  • Filmmakers Gregor Möllers and Anne Lewald visit North Korea in 2013 for the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and again in 2017 for the Pyongyang Marathon as foreign tourists. Using secret recordings, they register their impressions of the notoriously closed country’s propaganda and their interactions with its people.

Shot during two trips to North Korea in 2013 and 2017, filmmakers Gregor Möllers and Anne Lewald provide a rare glimpse of change in the notoriously closed country. As foreign tourists, they are not allowed autonomy or spontaneity, and their itinerary is arranged for them in advance by guides who chaperone them everywhere. Despite these limitations the Berliners find a way to register their impressions of a city lacking authenticity, a country longing for reunification and a people shaped by Juche beliefs and socialist propaganda. In a society steeped in obfuscation and spectacle, where deception is necessary for perception and expression, the filmmakers themselves must play a double role, secretly recording without permission while also genuinely relating to their hosts. By blending travelogue and espionage, A POSTCARD FROM PYONGYANG captures what happens when you rely solely on what you see, not what you’re told, and reveals what Kim Jong-Un’s regime doesn’t want foreigners to see… reality.
    DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHIES
Gregor Möllers is a filmmaker, producer and editor. With his Berlin-based film production company EASYdoesit GmbH, he has been producing music videos and commercials for international musicians and brands for over six years.

As concept and art director, she has been responsible for the creative and conceptual development of film and video productions as well as international exhibitions for several years. She is responsible for the script and direction of A POSTCARD FROM PYONGYANG. A POSTCARD FROM PYONGYANG is their first documentary.

Again, why do you put the poor guides in a tough spot knowing they can't tell you anything politically incorrect? I've seen it from many Western documentaries and it's completely inconsiderate, knowing the nature of the regime.

    • @UTSA2012

Well said. It's so disappointing watching westerners try to trap or twist a word or two out of the guides, thinking it will embarrass the regime. Guys, those people are just the bottom of the food chain and will probably end up in jail themselves, or worse, for saying or even hinting at the wrong thing.

Amen, it's amazing to me the Democrat party talks about being the most unifying side of politics and since they took the presidency they have been the most divisive in years, calling people bigots and racist in every breath, saying that white supremacy is the root of all problems in America, no Big Government is the worst problem America has, people in the United States have common sense and we know what is right and what is wrong, and division amongst ourselves is not the best policy to have, atleast during the Trump Presidency daily things in our lives was affordable and not outrageous and a half buggy of groceries didn't cost 300 plus dollars for basic necessities. Hi German tourist. Did you visit South Korea as well. Some of your comments about alleged tension and words not said in your interaction with north koreans, is typical of a westerner who has never interacted with the Korean culture also in the south. You have presumptively misjudged what you thought was north korean regime associated behavior when it was just your own culture shock with all Koreans including South Koreans. I am very familiar with South Koreans and have lived along side them in daily life so i picked up immediately on your misinterpretation.

Ok now I’ve been fascinated with DPRk for over a decade and I’ve seen a lot. Seems like in the last 2-3 years, the amount of content trickling out of there is exponentially increased. This I believe will be and has been the catalyst to the downfall. I have seen loads of content and not much changes. You get an idea about what they believe And the generic things they regurgitate because , they gotta eat too.
But I would NEVER have guessed to see the woman in the green shirt admit the higher living standards in the south. That was incredible. Like even though she didn’t know they were filming, I just thought statements like that were trained even out of the thought process because of the consequences of being associated with such a comment. Unbelievably cool documentary.

He genuinely wants to peacefully coexist and it just as much a victim of the system as a South Korean in a lot of ways. This is not so, these performing children and teenagers are truly happy, a face that naturally and often smiles happily shows a beautiful smile. A face forced to smile for others cannot look like this. The hardest for Westerners like us is not to keep pretending that it is all a propaganda show but that it is a social way of life where discipline and selfless living can bring a happiness of an order that we are surprised to discover and that questions the selfish, individualist, rat race, capitalism of the west. We even get angry that we cannot easily show the shortcoming of a social republic because it would mean we have been brainwashed by western media for decades and that is upsetting to recognize for most westerners. They'd rather insult or mock NK than recognize they are victim of propaganda in the West. But just look at all the NK in this video not one of them is mean or looking down at you. Can you say as much from people from your country ? Not at all.

Things are not improving there. This type of thing is all very pre-arranged and staged by the government to try to convey to the outside world that things are normal there. Trust me when I say I’ve watched enough documentaries and videos on North Korea to know things aren’t well. Watch the Vice News pieces. Every outsider is assigned handlers to lie to them, keep them on a strict regimen, keep them from going out on their own, and to be taken to places that seem “normal”. I’ll never forget when these journalists were taken into a so called “computer class/lab” and it was like 40 people all sitting in front of computers with the google Home Screen and they were all sitting there pretending to be working on stuff and typing. And they weren’t doing jack shit. It was so BIZARRE. Look, when people are risking their lives running through razor wire and machine gun fire to get across to South Korea, you know it’s bad. Some people have tried to plow their way through in cars. One guy was shot a bunch of times but still made it. And we’re taking about trying to get OUT of their country. They aren’t stopped by South Korea. If they can make it across alive they are welcomed as asylum seekers. It reminds me of those videos you may have seen of people trying to flee East Germany into west and being gunned down for “escaping”.

@@JohnnyNiteTrain oh okay, i have seen all of those documentaries and assumed this was the African version of the Korean debacle. Do you know who funds their dictatorship? With North Korea obviously it’s the Chinese? Same with any old Soviet country like Belarus from Russia. This seems like a different situation though, right?

I am not supporter of N.Korea and I am against what has been happening there, in fact they are not a real communist country, but only a real dictatorship country and I am really tired of so many western reports about N.Korea.... I am sure there are many countries and leaders in the world which are even much worse than N.Korea. If the RUclips is really free why don't they show other bad countries and bad leaders?
I remember a couple of days ago I wrote a similar criticism but RUclips but they didn't print it.... If you are really a free organization, why don't you show anything about "Guantanamo Bay Prison" which is located in Cuba but US has rented it from Cuba and is run & belongs to the US? All prisoners in this prison are arrested randomly and kept without any trials and live there under the worst conditions.
This prison is located there because US wants to be away from any legal or foreign criticism or investigations against them... I wonder what is happened in justice & freedom in this country!? If US is criticizing other countries, at first we should correct ourselves and not to fool other people.... (If RUclips really loves its country & freedom, I hope they don’t delete this one).
