I’m alive thanks to these rumble strips. I was driving near midnight on a highway in Minnesota and fell asleep at the wheel. Those rumble strips did their job wonderfully and 20+ years later I can tell about it.

its a really terrible idea because it will give a false sense of security to pedestrians thinking they can cross anywhere also drivers learn routes they take commonly, if people try to cross where there isnt a crossing its morelikely the driver wont be paying as much attention as they would if they knew a crossing was approaching. e.g. choosing the long stretch of road with no crossing as a good time to change the radio etc
it not false sense of security if you have common sense to begin with. You are aware this video was just a demo when it came to cross walking? i'm sure it be applied to side walks drivers know where to stop as written in the driver handbook.

pretty sure its not actually cheaper... hence why they arent used. I looked at doing something like that for a driveway, the plastic mesh cost a bucketload, then you STILL need the fill anyway... only way its cheaper is if it ACTUALLY lasted a crapload LONGER than the 'usual'
It's also giving construction an excuse to continue to mass cut and clear natural areas in order to lay more road for fucktards who like to burn fossil fuel. So not really impressive in the ways your thinking.
I'd imagine the cost savings only come in places where normal roads either don't work or don't last. Otherwise, you're adding in the cost of making large amounts of polymer webbing in place of nothing. (they'd just put down everything else minus the web)

+Runway runner ppl have a stressful requirement for the long drives and to keep deadlines, it happens. and the when you have those straight roads that stretch on forever with no twists of turns it is actually remarkably easy to just kind of zone out and start veering off.
w/e the reason, a break every 2 hours is the recommendation, but even then other forms of fatigue can still take their toll

The rumble strips have been here forever in Texas, except they don't have the grooves but it still makes a loud sound.

MattMzansi I watched some type of segment on them in like 7-8th grade and in the long run they are way cheaper then normal roads and help because they can make them solar and can hold the weight of two semis or something

Will it result in a simple pothole like what happens on asphalt roads? Or does it start as a small pothole & quickly grow larger with every vehicle that drives over or near it until it's as big as a sinkhole?
How much are repairs & how long do they take in comparison ot regular Asphalt?
I think it would be cheaper & safer to have a fence along the edge of the footpath, with crossings at regular intervals!

Was surprised to see rumble strips and tactile pavement since both have been common in Canada for quite some time, rumble strips definitely help and you can here when cars go over them from a distance. Cool stuff :)

The first is the only one who is Economic. The other ones are just to test things and are much to expensive and hightech. Keep doing things like nature. smart, simple, and low energie input.
The 3d printed bridge, the reuse of asphalt, non Newton Ian fluid bump, vibrator road are also economic in long term
vibrator road is not economic in long term. More accidents, means less people, means less vehicles on road, means road will last longer, means long term it is more expensive (in case anybody is wondering, this is sarcasm). On a serious note, 3D printed bridge is probably more economic, reuse of asphalt is a I believe present for quite some time, probably should not be in this video, but yeah, it is way more economic, vibrator road is not about economics, but more about saving lives, and for a really low price. Non-newtonian fluid bump, is in my opinion a nono economically. It will last less, it would not be easily fixed, and, if somebody is pissed at bumps, he just needs a good knife to "kill" the bump. Otherwise, its a great idea.
The 3D printed bridge seems unworkable to me. Extremely versatile, yes, at least once developed beyond this primitive approach. But also an extremely inefficient use of energy and resources ... I don't think it'll ever become revenue-positive or practical enough for real standalone deployments. I can imagine drone-like machines spidering or flying around bridge-like structures for (re)construction purposes, but only where raw human labour is not a cheaper approach.

Here in *_New Zealand_* the rumble strip concept has been in use for at least a decade. It's a horrible noise if you drift to the shoulder (i.e. left side) and although I've never experienced it, I presume that some wider roads have the middle of the state highways similarly covered. We have also had the _tactile pavement_ in some cities for some time as well. A really great idea, it has contributed to more visually impaired people having some choice in their independence that previously meant, they relied on someone to provide an escort should they want to go for a walk for whatever reason.

As far as "crossing" safety, I always thought (for years) that holographic technology would be easier to implement than to have the road emit the light everywhere because of practicality and cost; then motion technology could sense at certain areas a person crossing a designated area and activate a holographic walkway and even light barrier with the person still visible; then go off when the person was safely across the road. Holographics would work better in rain and on snow covered roads as well because the barrier could be (3) dimensional (like a see thru light curtain) instead of only (2) dimensional.

We have them, but not dug in like that, in the UK the road marking lines are painted in a way that makes the same rumble :) I would say using raised paint is probably better in the long run, as digging into the road to make them could allow water to seap into the grooves
Reece Asbury Not quite the same, the US ones make a louder sound and vibrate stronger, and as far as I noticed we only have these raised paint ones in areas where you have to slow down, or before a crosswalk.
In Sweden, they are used almost everywhere on major roads..
The vibrating lines have been in Australia for decades. My friend worked for road side assistance(mobile mechanic) and 80% of his call outs were tourists that would run over them and freak out thinking that the car was about to fall apart..

Them rumble strips really do work. Loud as hell. But they come in real handy in the winter when roads are so snow packed you can’t see the lines. But you can tell where the center is with these.

I see the bumps everyday in NYC. It has an added bonus. It prevents carts from rolling on the slight slope but I would still hold onto it.
Liquid speed bumps would cost alot, and if they where to burst or pop or leak for any reason at any given time it would take up time and money to replace just a speed bump. Overall its a good concept but i highly doubt people would install them.

Who cares what fluid these contain, even water would be "softer" than concrete for low-speed vehicles (and water is pretty cheap to install, maintain, or clean up, lol).
But everyone hates speedbumps. And low-tech concrete speedbumps are much more resistant to spiteful/casual/bored vandalism.
So these things are a brilliant idea, in theory. But I think they'll only be useful in niche applications, in practice.
Well these can't contain water, cause water doesn't work that way with this speed bump, the speed bump using a fluid that gets hard if its hit really fast. This would be a mess and a pain to clean up and replace.
I don't think so. It grants jobs from government so money circulates and helps some lower income folks that's willing, and instead of repairing the broken parts they can make it so it's replaceable instead which makes fixing it so much easier cheaper and they can use recycled materials so those stuff doesn't stay forever in some dump site.

Smart Crossing looks too electrically intensive to be economically viable. Even with cheap lighting.
It's not economically viable because LED's/glass/plastic/whatever are not viable road surfaces and are going to break down or become too slippery to be safe. It's the same reason "solar roadways" can't even build a sidewalk with embedded LEDs that doesn't break after 3 months.
and in turn these drones can put a lot of people out of work. nice very nice.

draggy76 I don't know about your driving experiences, but I've found many speed bumps to be jarring even at low speed. This is a good idea in theory, and there may be practical ways to prevent vandalism such as steel or kevlar mesh-encapsulated fluid reservoirs or self-healing fluid that hardens when exposed to oxygen.

I've used ad blocker for a long while now... I didn't mind it when they were 10 to 15 seconds long, could be skipped and only every 3 videos or so, but when it became an ad for every video and some where several minutes long, with no ability to skip I had enough and use ad blocker ad on for my browser now.
I mean I don't mind providing support for content creators, but there has to be some balance. I come to You Tube for content, not ads.

in the states we just use... geo-grid which is cheaper and does the same thing and is easier to lay out. rumble strips have been around for a while all the way back to the 1960s on interstates, but because of physical barriers not on the center line. I seen guys do it with an iron rake.
in the states we already recycle asphalt cheaply, as filler or as rock base for other structures, which is cheaper and less complicated.

So the led road concept is pretty much allowing ppl to jump the road like it's nobody's Bussiness and blame the driver when they hit them ? Ya ok. It literally beats the entire logic of having roads. Driving a car is more complicated than walking. The purpose of the road is to drive on it and pedestrians should follow the rules . Why should pedestrians be allowed to do whatever they want and the drivers to start paying 100 times more attention ?
