Dear BKR, Thank you once again for another informative, and enjoyable piece. In the current socio-political environment, where a portion of America is attempting to Make America Great Again, it is interesting to see how politically, socially, and culturally conservative "That" America was. There are as many years between us now, and the America of The Legion Of Decency, as there was from that time, to the end of Slavery, and the American Civil War. At its heart this is an issue about change, both then, and now.

Once again, an exemplary entry. And (as always) deeply researched and informative. I knew about the problems with films about "race" in terms of the South (so many films were "banned", especially during the late 1940s, when Hollywood would try to make films addressing the nation's racial problems, such as PINKY, LOST BOUNDARIES, HOME OF THE BRAVE, and INTRUDER IN THE DUST, but had no idea that some of these cases went to trial, and that the appellate courts at the time upheld the bans because racial segregation was accepted as legal). Joseph L. Mankewicz had talked about this situation, because in 1950, his film NO WAY OUT was subjected to the same problems, and its restricted showings in the South and its ban in many urban centers in the North (such as Chicago), set the film up for failure. Mankiewicz was always proud of his film (he was proud of the fact that he went to NYC and went to places like the Negro Ensemble Company, to seek out black talent, finding people like Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, and to bring them to Hollywood), and he felt it was as important as his other 1950 film (which was the megahit ALL ABOUT EVE). So you make a compelling point about the attempt of the Catholic Legion of Decency to assert authority, and in a predominantly Protestant country, that went over like a lead balloon.

I'm 15 minutes into the video (great job as always, this is so captivating!) and I just want to say something that I find extremely ironic in all of this.
I'm italian, and as an italian studying cinema I have of course been exposed multiple times to Neorealismo and movies such as Rome open city. I distinctly remember, during one of our lessons, that a teacher of ours asked us how we thought Open city, which is, for anyone that hasn't seen it, a war movie set in Nazi-occupied Rome about the hardships and heroic deeds of the Resistance, had been promoted abroad (in the USA specifically, if I'm not wrong). Well, none of us guessed what the answer was.
Apparently, the initial promotion of the movie abroad relied very heavily on presenting it as a scandalous picture, harping on the fact that it included many 'osé' topics (i.e. female characters strolling around in lingerie -in their own changing rooms and bedrooms, how scandalous!-, a number of queer coded characters, Magnani's character being pregnant out of wedlock...). All of these elements were indeed in the movie but they were just part of the realism and crudness of the post war situation Rossellini (and subsequent neorealist pictures) were describing, but once the movie was brought to a foreign public which clearly hadn't that in its own pictures, they were sensationalized and turned into a spectacle to fill seats.
The hypocrisy of this whole ordeal.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that the Miracle promotes faith. Everyone in that movie ( us, the viewers included) knows, what has happened. The only exception being the main heroine. But more than that... This film condemns cruelty. Yes, she was pure soul lost in her mind, but it doesn't give us (and everybody in her village) to be cruel to her just because she was raped and her psyche choose to protect her from that in this way. Care and help is the right reaction, not mockery and physical cruelty.

The movie IS in fact religious. The story arc involves multiple actual miracles, and the main premise is that the novice ruins multiple lives by abandoning her vocation to holy orders! But the first part of the film makes it seem very sacrilegious, and the timing of what was released before and during the same time creating a kind of "simultaneous contrast" that did make it seem anti Catholic.

Excellent video. Honestly, U.S. film culture can be so repressed regarding themes and doesn't even watch the films it allegedly says are bad to watch. All the more reason to watch them. Also, as a former Catholic, the repression of free artistic expression and its connection to the Hays Code, censorship boards, etc is too finely linked. It's hard not to see a film made during the Hays Code where corners weren't cut finely just to get a notion across, and why there was such a sexual explosion in the late 60s into the 70s and 80s. So much was repressed.
Also, I think it's fascinating that the theme of The Miracle was more contentious than the lead actress in the film. When Anna Magnani won her Oscar for doing a Hollywood film, one had to think if that was a peer-driven way for Hollywood to recognize her previous films for shaking the barley for their own freedom of speech through artistic expression.
