I love my 35 foot Ponderosa sundeck. The main advantage from my perspective is having a nice big aft State room with the walk around queen and also having the covered after deck. I spent a great deal of time in my zero gravity chair on my aft deck. This is my third boat in all of my boats have had covered aft decks with my present boat having three 200 W solar panels mounted on the hard cover. No need for a generator.
I live aboard my DeFever 44 sundeck trawler and find that I use my sundeck more than any other part of my boat. Upper helm is used 99% of the time underway.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle Which engine package does your DeFever have, Ford, Perkins or John Deere? Does the Westerbeke generator have an after market electric raw water pump? That saves a lot of headaches when you have to change the original design rubber impeller.

Hi Paul! I love your content and have learned a lot from you. I recall watching one of your many videos where you spoke of semi-displacement hulls so you can cruise a bit faster than a typical 8kts trawler. I thought you said this was your favorite style since I thought you said they cruise closer to 12-15kts. Can you please share an example or two I can research for this type of trawler? Thanks!
Thanks for the videos.... I have a question, I have a 1985 PT Trawler and I need to replace the RPM, Oil Pressure and temperature gauges.... cant seem to find them. Any suggestions? I would appreciate it.
From I've been reading on all the forums, FB groups, etc. getting insurance is a major problem on these older boats. Best advice is to talk to an agent about a boat BEFORE you make an offer. It may save you $$$. Otherwise, good job on the boat tour vid.
Just found your channel today, and got to say I've got to say I've already learned a lot from you. Who knew the different types of "trawlers"? Thanks for the info!
Nice video thanks. Can you comment about depreciation? Sounds like you’ve owned a lot of boats. Does the value level out at the age range you’re discussing - I.e. hold their value?
Just curious your opinion on a 1987 trojan international 36ft with twin detroits. Looks in descent shape owner does take it out now and then. Asking 10k due to illness.
In this series, can you talk about the advantages and disadvantages of fiberglass and aluminum hulls? It seems like a lot of the trawlers in the northwest are aluminum. That said, you do not see too many down south. Thanks for the video and "Peace Out".
I'm no expert but I only see disadvantages with both fiberglass and aluminum. Fiberglass has a lifespan and will want to delaminate in time . same with aluminum, simple chemistry has it that aluminum dissolves in seawater. Ships are made of steel. The strongest, longest lasting and easiest hull material to repair.
Could you address the distinctions of "trawler" versus "motor yacht" when it comes to the sundeck style you referred to despite their similar appearance?
Hi there. I’m new to your channel I have a Marine trader 50 footer three level boat. What category does it fall into. It dosent match those you mentioned. The only steps are to the upper deck or down a spiral staircase to the lower deck which is three bedrooms and a walk in engine room. Thanks for the response. Jean.
Y'all ever figure this out? It's weird, its a cross between what you call trunk and a sun deck. I'd call it a sundeck, but I think it has a walk around deck on that level. I can see why you call it Europa style, but that doesn't quit work either. @@NoRegretsLifestyle
me and my wife are going to be selling our house in the spring and moving on a trawler. i really want a single engine wooden grand banks in the 40 foot range. being 6'3 would there be any issue with that?
You probably do not want a wood hull. Grand Banks made a 36 Single Screw a bit tight but lots of people do live on them. I personally do not like the GB 42 to many issues with them. You might want to look at a 40’ Defever over a GB. Lots of good boats out there but a lot of junk also. Make an appointment come see me and I will take you aboard my 44’ Marine Trader and the 36 GB next to mine.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle I have a ton of wood working experience and zero fiberglass. Wooden boat would be a better fit for me and my tools. I'm more worried about my height being an issue lol. Where are you located at? I just started watching your channel and like your info on trawlers.

Nice video but if you want to inform newcomers to boating you might want to use the correct terminology. Bedrooms are staterooms, where you drive the boat is the helm or bridge and bathrooms are heads.
unusual to see a boat 'expert' not using correct marine terminology...'kitchen' ( galley ) 'bedroom' ( cabin ) 'driving station' ( wheel house or pilot house ) 'bathroom' ( head ) and so on. The boat with the Portuguese bridge wasn't a very practical blue water boat. The side deck walkways had no hand rails and nowhere to hold on along the cabin top. I wouldn't feel safe walking along the sides of that boat in any kind of rough weather. But other than that, an interesting look at typical aged trawlers in the States.
Some people love them and very popular boats, I personally had one on my list when I was looking and really like the 43'. But they are like the modern day CHB.
Me and my father tried to buy a trawler to save it from disrepair but the owners of it refused even after we offered 35,000 for it. Now the boat is overgrown with plants from under it and there are at least four dead rats on the deck and cobwebs all over it. I have never felt so bad for a boat ever.

Grand Banks were all teak and mahogany until 1974 they went to fiberglass but still kept the teak mahogany interiors
Thanks sir I was not sure of that date but I new it was somewhere around there.

There are absolutely no exceptions why this Grand Banks can’t do 12-15knots. Cruising at 7 or 8 knots is ok but today it’s just not enough.
Most of the newer Grand Banks Models do go much faster, its just fuel burn

Could you address the distinctions of "trawler" versus "motor yacht" when it comes to the sundeck style you referred to despite their similar appearance?
Speed would be the thing. A trawler only has a top speed of maybe 12 knots a motor yacht can reach speeds of 30 knots
