I'm 73 years old. I'm the keeper of family items that are 120 years old and older. I'm aware that none of our three children will want to continue to keep these items (all small and fit on a china cabinet shelf). My solution has been to photograph each item and write a narrative of who it belonged to and their relationship to the rest of the family. I'm in that process now and when done I'll sent the file to a self-publishing book company and order one for each of our children and grandchildren. I have a photograph of the fife an ancestor carried during the American Revolutionary War. I've learned that I don't need the actual item to appreciate the importance and family connection.

When my Grandma was passing away and we (myself and my parents) were staying with her older sister Louise who would fix dinner for us. She would use the dishes she used every single day. My father said to her that they were antiques and should be put up so they wouldn't get broke. Her answer made me rethink about things in my house that we now use every day. My great Aunt Louise said: "I've used these dishes every day of my life. Why would I want to put them up on the shelf where they will just collect dust and not be worth anything. If I put them up on the shelf I might as well put myself up on the shelf and if I did that we (her and the dishes) would be no good to anybody."

We’ve been using the same set of bowls every day that my grandparents used every day. They are now considered expensive collectibles, but I preferred to use them so my family has that memory attachment as well. Each time a grown child leaves home, I give them one of the bowls. They have loved having something they used in their childhood that was also used by their great grandparents

I agree 100% on the ‘use it or lose it’. I kept a china set my dad gave me at graduation in storage. Never used it, so when I needed new dinnerware I pulled it out and use it for every day use now. He has been gone for 27 years now and I think of him every time I use a dish. A much better use.

Both of my grandmothers had small glass dessert dishes. I was lucky enough to get them from both. I had them stored away and realized I should be using them. We use them every day now, and every time I pull one out of the cupboard I am reminded of them. I broke one a couple of weeks ago and my heart broke a little ( I am a super sentimental "saver"), but I resisted the urge to put them back in storage and just promised myself to be more careful. I love the "use it or lose it" philosophy. With baby steps, I am working towards a less cluttered life and your videos and the message you share are so inspirational. Thank you. ❤️

I love your advice to honor the memory of our loved ones by actually using their belongings. I used to feel the need to preserve them and store them safely away as well. So basically, storing away memories of them altogether. Let's not 'SAVE' the fancy things for 'SPECIAL OCCASIONS'! Today can be that day. Let's create memories NOW instead of just reminiscing!
Dawn, I have loved this series! You have introduced me to so many amazing new RUclips channels and I am so grateful to you. I also try to use things that are meaningful to decorate my bookshelves instead of buying random things from Homegoods. I have a baseball displayed from the last time my sons played catch in the backyard before my oldest moved out for college. I also collect a few rocks from vacations and put them in small glass containers with labels about the trip instead of buying souvenirs. We also use my grandmothers everyday dishes daily. Those little touches tell the story of your family.

My mother made quilts and they are large to store. When she passed this year we had cousins on my mom's side that did not get one of her quilts. My sister and I went thru those quilts and was able to pass along a quilt to each of our cousins. I was inspired by your idea to honor these items and how many of her quilts can I have on my bed? Knowing I was able to pass along one of her quilts to her nieces made us both happy and we are not storing them but they are being honored and used. I am learning so much about why we hang on to things and that they are of no value if we do not use them. Thanks for sharing.

Nice intro with the basement! So true about the lighting!
And the "use it or lose it" is so worth doing! I have 2 sets of china: one from my great aunt when she passed, and one from my husband's great uncle when he passed. I know it sounds excessive, but they are sentimental and beautiful, and I love pretty things. One set is displayed in a china cabinet from my mom's parents, the other is stored in a vintage buffet I found on Marketplace in the same style. They are in our formal dining room (doubling as the virtual school room), and I enjoy using them for holiday meals, and when guests stay with us. My mom told me her mom would always use her china for one special meal during a houseguest's stay, and I thought that was such a good idea, I've adopted it, myself. And I don't know why, but my two boys (10 and 6) have much nicer table manners when we use the china. Maybe they can see how special it is, or something.
I also have some white bowls that are the exact same as those ones you have, that look like feathers! So pretty. My grandma gave them to me. If you look closely, they are just white glass, not true milk glass. Milk glass has a kind of translucent quality, like the little dish you showed on your end table. Those feather bowls are totally opaque.

Thank you clutter free January was a fab idea💡 Decluttering has become a kind of hobby for me, so I thoroughly enjoyed it and found lots of new You Tubers to watch & inspire me. I didn't even realise how much paper clutter I had hidden away, even in the attic. 3 bags of shredding later I now have 1 small box of exactly what I need. 3 years of decluttering & my house still feels full to me but would probably be empty to others. It also gives me a feeling of control in a uncontrollable world, when were in lock down 2.0 here 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. Thank you

Then somehow I found you and the first playlist decluttering kitchens, I got rid of so much in my kitchen. All my small appliances are now stored in the cabinet, I have a free clear counters! I love the idea of "use it or lose it." My grandmother's sandbakkels tins were given to me for my birthday. The old me might have been tempted to keep them locked up in a dark box or closet, but I have already used them a couple times. I keep them on the kitchen shelf with my other equipment, so I can see and enjoy them every time I cook.

Hello Dawn! I came across your channel for the first time last fall. It has been so inspiring and helpful to me personally. I love the fact that you are so sensible, down to earth, confident in your thinking and have followed through with action, how you actually live your life❤️ Thank you so much!
Since discovering you I’ve decluttered 99% of my entire home and it feels great! I had shuffled many sentimental items into a couple of boxes todo at the end. It was the first time I had feelings of anxiousness before attacking those items. But once I started...no problem! Love the idea of using memory bins. Am going to pass it on to the mother of my beautiful grandkiddies.
My mom passed away two years ago and I had decluttered her belongings with her many times. While doing that she told me the stories behind many items that I would not have known had we not done that together (the lamp she bought for her mother with her very first pay check, the ceramic dog figurine my grandfather had given my grandmother when my mom was born). She made decisions for certain items to be gifted to specific family members. Then she set aside items she didn’t particularly want donated or thrown away and had her grandchildren come to choose what they would like to have. So when she passed that work had already been done and there weren’t so many decisions that had to be made. So.....that has been my inspiration also. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of “stuff” that was taking up space and my children did not want. A win win!
    Thank you once again!❤️

You are truly awesome, and your channel has helped me more than I can express. Your channel also introduced me to Cass and Dana before the course was available. Five days left...I am trying to budget it in. 🙂 Thank you, Dawn, for all you do to help others. Your tips and tricks are great!

Dawn ~ Your always great with your approach and allowing us all to stay true to our selfs.
I use my sentimental items too... I'v only kept what I love and use it. I also don't freak when it gets broken. 30+ years I've had an eclectic set of vintage secondhand dishes that always get complements.
Then with my 3 kids I started framing one of my favorite art projects and it's the art in my bedroom. Yes... a full wall ~ but a wall filled with love.

I've been using memory bins for years (I just have 2) and encouraging friends to have them. They should be clear, so you can see what is in them, unless there are items that fade. And, i recommend going through them once every of couple of years to enjoy the memories and look back on life. And, if there is something in there that needs to be let go, let it go.

This was a great video Dawn. You really spoke to me. "Archiving" items to keep nice and not enjoy - wow - this hit me! Thank you! And, YES! I have very much liked this series... I don't have many channels I watch - minimize my digital clutter - but I have found a new person - the Daily Connoisseur - that I love now and watch and I found her from the play list - thank you!

Hi. I have to say thank you. I found you thru frugal fit mom in December and I have to admit that I thought there is no way I can do this. Well I just started and didn't stop. I still have slot more to do but you have made my life so much easier and I even like my rental house now. It is so much easier to keep clean and tidy, so much easier to put clothes away , so much less clutter in the kitchen and bathroom. Now to tackle all the sentimental stuff. 😀 thank you so much. Really loving your videos

Your memory bin idea has been one of my favourite RUclips finds. I am a mom of 6 and having that limited space for each child is a game changer. I have a file folder box with a hanging folder for each year of their lives for paper stuff for each child and a memory tote like yours for their non paper things. It is so fun to pull that tote off the shelf on their birthdays and relive those memories!!

Keeping kids paperwork and art. If you ask your kids, chances are they won’t won’t to keep very much. I think as parents we sometimes want to hold onto every memory. If everything is precious, then nothing is precious.

    • @trinam2503
      @trinam2503 3 года назад

So true!!! And papers become musty over time. :(
One idea I came across years ago, and worked very well for me was: take a digital photo of the art work. Keep the digital and then when it becomes ratty or worn out toss the original. I keep 2 copies, 1 on a thumb drive and 1 on my computer. (I have had thumb drives and hard drives go bad on me and lost tons of photos and work so I keep a backup) it takes up so little space on a USB or on your computer, or if you're so inclined, no space at all on the Cloud.
I also did this with stuffed animals and toys from my childhood that I wanted to remember. (I am allergic to dust and mold so storing them for decades just wasnt an option for me).
I still have the memories, but not the inventory to manage.

Another way to ease the anxiety of letting go of an item you are keeping, not because you want it but you want the memory associated with it, is to snap a digital picture of it and add it to a thumb drive that you keep in the box. You can put one in each box and then pop it in the computer when you want to take a walk down memory lane. That also allows you to print a picture as well if you ever have the need to. I found this especially helpful when dealing with kids artwork and projects.

I completely agree with you - I have many things that were my mom's or my grandmother's I use on a daily basis. One example...we use my nana's good silver everyday. And everyday I smile when I open the silverware drawer. On another note, you often mention "managing inventory" - that has been life changing for my husband and me. We are so aware, now, of not wanting to add to the household inventory. Thank you!

I've had that same mind set about use it or lose it for many years. As I watch/listen to this I'm drinking water from a family heirloom that has the name (Clara K. Thanks for the company and the help.

I have a mismatched set of dishes, too. One thing that I think about when something gets broken is how I am experiencing grief and loss in that moment. I mourn the thing because it was special to me. To go through loss and mourning, even in a small way like that, is ultimately healing for our souls, I think.

Such a good point about "splitting up a set" (glasses, furniture, etc). When you said it, it sounded almost silly to be afraid of that but I never stopped to question the thought that somehow donated things have more value if they're all together.

I’ve enjoyed this series. Dishes were done while watching the kitchen week and it inspired me in the midst of the kitchen construction chaos. The other playlists I’ve used the same way.
The next playlist I’m dreaming of is your collaboration with Tom on organizing tools. As I said we are living in a construction zone. I have a pile of boxes filled with kitchen stuff in quarantine. Maybe when I finally get cupboards I will decide I don’t need them. But how to work around the chaos until we finally find a home for the tools when the kitchen cupboards are not cluttering up the garage.

The Holy Spirit must have helped you in your decision on whom to ask to join you. I have been truly blessed by "A Hoarder's Heart" and her journey and I believe you asking her to join was as if you were spurring her on. Yahweh bless you and your family. I so enjoy you and your hubby's videos together. You both exemplify such high moral character which I know only comes from having a relationship with the Savior. I can’t thank y’all enough for doing this course. It has given me encouragement and focus during the pandemic. I just feel better when I can find things. There are too many examples too list. My clothes closet door opens completely. I am putting my shoes back on the shelf versus the floor.
Before I worked on the bathroom I was about to add face wash to my shopping list. It turns out I had 4 bottles of face wash ! Now that things are labeled I hope I can avoid this. In my pantry I had to discard an embarrassing amount of expired food but I have consolidated frequently used items so I can better see what I have . There are too many benefits too list. Thank y’all for being a positive force for change !
