For me, Lamy Safaris are indispensable for workhorse writing. I find them light in weight and comfortable to hold. The ink flows smoothly. The colors are attractive. This is the pen that I always keep filled and regularly reach for. I prefer them to all my other pens. I have received so many years or good writing in return for a single $30 purchase.

I just dipped my toes into fountain pens and purchased 3 of Lamys in 3 different nib sizes. One reason for that decision was the fact that they are all interchangeable. It was an obvious idea that came to me even before I found out that Lamy has started doing it themselves. Changing out the clips and different colored ring in middle make it great to change things up. It really helps nudge people to collect them all and get creative with the different customizations.

I pity this guy as millions are using "Lamy Safari" and why want to reinvent the Lamay Safari when its already been in the market for a long time. i would dare to say many would agree to me that Lamy is the fountain pen that everybody should have. We dont really care about what you say and moreover you're probabably a loser.

When I got my first LAMY Safari (I named the dang thing "LAMEY"), I so bloody disliked it for several reasons...
But, day after day, I realised how HAPPY my hand was, while holding LAMY after any other fountain pen!
Today, I am an Converted Believer
It is absolutely amazing and hard-to-beat EDC fountain pen: so light (TOO light, if you don't post it!), ergonomic, balanced, durable, compact, easy-to-swap-nibs, practical, nice writer...

I like the Safari as my everyday carry pen or the pen that I use to introduce my students or other people into the world of fountain pens. It handles abuse well and I don't really mind if it gets a lot of dents and dings on it. I like drawing/sketching with the Lamy nib more than the nib in a TWSBI or I would use the ECO as my EDC.

I do respect Lamy’s function over form approach and since I have ‘a few’ Safaris/Al-Stars/Studios I decided to invest in a 14kt extra fine nib that I can use on whichever is my current favourite. I’ve got it on a humble blue Safari at the moment. Those gold nibs are a game changer. I’m considering a fine or medium as well 😁

Love the jazz music playing. I agree, if we all loved the same type of pen, what would be the fun
in that? I am an eclectic collector. The only pen I do not enjoy writing with is a really slim fountain
pen, even though my hands are small. I love writing with the big Jinhao 159, the cigar shape X750,
Bexley pens, Esterbrooks, Metropolitans, Lamy Safari/Al-Star, JInhao 100s, Noodler's, Platinum 3776,
Pilot Kakuno, Prera & Lucina, Conklin Duragraph, Monteverde Prima, my ebonite and acrylic pens from

As a decades long fountain pen user, over here in Belgium, back in the day, they were the mandatory writing tool until you were 12, i love the Safary. I have about 10 of them now, all with converters and in their price bracket, they are my overall favorite.
Recently I bought myselve a Lamy Dialog cc, gold nib medium and of course, I like this one more, but it is about 280€ more expensive and defenitly not one that I take everywere to scrible down notes with. That, is for my Safari.
You need to love the bigger pen, for she is rather large, and is also of wide girth, so it's a big pen in the price range. Maybe you are better served with a pen with a more slender body? To each their own, otherwise, why are there so many great fountain pens?
Good journey on finding your perfect pen, or at least one that realy souts your needs.

I own several Lamys-Safaris, Vistas, a Nexx, and Studios, and soon, I hope, a 2000. I have had no problems with them. I love ‘em! Yes, if I was starting my fountain pen journey again I’d buy Safaris again, maybe. I have grown to appreciate the quality of more expensive pens, so in reality I’d probably not buy an entry level pen if I were starting over, and know what I know now, but the Lamy Safari is an excellent "starter" pen. I bought a Safari last year and I actually quite enjoy mine. I'm not sure if the quality of mine is different than others, but mine suits me and my handwriting just fine. I write with a tripod grip anyways, so the grip isn't a huge detriment to me (in fact my first fountain pen had a forced grip of sorts). It's certainly not a Mont Blanc by any means, I know. But it's a fun pen to toss around.

This was my first pen as an adult. At the time I bought it because it comes with a leftie nib, but the triangular section isn't a good fit for my grip. I'm not a standard tripod grip person at all whatsoever but I've been so curious about this pen that I'm strongly considering it since it seems like a good beater pen I can carry around with me that I could potentially love. Plus I like that you can swap out the nibs so I can change sizes or if I drop it and the nib is ruined I can buy another. I like the idea of how easy-to-use it is that I want one. I think I'll get one despite my unconventional grip that might not be so happy with me when writing with this pen. The Pilot Kakuno has a similar but less molded grip on the pen and that one doesn't bother me so I have high hopes for this one.

I have a couple of Safari pens in my collection, and a couple of Studios. I prefer the size of the Studios, but the Safaris are where I test unknown quality inks and oddball colours. They are pens I don’t care about (compared to my Graf’s and Conway’s). There’s nothing wrong with them. As a steel nib they stack up with most of the sub $100 pens out there. They are lighter than the brass barrels I prefer and if they bounce, I’m not out a lot. They are throw aways but they work. For those who like pens and want to experiment with a fountain pen they are a good entry point.

  • @sparklefulpaladin

I have a couple of Safaris (EF and M nibs) and an Al-Star (B nib). While I know they can be polarizing and I've come across a lot of people who don't like them (mostly people who don't use a tripod grip), I really enjoy mine. They work well and don't fail to get the job done. They don't look particularly aesthetic (though I've managed to get pens in some of the colors I really enjoy and my purple M nibbed Safari is always inked up with purple ink), but they are functional and reliable. They do lack a bit of the personality that some of the other pens have (I'm a flex nib junkie and those are... quite a thing!), so that is one thing that I'm not too fond of with the Safari/Al-Star.
One downside of the Safari for me is that it's so light and I actually prefer the slightly heavier Al-Star that I received as a gift from a friend awhile back. If I was able to go back to the start of my fountain pen journey and purchase a new pen for the first time, I'd probably have picked an Al-Star rather than the Monteverde Ritma, which was my first real fountain pen.
My favorite thing about them (other than their durability) is their swappable nibs. I may eventually get a 1.1 to replace the EF nib on my Aquamarine Safari.
By the way, I love your penmanship! And thank you for showing a solid review that gives both many pros and cons of the Safari!

No, definitively I wouldn't buy it again. It was my second modern fountain pen after a Pilot Metropolitan, and in the beginning I've quite liked it: the triangular shaped grip section, the lightweightness, the minimalist design, and the nib (a black nib with a charcoal black model), but I haven't used more more than a dozen of times. I'd get it in F and I really hate the guts out of that nib: it dries out , skipped and get me out of my nerves. Later on, I bought a medium and stub nibs and the writing improved, but by that time, my interest for the pen had already dissappear. It's Ironic because after this experience, I've bought the Lamy 2000, and I was hesitant but then, the experience was the complete opposite of the Lamy safari. The Lamy 2000 is one of my Top 5 modern pens I never would part with. Funny, right?

I was given a Lamy back in the 1980s - looks like a Safari though I don't think it was called that. Cap started falling off after a few years and I have a relatively mild love-hate relationship with how it writes. A few months ago I got one on special from Goulet because it had a left-handed nib. Whether because of this particular nib or the general 'Safari'ness of it I enjoy this one quite a bit more.

I bought a Safari years ago when the fountain pen bug first bit, but it didn't impress. I stuck it away in a desk drawer. Recently, the bug bit again, and this time I bought a Monteverde Ritma, a Faber-Castell Loom, several Pilot Plumix, and a couple Pilot Metropolitans. Then I found my Safari in the desk and decided to try it again! The EF nib seemed to be split or damaged, even though it was stored with the cap on. So I ordered 2 new stub nibs from my favorite pen shop (Anderson Pens in Appleton, WI) and will give it a try again! I'm very puzzled at what could have happened to the nib. I love the flair a stub nib gives to writing. Your handwriting is superb! I also like your relaxing voice. I don't know why but Sailor's plastic body feels cool on my hand, but the Safari, oof, even my non-writing other hand gets warm, furthermore my grip sits exactly on all the wrong sides. I bought it with a stub nib since I don't have one and the limited edition color makes me finally have a purple pen in my collection, maybe I'll just put in waterproof ink and use it to write address on mail. feedback is nice though, I sort of expected the glassy smooth that is alike to Jinhao/Pilot steel nib, but it's the otherwise; heavier than sailor.

Hello, nice video. I have an all black Safari 2018 M. At the beginning it was kind of scratchy. So I took the risk of...polishing the nib to my personal point of use. With lots of patience and used sandpaper 2000, polishing cream, toothpaste, and polishing liquid Brasso, I already have the smoothness I was looking for. I am starting in the FP World. Tsss I also polished my Pilot Metropolitan. Just with toothpaste on paperboard, and that's it. The two of them are very smooth on paper. I do not like scratchy sounds. Thks for your Lamy Safari review!

I have a Safari, AL Star and Vista. I never use them now. For the price there are countless other options. Their nib sizes are not consistent, I have two F nibs which write completely different (one writes as an EF, the other draws a wider line than an M nib I have). No problem with the design at all, but a complete clean up is a real pain in the ass, removing the nib is trivial, but removing the feed from the section if not impossible is really complicated. The ink dries really quick on the feed and nib if left unused for a long time. For the price give me a TWSBI Eco or Diplomat Magnum all day.

I bought that exact pen and I was planning on using it as my main pen for journaling in my mole skin I found that the medium nib was too aggressive on the paper and overall the pen was too light and inconsistent on its ink delivery for my liking. The good news is I bought it for $18 plus the additional eight dollars for the ink pump so I’m not that disappointed. For me it’s overrated.

I stuck with my safaris for a while, and when I "damaged" one (too dried out and didn't know how to clean it properly) I got another one - and this was before RUclips was a thing and I got my first pen overseas, so there was really no one I could ask maybe except the FPN.
But having experienced a lot of other pens of wide price range now, I would tell anyone starting on their FP journey they can give the Safaris a miss. I feel like it was more chore than anything else if they are not going to write with it on a daily basis, and what the safaris could offer, other brands could and at a lower price point sometimes.

Lamy Safaris are fun. I've bought a lot of them. However, I've found inconsistencies in the nibs. I've had mostly F and M nibs. Some write great. Some are even scratchy. And the only B nib I've ever bought had baby's bottom. The retailer I've got it from had it quickly exchanged, but the replacement nib still isn't great. I've changed it to a stub nib and never wrote with the B nib again. I gave a few to my daughter and nieces and they have a great time with them. It's an ok fountain pen.

More than the aesthetics, the triangular grip section will define whether someone will love or hate this pen.
Personally, I don't think Lamy make a better pen up until the Lamy 2000... the Safari is more durable than it's twin sibling the AL-star and a far better value proposition than the Studio, all of which are functionally identical in regards to nib and feed.

I have had Lamy fountain pens, in particular the Safari and the 2000. I am not a fan of the triangular grip. As you mentioned, it forces one to use a grip that may or may not be to your liking.
As for the 2000, I found the nib to be too wet for me, being left-handed.
I have focused on Italian, Japanese and some of the Chinese brands. The Chinese pens have shown a remarkable improvement in style, construction and quality. Japanese pens Chavez always been consistent and yes, they ultimately become very personal to the user but pens with gold nibs have done so for decades. Italian pens are overall beautiful, almost functional art. Nibs can vary, depending on the manufacturer of the nib. It is always an adventure to find a pen that fits the person.
Lamy does not do it for me.

  • @Hexsyn

Could be wrong on all these points, but I thought the safari originally came out with just two colors, and they weren't just green and red, specifically terracotta red and savanna green. Also, just as a point of very nit-picking order, they don't cone with a converter, which is part of why I also don't care for them at the price point.

Some people say the grip doesn’t work for them, but it’s designed to be the intro writing tool for kids in Germany where fountain pens are used in school, meaning that it’s designed to teach you how to hold a pen properly. Some Americans might complain that there is no “proper way” and this is super German, but to be very honest, there is a proper way and that is the proper way ergonomically as well. Why use 4 fingers when you can use 3

    • @sajjadhusain4146

I just find the triangular grip extremely ugly and annoying. I don’t even think it’s especially necessary in teaching children or anybody else to learn to grip a pen and write with it properly. I learned to write cursive with a fountain pen as a kid - with Sheaffer pens, the No Nonsense pen probably being my first. I use three fingers and grip the section a little further back than most people I’ve seen. Anyway, it all comes down to perceptions and preferences, I know.

I feel like quite the Lamy Fanboy. Haha. But yeah, even though I'm not actually a big fan of the Safari design, nor the triangular section, I still like to use mine.
I started out my fountain pen journey with a Pilot MR, then I got a Lamy Joy with a 1,5 mm. To start with I tended to glide down to the front of the grip and get my index finger clenched a bit despite having a quite neutral tripod grip. Then I wanted a demonstrator pen and bought a Lamy Vista. That came with a very bad F nib. After that I wanted a round pen to see if I would grip that better, so I bought a Lamy Logo in the brushed steel finish that had a very smooth M nib. I realized then that my Vista F nib really was bad and ordered a replacement F nib and after that my Vista is one of my favourite pens.
Since then I've picked up a Lamy 2000 and a Lamy Aion in the Red special edition finish which is sooo nice looking...
One can say I belong to the category of people that like modern pens with straight edges rather than the old school cigar shape.
Thanks for a very nice and calm way of discussing this topic of taste. :D

I bought my first fountain pen, two lamy safari from a well known and reputable shop in Italy at Black Friday for 18€ each and still I'm not sure if they was genuine or not, so i returned them.
I got the strawberry and mango and they had differences in printing of protection ring and on "Germany" at the bottom side of the pen, differences in the simple box that they came, in the polishes of the plastics, in the cartridge and ofcourse in the nib.
Unfortunately where i live i couldn't find any lamy to see it before i order them.
Even if they were genuine the quality of the plastic wasn't what i expected so i returned them, together with the converter that i have ordered.
But i don't think they were genuines, because if it was genuine and lamy charges 20-24 € for these pens, then they are out of their mind.
So maybe you also got fakes, even from a well trusted shop, or lamy safari just isn't worth it.
If i ever manage to buy a lamy safari directly from Germany that i will be sure that it's genuine, i may change my mind, but till then i believe there are much better options out there.

One of the Lamys works just fine, but the other has big problems with ink flow. I have cleaned it thoroughly - no luck! I even switched nibs with the other Lamy, and the other one continued to work fine, while the problem continues with the pen in question. I can only conclude that the pen itself is defective. It's ink stops flowing after a little while, and if I shake it downward 30 to 60 times it will work again, but the ink flow is increased, which makes for a thicker darker line - not so good for drawing.

The Vista will always be the most expensive pen I'll ever own, and I'll most likely get more of them with different nibs.
