      Self learning is definitely a great option, I agree! I tried it and it didn't work for me so I chose a coding bootcamp, even though it was very pricy. Had the self learning worked out for me I would have gone that route.

    • @paulholsters7932
      @paulholsters7932 3 года назад +1

      @@EmilyDowgialo You are right. I didn't mean that you hadn't considered that route in the first place. But I imagine some people might not see that as an option so that is why I posted this comment. But I must admit I had a computer education myself and being self-thaught looks like something EXTREMELY difficult to me if you do not have some base to start with, so at least you know where to start. But I learned a lot myself through books, vids, google and personal projects because the education I got was very very poor, just enough to get started. But to summarize I would never recommand to do it without an education if you have the chance and you can affort it. Anyway my utter respect for you to have succeeded in this. I know for a fact that is quite an achievement!
