Can You Combine Resin with HDPE?

  • This is actually a project we started about six months ago, but we've only recently managed to get around to finishing it. So better light than never (couldn't resist) - here is our idea for a recycled plastic lamp.
As you may have heard us mention in previous videos, HDPE is a pretty slippery surface so nothing sticks to it. So, in this video we wanted to see if there was a way we could get around that problem so that we could combine recycled plastic and resin. Safe to say it can be done with the help of a trusty slot-cutting router bit. Enjoy!

Nice job! Beautiful light! I love the way you "weld" the pieces together with a heat gun and the heat press! What are your thoughts on potentially welding together something made to hold a person's weight? Like a chair... I'm thinking you would still need screws or bolts.. Oh! You know what would be awesome? If you built a life size R2-D2 out of hdpe and resin! I know... That's would be a big project..

If you have difficulties to find gold HDPE, I have a suggestion for you.
Ask to metalworking factories in your area, maybe the ones who does series.
If they use GUHRING Gold Ring taps, you found a good source of gold HDPE and/or gold PP (for small size taps they use PP flip top boxes).
I work in a factory that use those taps, and I'm collecting a lot of them, since I'm starting my plastic recycling project.
Unfortunately (for this question...😉) I'm in Italy, and I can't give you some.

  • @khindall8044

I am confused. I thought one of the maxims of making recycled projects was to use as few materials as possible, so that the item was easily recyclable in the future. This project doesn't look so to me. It's entirely possible that I misunderstood, though (I do, a lot!). I rather hope I did, actually. I have ideas for things, but very few of them meet that criterion. Thanks!

That's a cool way to combine these materials. Did you notice any wiggle in the resin parts, or are they fit so tightly that you could not even tell them not bonding to the plastic? Also, I wonder whether it would be possible to push heated gears into the HDPE and use them as resin anchors? Thanks for sharing!
