- GHS Endorser, Dave Pomeroy, sits down to chat about his favorite bass strings, the GHS Pressurewound Series.
Magnetically active " Alloy 52" slightly flattened in the winding process to provide a bright, great feeling string with less finger noise.
May I say that this guy is a beast? Holy crap that fretless song was awesome. Especially on the bluesy cadenza there at the end, you can really hear some great punch and "attitude" from the strings. I'm getting a fretless bass and I wanted a roundwound sound without messing my fingerboard up. These were recommended on TalkBass and being a strictly GHS man already, I will most definitely give them a shot, doubly so now because of this video. LOVE that sound; great job GHS, yet again!
GHS Pressurewounds are without a doubt the best strings I've ever had on my 35" scale 6-string bass. I took me 40+ years of playing bass before I tried a set, but I'm very, very glad I did.
GHS: These strings are perfect. Please don't change a thing!
Dave's such a great player and excellent spokesman. Thanks for the review, I was considering these string for my Stringray5 playing mostly traditional standards etc. Thanks to Dave I HAVE to try them now.
He's really feeling the music! I like this guy. You won yourself a customer.
Thank you, sir! We like Dave ourselves; very good people.
Glad to hear that you you are giving GHS Strings a shot! We hope you like them!
Just bought these (short scale) for my custom 29" bass. I am going to have so much fun! Thank you GHS!
Such beautiful playing. Thanks for a great overview.
These strings are great! I use them on my Fender P Bass and Guild B-301. I play hard rock and metal and they work well with or w/o a pick.
Just put these on my Aria fretless and found the sound I have been searching for, thank you GHS!!!
I appreciate your videos Dave. You helped me decide on a flatwound string about 2 years ago (GHS Precision Flats), which I put on my Precision bass. You have sold me on the GHS Pressure Wound too. I'll try them on both my Jazz bass and fretless Precision. Thanks!
Great video. The first tune was magnificent and the kind of tone I'm looking for (soft scales and chords). I have both a Fender P and J, but they sound almost identical with roundwounds. I want to put flats on one of them so each has its own distinct sound...
Thanks! Glad you like the videos, and glad they are helpful. Keep rockin' the pressure wounds!
Very entertaining AND insightful. Never checked out Dave's playing and singing before. I'm now a fan!
Pressurewounds will defiantly give you the best of both worlds, easy on the fingerboard but bright enough to cut through the mix.
Defiantly?
Man, your "fretless song" is GREAT !
Thanks - It's on my album "Tomorrow Never Knows" The
first instrumental is on a new album I am almost finished with. You can
check all of my stuff out at www.davepomeroy.com. All the best!
I'm sold. I just ordered a set for my fretless Spector Euro 4lx. Can't wait!
Slowly working my way up the brightness bar. I've tried the precision flats, pressure wounds, and boomers. So far I'm liking the pressure wounds the best. These are the best product demos on youtube.
You pressure wound and fretless bass is a GREAT. Combo..
Clearly, Dave Pomeroy seems to be super nice man with great melodies and he would be a great seller for these strings! Too bad that I can't get them easily in France... The first melodic part on the Precision Bass is absolutely beautiful. Great job to both GHS and Dave!
I'm viewing this after ordering a set for my SR506. I am glad I ordered 2 pair ❤
GHS Pressurewounds were the only strings that made my Fender MIM Standard Fretless Jazz Bass sound alright. Ended up selling it to fund a fretless Carvin B40, which still has the stock stainless steel roundwounds LaBella makes for Carvin. Maybe I'll get another set of Pressurewounds for it. Are these alright for string-through-body bridges, @TheGHSStrings ?
Dave, you're really selling me on these strings! I'm a diehard round-wounder (Rotos and Boomers), but the lessened string chatter and finger noise while leaving a healthy dose of bite and growl with these strings sure sounds sweet! Thanks for the fun demo videos - great marketing concept!
Thanks for choosing GHS Strings! We hope you like them!
We agree. Dave is a monster player who also writes some really beautiful solo pieces (like the one you mention).
I like this guy ... Is "Alloy 52" harder on frets than regular nickel ? I have slim vintage frets.
I just ordered a 2013 Fender Carbonita Bass and These GHS Pressurewounds will be the first set of strings I want to try!
Just ordered a set for my Squier 5 string Jazz Deluxe;can't wait to put them on and try them out.
That Precision bass just kills.....
@cottonfever1221 Almost forgot, they feel so close to a flatwound which are easy on the hands as well as the frets themselves but give the sound of a worn in(not worn out)set of rounds,I cant say enuff good things about them.
As a bass tech I recommend them to players who for one reason dont like the way their neck plays on their bass, and 9 out of 10 times their tension and gauge help to get their bass to play 100% better,on a finicky neck these strings work wonders getting better playability.
Put a set of this pressure wounds in my five string. And they rock. They take some bridge buzz away, low string finger noise and flatwound tone if I want it. Very happy with them.
Nice work on that fretless bass! Thanks from a bass man in New Hampshire!
Sound great on my Sterling stingray copy.
I'll bet it sounds amazing! Thanks for the shout.
I got a Sterling by Music Man 5-string Classic StingRay (25CA) which was converted to fretless. I loaded a 5-string pressure-wound set on it. For a fretless, it sounds amazing. I still get a fair amount of growling tones without making deep scratches to the fingerboard. The fretless bass community need to give these strings some recognition, totally worth it.
The funkiness of that fretboard is awesome.
Half-round is supposed to be reffering to the ground-wound, that start round and get one side ground off. Both are nice in their own way, pressure are more like a round with some of the high edge taken off, the groundwound have a bit of the flat sound combined with a bit of the round
These have been my absolute favorite, but since learning I have a pretty severe allergy to nickel, sadly I have had to give them up. I switched to Rotosound 55 solo bass, but they just aren't the same, too steel sounding and bite my fingers making it hard to slide. Does anyone know if the coated boomers come close to the sound of the pressure wounds?
We have sound clips of both on our Soundcloud page (www.soundcloud.com/ghsstrings) so you can compare both.
Pressure wounds are my favourite bass strings, hands down, but I can't seem to find them in 5 strings sets. Does anyone know where I can find a set for my 5? Or even just a single low b, as I have 4 string sets.
Hey, glad to hear that you liked the videos!
Hey Richard! Pressurewound strings would be perfect for the sound you’re after. Great sustain with a nice growl.
Thank you for these videos! When I bought my first bass (used) it came equipped with a set of Presicion flatwounds strings (I remember the purple silk at their ends) and I didn't care for them, being more attracted to punk-rock. Now, after 10 years, I finally got a new set of flatwounds and they are great. Absolutely lovely!
I would have tried Pressurewounds, but I can't find them in the countries where I live (Isreal and Romania)
Too bad!
Any suggestions?
1:04 - 2:04 Beautiful
I will be trying the strings out on my new Fender Carbonita P Bass .
@ejdbk You may want to try they Coated Bass Boomers, they are the classic Boomer string, but a little mellower due to the coating. Likewise the Pressurewound Flats are only slightly flattened and the brightest we offer in terms of a smooth flat wound sound.
See catch... I'm looking at the Pressurewounds and Boomers. Used to love the Boomers on 4-string fretted (in the 80s). Considering Pressurewounds for fretless. The catch? I now play 6-string basses in a 35.5" scale exclusively. Hipshot A bridge, no through-body, 3+3 headstock. Got anything for me to try???
How much more ridged is the texture compared to a traditional flatwound?
Dave, I just love listening to you on that fretless.
Great review!!
I love these strings on my 78 fretless Rick and they don't chew up the fretboard.
These are the BEST strings to play on a Fender,WHY ? Because the tension of them work well on the thinner necked Jazz bass and they add a nice line drawn down the middle sound between flats and rounds.
On a p-bass they give you the well known flatwound sound but can give you some of the crunchy brite-ness of a roundwound without the higher overtones of the roundwound strings.
Most of all they are the perfect tension to get a Fender bass to set-up well,AWESOME STRINGS !
Hi. What was the 1st year that Pressurewounds were made ?! Thanks
Are there extra long scale 5 string sets that would fit a 35" scale string through body bridge?
How would you compare the Pressurewounds to the GHS 3060 Nylon Tapewounds?
Great demo, but I’d like to know what these sound like played with a pick!
@tylerwylie I second this request. I've experimented with putting together my own balanced sets from singles and I felt it made me relax my technique and be more confident playing wide interval runs as opposed to sticking to proven grooves.
@ltdbassplayer The pressurewound are a stainless steel string, while the Tapewounds are Nylon. Overall the pressurewound will be brighter and give you more pop. The tapewound will be smoother sounding and emulate a more "upright" bass sound.
I just put these strings on my P-bass which has an SPB3 pickup (ash body, goncalno alves/pau ferro neck) and the tone is the bee's knees. The tone of the pickup and strings really compliment each other.
This guy rocks!!! The first ad which I don´t have a feeling of a sell out. I might give ghs a try :-)
And also , flatwound strings are good to play blues ?
Excellent! Let us know what you think of them; our social media guy loves them on his basses.
You can try the Boomers in the "Long Scale Plus" length, which should work up to a 36" scale. You can always build your own Custom Set with those or the "extra long scale" option for the lower strings to ensure that they all fit.
@TheGHSStrings
what would be the best type of the strings that would cut through but still sound dark and mellow?
I would like some strings that sound more metalic, like new strings. Would you recommand nikel wounded or stainless steel?
We would recommend our Super Steels; bright tone that will help you cut through the bluesy mix. Our Bass Boomers are also a great bass string for durability, and have a nice brilliance to them.
If I want to get a more fender sound from a thunderbird wich would be the strings to go?
Actually we offer a ground roundwond set called Brite Flats, The Pressurewound sets are actually slightly flattened in the winding process. Instead of grinding, the pressure from the process actually results in a slightly flattened string!
Will you guys post a video of your brite flats? I'm really interested in that. Hope to see you guys bring Dave to demo the brite flats since he was so enthusiastic about them, he's probably the best guy to do it. Been considering buying your brite flats and a video on them would sure help make a decision.
What are the best strings to play Blues? pressure wounds?
Just put these on my violin bass... made it come alive. Especially when muted with some foam, it has a nice clickiness and punch, it almost make the violin bass sound P-bass-esque, dare I say. Also, they're louder than the Rotosounds Monel 77s I had on there. And they sound really deep.
I was lucky enough to get a medium-scale set with the retro-looking packaging. You guys should stick with that instead of the packaging look seen in this video.
First fingerstyle song?
Can anyone tell me what the song is that Dave plays on the fretless?
@spynae The Pressurewound series should work great on most basses and bridges. The only problem I have run into is with the low B winding on a few string through bodies. Some basses have a little more length than others. However, the 4 string Carvin B40 should work well with these strings
how about slap? BTW these things should sound awesome with jazz bridge pups.
I like this guy !! great review...
@TheGHSStrings
great, the guy who runs thomsun is actually my bass teacher's friend, thanks a lot
@Socioistic It's "Skeleton" by Buddy Mondlock.
I have pressurewounds on my fretless and I love them. I tried super steels just for the hell of it, and they sent me running back to pressurewounds lol. The only downfall of pressurewounds is the high C string. .028 is way too damn light
@thenrylee It's because the camera has a hard time capturing around 40Hz.
For Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, what strings would you recommand?
Guitar Center Commack NY does not carry these and neither does Sam Ash Huntington Station NY. I want to try them Just can't find em'
Solelova67 Order online. Bassstringsonline.com His service and prices are exceptional.
I'll put in the suggestion. Given how mellow the Pressurewounds are already, it might not be feasible to put a coating over that, thus making them really dark sounding.
GHS Strings maybe you've read about my dismay with d'addario flatwound bass strings. The guys at d'addario were kind enough to send me 1 replacement set of strings.
I use multiple bass guitars for my gigs and recordingsessions. On my vintage Hofner 500/1 I used to put GHS flatwounds. And on my other Hofners I put D'addarios. Now I feel lost. Problem with D'addario strings is partly solved (they sent 1 new set) but my problem with GHS is that my A string snapped on me twice!
On my vintage 1962 Hofner 500/1 the GHS strings just sound beautiful. I always use flatwound strings and have never had problems with strings breaking before....help!
Paul, if you'd email me at jmoody AT ghsstrings DOT com, I'd be more than happy to get you some replacements.
Flats don't need a coating since they last forever. They don't wear like roundwound strings. that's why you never see them with a coating. I am not sure what you are thinking about why you would want a coating in the first place?
Maybe because flats sound and feel like they're 'dead' to begin with. In comparison to rounds, that is.
@MyPat9999 The Alloy 52 is a harder material than Nickel Plated or Pure Nickel strings, however not as hard as a pure stainless steel string. Overall the harder the material the faster a fret will wear.
Pressurewounds would be a good choice for that particular sound.
Flatwound strings would also give you a nice bright tone.
@tylerwylie Hey Tyler, we have been toying around with some prototypes here at the factory, we will let you know when we have something new to try out!
He's got a skeleton in his closet. He locks him up with a skeleton key. Whenever that skeleton gets thirsty, he has to drink his own pee.
Thank you! We meant to say, "Bluesy Tone" :)
We would recommend our Super Steels for a nice bright new sound!
I love the song you sang, real talent! Is it from your solo album?
hi! Just saw this. Yes, It's on my album "Tomorrow Never Knows" The first instrumental is on the album I am almost finished with. You can check all of my stuff out at www.davepomeroy.com. All the best!
GHS Strings can you make a tapered B string for 34 inch scale?
It's possible. We've got other immediate plans for the Pressurewounds first.
@ejdbk We actually have two, Thomsun Trading & Arbi Music/Massomi & Rezaei Co.
@TheGHSStrings
i see,do you have a distributor in the united arab emirates?
Definately will!
What song does he play at 1:05? If you can answer this GHS Ill buy the strings! lol
Hi Shubham! Thanks for asking. That tune is an unreleased instrumental called "A Clear View." Hope to record it for my next solo project. You can find more of my stuff at www.davepomeroy.com. Groove On...
Dave Pomeroy That's awesome, I hope to hear it soon! It's a beautiful piece
Is this going to be on "Angel in the Ashes" ???
Are you playing drop-d? The E string looks rather floppy compared to the rest.
thank a lot :)
What model is that fretless bass?
1:18 - 1:25 its gunna be a bright, bright sunshiny day?
thanks sir.... they seem to lose much definition... but yes, balanced and mellow...
Boomers (Flea, Piggy D) are always a great choice, but for more detailed info check out our brightness bar on our website. That should give you a better idea on how to tailor your bass sound.
What was that skeleton song?
the first song sounds kinda like Cherub Rock ^^
Looks like the obvious choice for me! Changing my strings soon and I think I'm moving from Boomers to these pressurewounds!
