I’ve read that the people on the show either had already figured out, or did so not long after, that Patsy’s “Talent Scout” was actually her mother - but they didn’t care. The show was called “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts”. Godfrey has been a huge national radio and TV personality since the late 1940s.
Godfrey had considerable power at CBS… was very authoritative… and ruled the entire show. He had to approve every act personally. Great to see Patsy and her mother actually fooled him.
Godfrey’s show aired live every Monday night. Wasn’t unusual for Godfrey to inform the CBS execs the Saturday before that he wanted to do the show remotely from Virginia, Florida, California etc… and they would have to scramble all weekend to make it happen.
The clip of her singing is NOT from this actual show. Only the audio recording of this program has survived, so we have no record of what this appearance really looked like. I read that up till then, Patsy’s regular costume for performing on country music TV shows had been a cowgirl outfit, but for this national appearance she was taken to a New York department store to get a more elegant-looking dress. That would be more appropriate for the full orchestra backing she had here.
most confusing thing ever and it never will be solved. Read one place broke the applause meter and godfrey says you won--then you read at several places in comments that she did not--never with a clear explanation by an expert.
It's all a little confusing and I'm a big fan of Patsy Cline but I don't quite understand how well her original record of "walkin' after midnight" did, and how long was it before she had a REAL hit, which I guess was "I Fall to Pieces" because if you watch the movie SWEET DREAMS it seems like she struggled for quite a while after her first recording of "walkin' after midnight" - I don't know how accurate the movie is (thought it's a very good movie with Jessica Lange) and I don't really know the whole story ~
My guess is the whole audition and win was set up with the show’s producers by her label, Decca Records, so they would’ve known Mrs. Hensley was Patsy’s mother. Patsy was declared the winner, but another contestant, Joe Artes actually got the loudest applause. The fact the producers insisted she wear a cocktail dress instead of the cowgirl outfit her mom had made and that she sing her second choice Midnight, pretty much says the fix was in. It takes nothing away from Patsy and she certainly wasn’t in on it.
The winner was all up to Godfrey. If he announced her the winner… then she was. Nobody at CBS ever dared to question him else be fired. The applause meter be damned.
@@MikeJones-do1xv Okay, so maybe what the producers did, knowing him they figured if they put her in a cocktail dress and had her sing Midnight, Godfrey was likely to choose her.
so many stories...just glad the world got to hear the voice of an angel. RIP Miss Patsy Cline
Patsy deserves all the accolades and awards in this and any world.
The stories about how Patsy got her start in music always makes me smile, I love Patsy Cline, every note she sang. She had a voice sent from heaven.
Deborah Wilson 😊😊SO TRUE!!!!
you mean how she cheated her way into show business?
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic You have my vote for a**hole of the year. Good job!

Pulled one over on 'Ol Arthur Godfrey.

Agreed-I just visited the home in Winchester yesterday. The docent was quite knowledgeable about the appearance but of course biased towards Patsy.

My guess that Arthur Godfrey knew that was her mother but didn't care because he had heard that voice in rehearsal.
SO She fibbed who hasn`t
She was a pretty girl
