      Main villain(s) are blonde researchers disguised as cops, original concept for Resident Evil involved the characters being cyborgs, ‘battle system’ involves sweeping a cursor over zombies with a time limit in place (which is how you fight in RE Gaiden,) and Cathy seems to be a mix of Rebecca Chambers and Claire Redfield. I wonder if the RE team played through or heard of this when they were figuring out how to design their game?

    I have an idea why the world logic makes no sense: They originally had the zombie apocalypse underway for a month when the game starts, then came up with the plot about Doc and the zombie serum, they wanted to put that stuff in but didn't want to start from scratch. So they crammed it in, tried to make work and it failed.

    "the officer gets killed by the zombie cat"
    LOL. Reminds me of an old DnD thing I heard meant to show off the silly side effects of the stat based combat. Should a basic human peasant and a regular house cat get into fight then statwise, its very likely the cat would win.

    Imagine my surprise seeing this video mention not only the Saori incident, but also 16bit Sensation! Not too long ago, I took a look at the manga and it had a couple notes talking about the incident and how it resulted in the creation of a sort of content regulations board for adult PC games. For those interested in reading it, bare in mind it's a very different story from the anime, which might be more appropriate to call a spin-off instead of an adaptation.

  • @StoneCresent

    Dead of the Brain was the first PC-98 game I played !
    It was one of the game that I was hooked by the graphics and it's gore when I was a teenager and wished I could play it someday (since it was a visual novel in japanese only) and that wish became a reality a couple of years ago when it got a fan translation. This is how my PC-98 addiction started ! :)

    Amazing video here, but the translation that is available now is machine translated, and is weirdly inaccurate at points, taking dumb liberties with the script. I wouldn’t recommend playing it.
    However, there are more translations in the works. I am currently over 50% done with hacking the PC-98 version with a new script translated by a friend of mine. Another friend is also doing porting our script to the X68000 version, and I’m planning on also porting the script to the FM Towns version. The PC-98 translation is the only one with a planned release date, which will definitely be October 31.
    Someone else is also doing a PC Engine CD translation of only the first game. English and French. The translation is completely independent from mine though, and I’m not sure which one of the translations will be preferred.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  10 месяцев назад +5

      [EDIT] OK. I did not know that the currently available English patch for the PC-98 Dead of the Brain was unpopular, and I personally have not played through all of it, so let me be diplomatic and start again here:
      I am anxiously looking forward to any upcoming announcements on any new language patches for Dead of the Brain on any platforms. The more fan translations there are, the better, and I am sure that the upcoming translations will be an improvement. I kind of wish now that I had waited to make a video about this game so that I could plug the new translations in the video. Thanks to you and David for your work.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  10 месяцев назад +2

      @jackdbs Although I'm sure your translations will be better, I really feel the need to say a couple things: The person who made the old DoTB1 translation may have been an unpopular character and I don't know the history behind him at all, but I want to be fair and make sure not to unnecessarily malign him either.
      I did notice some liberties he took in his translation, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad IMO. That is exactly what pros do, in fact, when localizing games. The original Japanese story in this game is kind of weird and I can see places where it could be made more coherent with some changes. I know fans generally don't like it when things are changed but, sometimes, it is for the best, in my (probably unpopular) opinion.
      Also, the statement that it is "machine translated" is a bit unfair and misleading because even if it was originally machine translated, it has clearly been cleaned up into a funny and easily readable script. (Naming the cat "Schrodinger" instead of "Kitty"? Awesome!) It is not raw machine translated text, and clearly more work was put into it than what one would expect from a cheap "machine translated" patch. From taking a look around at what people have said about the translator, I get the feeling that perhaps one, or maybe two people said that this guy's translations are inaccurate, machine-translated, and bad and it then became the gospel truth on the Internet. Seems maybe a bit unfair from my outsider's perspective, but I apologize if I am way off base here. Even if all of that is 100% accurate about his translations, he still deserves credit for hacking the code and bothering to release the patch at all.
      I have seen far FAR worse fan translations on these old Japan PC's that are hardly even readable. The currently available DoTB1 translation may be even among the better patches I have seen on the PC-98, IMO. All that being said, once again I have only played all the way through the Japanese version of the game and have not read the entirety of the English patch.
      Again, though, I am very glad you guys are making new patches cause I'm sure they will be even better, and more choice is always a good thing. It will also, of course, be amazing to have the game available in English finally on the PCE, and even the X68000 and FM Towns!

    • @davidshadoff4267
      @davidshadoff4267 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@BasementBrothers @jackdbs I find it's interesting to compare two different translations of the same source material - a couple of Haruki Murakami's works have had separate (and very seemingly different) translations published by two different professional translators.
      I had also heard that the original PC-98 translation was "machine translated", and agree with you - that even if it was, it was edited sufficiently to become internally-consistent and have a proper flow, even if I wasn't a fan of some of the stylistic choices made. As you say, there are "translations" which take even more liberties (I'm looking at you, Working Designs !).
      I'm not saying that my stylistic choices will be well-liked... I tried to stick to the original script (which had its own issues and inconsistencies). My co-translator (who is native Japanese) had a few choice words to say about the quality of it...
      I hope people will enjoy my translation though.
      I think I will put up a quick Twitter rant about machine translation though, because I think peoples' opinions are way too polarized on it, and need to understand it a bit better. Brief summary: Humans can be bad translators too. And editors are needed just as much as - and are every bit as important as - the translators.

    Loved this episode, it indeed felt just right for Halloween season. Never heard of this game before, but I found that the atmosphere and artwork really sold me on the whole concept and made the evident flaws not that annoying to deal with it. In fact, it's probably the first time I actually skipped some portions of the video to avoid spoilers. My one suggestion for future videos of these type of adventure/rpg games would be to dedicate a section to detail which artists were involved in these projects. I thought about this because I'd like to know who made the art for Dead of the Brain. Now that I mention it, I also remember the Slayers video 'cause the art was superb and just like the one in the novels.
    Finally, I was about to recommend you that 16BIT anime but it seems you're aware of it already.

The amount of humor to be had at the nonsense plot and character logic is almost as absurd as the writing. I definitely remember getting stuck for a bit trying to trigger the event at the end of that hallway, and the 'clear this rubble by shooting it' bits distinctly. I haven't gotten to play too many of this style of PC-98 game, so I'm still holding out hope that the rest of the Nightmare Collection games will get an English translation patch. NintendoComplete did a full playthrough of the PC-98 version of this game with the English patch back on Halloween 2020, and I enjoyed watching the game in action for the most part.
    I think _Dead of the Brain_ should have gotten a console conversion and/or update on either the Sega CD or Saturn. Granted, on the hypothetical chance that the game got released on either of the aforementioned consoles and pulled off a Western release, the localization process would probably have been one of the most extensive ones ever done to a video game. Obviously, the explicit nudity and attempted r--e scene would not fly in the West, not to mention that all of the references to horror movies and horror icons (i.e., the blatant "grave" of Stephen King that Dr. Cooger just so accidentally spills his apocalyse-creating concoction on) would have been removed.
    As for the storytelling and plot holes, I think the issue was that writer was trying to tell an American B-grade movie plot from the perspective of being a foreigner, and might not have been familiar with such American details and nuances. Anyway, great video.

    Thanks a lot for this longplay of the PC98 version!
    I hadn't been able to make it run on any emulator, and the PC Engine version just doesn't compare to the PC98 hi-res pixel art. Also, the low resolution makes text even harder to read (especially Japanese). The game is pure gold, more absurd and funny than I thought.
    Not naming the doc "Cougar" was a lost chance on the developers' part.^^

    Stoked to see a new episode, and a Halloween one at that! Thanks again for putting these videos together.

    Funny, just a few days after this was posted, an English patch for the TurboCD version was released. Although it's just the first game that's translated, not both.

    I'd imagine the scene where Mamoru talks to his PC98 is what you'd be like irl.

    16Bit Ace is awesome, thanks for the recommendation. Mamoru talking about Windows reminded me of shit I said in the 90s.

    weird thing about Nose is i once found some "official translation" that says his english name is actually supposed to be North....idk why that translates to "Nose" in the english patch. 😐
    also idk what "Norze" is supposed to mean tho, i know Norz means "six" in enochian language (only know that cuz the black metal band Impaled Nazarene has a album called _Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz_ idk if there's a connection there to the number 6 to his japanese name tho)

      @BasementBrothers  10 месяцев назад +1

      North would be wrong though, since it's ノーズ in Japanese, not ノース. I can see why someone would just look at the Japanese name though and say, "Fuck it, North is a good enough English version of that weird name."

    From the title to the whole aesthetics, this game actually knows what makes up 80s Horror B- (or less) movies well. At least QTE-ish part isn't as horrendous as Birdemic's battle scene.
    >Story doesn't make sense
    I believe that that's how lots of the generic horror movies (especially for the ones that crew members actually just want to take gore shots instead of genuine horror scenes) go, even back in the days. It might also be an indication that, even back then, Zombie Apocalypse movies were rife with live-human characters even dumber than the said zombies.

    A great game review choice given Halloween is coming up. It would be cool to see more horror type games reviewed.

    Not that a Simpsons clip is always the answer but clearing the rubble with a gun could have lead nicely to the scene of Homer using a gun to open beer, change TV channels and "turn off" lights.

    Basement Brothers I have a really humble request for you to review Kagerou Meikyuu for any platforms you might be able to acquire, one of the most visually unique games I've ever seen (the versions are radically different depending on the platform too) and I'd really like to have an idea about what the hell its about.

    Despite the English subtitle sounding like a George Romero movie inspiration, the start of this game is really similar to Return of the Living Dead, mixed with Reanimator.

    Killing a cat and bringing it back to life multiple times is a pretty overt reference to the movie reanimator
