  • On April 21, 1927, a young New Zealander named Rewi Alley first stepped foot on China's mainland, right here in Shanghai at Dock 16. He didn't know it then, but he would go on to make a huge impact in China, and would remain here until his death 60 years later. Let me tell you his story, from Shanghai to Shandan...

This is a great short documentary Andy, as a New Zealander I also hope more of us can learn from Rewi Alley and promote peace and understanding between China, New Zealand and the World. I saw you on Seven Sharp when you returned to China, I hope you can appear on our local news more often Andy to help promote the truth, as like you said now is perhaps more important than ever.

I suspect because of his support of the communist party. He devoted his life to teaching and educating the youth of China. Regardless of ideology, he was truly a giant among men. It’s a worthy cause for humanity and peace when there’s so much malicious lies launched against China. But be ready for attacks against yourself as other you-tubers in China experienced.

An exceptionally well presented autobiography of someone I'd never heard of before. I just searched Amazon for books about him but all unavailable, except for one by Anne-Marie Brady - the description of which is that she lays bare myths about the man. I'll eventually get around to reading it & it'll be interesting to explore the man from both sides.
Setting this aside (all heroes have faults & are imperfect), I'm very impressed by what he had achieved in an era so far removed from the present day.
In all, you & your team have packed quite a lot in, in a 25 minute documentary. Well done.

Thanks so much for the kinds words of support, Spider Mann! It's really appreciated. Did you manage to find A Communist in the Family by Elspeth Sandys? It's a really good and recent book written by Rewi's cousin, who traveled to China to trace his footsteps.

    • @spidermann1256

@@ReportsOnChina The 2 books on Amazon were his own autobio & one by Willis Airey, neither available for sale. The only one available was the aforementioned by A-M B. I'll try to search Elspeth later when I've got some free time.
Sadly I have more books piled up waiting to be read than I have spare time! Anyhow, I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.
There's also a youtube Gung Ho courtesy Archives NZ which I also hope to watch.
      Best of luck going fwd.
