We are finishing Prehistory combo now and I thought we would just flow into ancient civilizations. We haven’t done anything with B&R or BYL before prehistory though. Is there any reason you would recommend we do Around the World before ancient civilizations? I figured we could do the world when we get to current times, but I know I’d probably want to go in depth with USA too. Just having a hard time trying to decide the order to teach in!
You definitely don’t have to do around the world before ancients. We have enjoyed it as a great introduction to homeschool for the kinder age but since you’re already doing prehistory it makes sense to keep going. I have heard of other families doing a modern country study when they cover that country in history which is a very neat idea.
My son is in 6th grade and we used the History Quest Early times during the fall semester. He read the whole book cover to cover aloud to me. And we enjoyed the activity book that came with it that had the maps and comprehension questions. I’m curious what your younger kids thought of it? It’s so thick and wordy. I know my younger self would have definitely been intimidated by it.
Our 8 year old really loves it. She does listen to much more advanced audiobooks though. We'll see how it strikes the second time around when our youngest is 6.
Would you consider making a video on how you do speech to text. My son loves making stories and it has been tough transcribing everything for him. Thanks!!
What would you say the earliest age to start level 1 would be? I have a 4.5 year old and I'm thinking about starting Level 0 pretty soon. I might expand it out to 2 weeks per country/region using selections from TL. I'm just worried about starting it too early and not being able to go into Level 1. Otherwise, we might do some TL Pre-K prior to starting BYL 0. We tried Blossom & Root but it wasn't a good fit for us (too many moving pieces on our end)
We’re looking to start level 0 with similar timing right before our daughter turns 5. We loved hitting prehistory after 0 as a great primer before jumping into ancients. I think level 1 needs 6 years old at minimum. We’ll be starting level 1 again when our younger daughter is 6.5. I hope that helps!
Are you guys doing 1+ hours of this 5 days a week…or is that amount because you are consolidating/condensing it into fewer days each week? How are you working it around parent partnership days?
Yes we are doing an 1-1.5 hr a day because we're only doing this 3 days a week typically. Matt estimates around 40 min a day if we were doing all 5 days. But we are adding in extra books too so YMMV. Our parent partnership is going to be only a couple of mornings per week, so I don't anticipate it interfering much with this, but we'll see in the fall! You can also batch activities and do 2-3 days worth at one time like the nature study for example. I think whatever time you have, this is a good curriculum to just pull as much as you have time for or want to do.
I absolutely love everything you all do! I also love the adult recommendations! That is something I have been looking for for so long!
