    Very few plugins have made me feel like “wow this changes everything”. Mostly thanks to TimP’s work Nebula is one of those plugins for me. There were sounds I just could never seem to get that fell right into place once I started exploring that platform. I never thought I’d be one of the people saying “yeah there’s usability quirks and some hoops to jump through but the sound quality is worth it”. But here I am, Nebula and most of Tim’s stuff has to be one of the best investments I’ve made in audio software

    I felt like the phase was a bit nicer on the hardware (It's hard to describe, but on the first few hits of the snare roll the tim P had some subtle stuff happening, and I felt the same on bass) and on the more percussive/low end elements, I felt like the DBX had more 3D depth.
    I liked the Tim P more on vocals though, for some reason felt 3d-er. :)

  • @AftertuneMusic
    @AftertuneMusic 3 года назад +2

    Btw hardware feels more on low end but Tim work it's ridiculously good compare the fact that hardware have his own DSP circuit which means that's it's dedicated to do THAT work instead of CPU that handles ton of background task at the same time, i think the limit of CPU in audio processing (the fact that audio it's not a multithread processing) it's one of the biggest architecture issue ever for ITB mixing and mastering... Unfortunately audio passing though gears will have more character in general but the tone/saturation/angle phase can be replicated (with a lot of patience and work) still can't feel the with that hardware can add to sounds (btw timP it's a real pro in the nebula game, i wish more.stuff from him 🥺)

    Thank you for this! I worked live audio for years where the 160A (and X) lived on almost all live rigs, before everything went digital - and plenty of them still thrive out there. Is it the best compressor ever? Who cares? It was a sound and I know it better than any other piece of outboard gear. So glad someone made a plugin version and I will get it straight away. People idolise the old VU 160 and ignore these punchier, nastier 160s.
    The tests:
    On kick - I could not hear much difference but thought the TIMP let more LF through
    Snare - The DBX sounded better on the snare, by a hair. That THWACK, I look forward to pushing the TIMP harder
    Bass - The DBX sounded better but it's not the best ever bass guitar comp anyhow
    Vocal - TIMP won for me. The DBX sounded more choked, the TIMP more transparent

      I noticed the same. It took me a while to get really close to the hardware and it was first trying to reign in that extra bit of sweetness. Can't remember how I done it, was either the harmonics or the lookahead. Think it was the lookahead that tonally got me a bit closer. I couldn't hear any difference whatsoever. Surprise. But it got me thinking. Wouldn't it be interesting with a video where you or any other talented person mixed a song on proper equipment and then mixes the same song on the worst, cheapest pair of headphones. Like the ones that come with your phone. And then a regular person gets to listen to the song in their regular headphones preferably after MP3 compression as well and see if they can hear the difference? Could be a controversial video... whaddayathink?

    Your Mix....will 90% Gauge how Realistically you can make that song "Sound Ready Ready" and Fully Mastered

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  3 года назад +2

      Tbh its probably me. Theres a fine line with the harmonics where if it's set a certain way you have a little bit more control in the high end. I overlistened big time on this and because I could tweak the top end detail with the harmonics and lookahead it was genuinely driving me round the bend 😅 I was listening tonally and to the compression at the same time and I think I tweaked myself to the point of ear fatigue. I can't ever leave things alone haha

      @@PaulThird I feel that. I'm guilty myself. That's why I watch other people (knowledgeable) do it so I can be fairly quick in my judgement. There was a sale for Slate's Distressor emulation a few weeks back. I was wondering if it's as good as the real thing. It wasn't - eats high end as well. Most of amp emulations (kemper and neural captures included) when compared to the real things. I wonder why detailed and not fatiguing high end is so difficult to get with plugins (my experience). Surely, it's not just aliasing because I always oversample.

    • @PaulThird

      Yeah slates distressor doesn't have it when I compared it. It's good but not a distressor. However softubes Mike-e now were talking! I'm still Gutted I can't afford it haha
      Tbh it could be lots of factors. It's probably the bandwidth. Digital high end can go pretty high. It needs to be tamed more than anything. Could be various factors. Impedance is a big factor in hardware but dunno if it's only lows it affects.. Or highs as well in terms of roll offs
      It can be aliasing in plugins but if gain staged and oversampled you should be alright. Its a fine balance as its either too bright or too dull / washy haha
