My pick for today is:
Albert Cummings
“True to Yourself”
Albert Cummings is an American blues musician. He recorded with Blind Pigs Records. He was born in Willimstown MA. He played with BB King,Buddy Guy, and many other blues musicians. His active years are 1999 to present. In his younger years he started playing the banjo. Cummings was a follower of SRV. He saw SRV perform while he was still in college. He worked in his later years with Double Trouble in the Rhythm section. In 2003 he put out a self released “From the Heart”. Cummings was signed with a multi album deal Blind Pigs Records in 2004. #8 Threshold - Subsurface
Threshold are synonymous with the term melodic Prog Metal band in the 2000s. They are very melodic and catchy, and feature a lot of instrumental solos, but the modern production sets them apart from the countless Dream Theater clones or '70s Prog Rock made into Metal.
The overtly catchy "Ground Control", or "Stop Dead"with that fragmented riffing are good examples of this, as is the riff-heavy "Pressure". Aside from the softer "Flags And Footprints", all the songs mostly follow the same recipe as above, but with each of them being unique.
I first heard Subsurface in September of '05, and I still can't find a weak link in this album.
It's a must listen if you like strong melodies, skillful songwriting and brilliant musicianship.
Favorite Tracks:
"Ground Control"
"Stop Dead"
"Opium"
"Pressure"
"Flags And Footprints"

8. Fairport Convention - 'Over the Next Hill'
Considered their best LP since 1978's 'Tippler's Tales,' this one holds a special place in their huge catalog: they re-recorded Dylan's 'Si Tu Dois Partir' ("If You Have to Go") for this release, having originally recorded it on their 'Unhalfbricking' 1969 album, the last song drummer Martin Lamble played on before his untimely death in their 1969 tour bus accident. For this album, they isolated Martin's original '69 drum track and added their instrumentation on playback. Simon Nicol said it was emotionally overwhelming, as though Martin was back with them again for a while. Featuring Simon, Dave Pegg, Ric Sanders, Chris Leslie and ex Tull drummer Gerry Conway (who died about nine weeks ago). Includes 'I'm Already There,' 'Willow Creek' and 'Some Special Place.'

@@RailyardDogTom-do1mq your welcome Tom. It’s cool here too but it’s cloudy and we’re in the 60s
Good pick Railyard. Besides the 60s music and 70s and blues rock i like some folk music as well. A friend of mine had their stuff but with Sandy Denny as their vocalist. She was a great singer. I dont think i ever heard them without her singing. Is she on your choice for today?
@@dennisstratton6508 Thank you Dennis. I love Sandy Denny as well. Sadly, she isn't on this LP. A singer named Christine While (pronounced "Wiley") is helping out Fairport on this one. Sandy died in 1978 and her recordings with Fairport are awesome. You sure picked a great Leslie West CD, I'm listening to it right now.

#9 Mofro - Lochloosa
The band would later change their name to JJ Grey & Mofro.

Hi Shaun. Interesting pick and article
8- Green Day - American Idiot
“Dookie” and “American Idiot” are the only two Greenday albums I like and own. I don't consider them masterpieces but very good albums. American Idiot would be its most political and oppositional side in terms of the lyrics of the songs, which on the other hand is nothing more than a simple guitar punk with some power ballads.

Hi everyone. It's Magenta with 'Seven' for me today. Really strong prog material and my favourite album by this band. The concept of the album, such as it is, is linked by the song titles, which are the seven deadly sins. (Although the lyrical content doesn't always reflect the titles). The music is epic, though.

Day 8 pick is Guitarded by Leslie West recorded on the voice print label. Everybody knows Leslie West from Mountain and WBL but he also made his mark as a solo artist 16 solo cds dating back to his first one just called Mountain. Great Fatsby and Leslie West Band came out in the 70s. From 1988 til 2015 he recorded 13 more cds including Guitarded in 2004. Most of the songs were rerecordings with guest stars like Crosscut Saw with Aynsley Dunbar. Stormy Monday with Popa Chubby and If Heartaches Were Nickels with Joe Bonamassa and Greg Allman. Overall it was one of his better solo efforts.

Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon
Aha Shake Heartbreak is the second studio album by American band Kings of Leon, released by RCA in November 2004. Building on the electrifying Allman Brothers x Pixies sound of their debut album, a singular fusion of hard-boogie Southern and atmospheric alternative influences, this sophomore effort showcases a comparatively more refined and expansive musical style while maintaining the magic of early KoL: unbridled energy, instantly memorable guitar parts atop a vice-grip-tight rhythm section, and Caleb Followill's raspily distinctive, emotively howling vocals. A minor success in the U.S. and a major, platinum-certified one in the United Kingdom, the album solidified Kings of Leon's status as one of their generation's most formidable groups and paved the way for their “Sex on Fire”- and “Use Somebody”-propelled graduation to even greater fame and fortune four years later.
Choice cuts: “The Bucket,” “Four Kicks”
Prior 2004 selections -
Antics by Interpol
A Grand Don't Come for Free by the Streets
Hopes and Fears by Keane
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb by U2

Hi folks, just a quick one today probably as I'm out and about a bit - famous last words!
Anyway, straight on with a band that shouldn't need any sort of introduction to most of the SoT faithful, and the band's fifth album, emerging 10 whole years after the fourth, which is why I picked it for the comeback topic too...,
TESLA "Into The Now" (T&T/Noise)
Still featuring the original five man line up from their classic debut, 1986's Mechanical Resonance, "ITN" showcases the band's unique take on heavy, melodic blues rock, Jeff Keith's raw, impassioned vocals meshing with Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch's dual guitars, Brian Wheat's bass and Troy Lucketta's drums providing a solid, driving rhythm section.
Loads of great tracks, Heaven Nine Eleven, Mighty Mouse, Miles Away, Recognize, Words Can't Explain... excellent stuff all ends up from one of the best bands out there.
Hi Iain. Interesting pick and article. Have a great day.
Great stuff Iain. Tesla had a sound that really transcended the whole glam/hair metal era and like Badlands and a few others was more rootsy and harked back to the great blues rock bands of the 70s.
Hi Iain.. Truly an amazing choice.. Tesla can't go wrong with them.. Hope all is well.. Have a great rest of the weekend our friend..
Today`s pick: California Guitar Trio - "Whitewater". All acoustic and all instrumental band formed by three guys who met at a Robert Fripp Guitar Craft course. Most of their albums consist of a mix of originals and covers. Covers range from Rock, pop, jazz, and surf to classical. This one is mostly originals with two covers - Bach, and a mash-up of Ghost Riders In The Sky and Riders on The Storm. To me, this album has a proggier feel than some of their others. In part, that`s due to the use of effects making the acoustic guitars sound electric or like synths, and also Tony Levin produced it. Complex, but beautifully melodic compositions.
Hey Jeffrey. I'm not familiar with your pick. Sounds cool, I'll have to check it out.
Hi Jeffrey. Never heard of your pick. Interesting article

Drive By Truckers - The Dirty South
Excellent pick!
Chexked out a few songs the other day and I dug it.
Julianna Hatfield - In Exile Deo
I submit that Julianna has some fine music from several years as a singer/songwriter and Indie rocker. She played at Lilith Fair but set herself up as a singular talent who sounds unlike most of her contemporaries.
Three songs on this album define it for me.
“Forever” is a kind of ballad that has some muscle behind it. In many of her tunes they start off slow and rock out pretty hard. This is a really cool song of balance and style.
“Dirty Dog” is just a good rocker. It’s gets right down to the essence of what makes a great song.
“Because We Love You” is the best of the bunch ! It rocks hard with an excellent melody. The guitar matches with the organ to drive the song home. This song is just so good. If you just listen to the music it will remind you of the best Rolling Stones tune. This one really cooks !!
I read that she wanted this album to be more accessible than most of her albums. And it is. This IMO would be a good place to start to get into her music. I have only dabbled in her records before; but I am fascinated by what I discover there. Julianna Hatfield puts the “meat on the bone” in a very tasty way. That’s what separates her from the run of the mill talent. She delivers the goods !!
Hi Richard. Interesting pick and article

Green Day - American Idiot
I’m not a great fan of punk rock in general or this band in particular but there is no denying the quality of this album. Among the standout songs for me are the title track, Jesus Of Suburbia, Holiday, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Whatsername.

Aerosmith-Honkin' On Bobo. Before the Rolling Stones and before Slash, Aerosmith did an album of Blues covers. In interviews, Steven Tyler has said that the band was introduced to these Blues artists through bands like The Rolling Stones. They cover Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson. They even covered Little Walter a decade before the Stones did on Blue & Lonesome. They also covered the Aretha Franklin song I Never Loved A Man(The Way I Love You) as Never Loved A Girl. They also cover an old Fleetwood Mac song from the Peter Green era called Stop Messin' Around. They do covers of Baby Please Don't Go(also covered by Them, The Amboy Dukes, Ted Nugent solo, and AC/DC), Eyesight To The Blind(previously covered by the Who on Tommy), and You Gotta Move(covered by the Stones on Sticky Fingers). Back Back Train and the aforementioned Stop Messin' Around feature lead vocals by Joe Perry. Joe plays Hurdy Gurdy on Train to give it a Middle Eastern feel. Singer Tracy Bonham(who had a hit with a song called Mother Mother in 1996) sings addition vocals on Back Back Train and Jesus Is On The Main Line. The latter features Steven Tyler's daughter Chelsea on backing vocals. They do one original called The Grind. This brings back the Aerosmith raunch, but with a modern twist. Jack Douglas even worked on it.

My pick for today is Hayden - Elk-Lake Serenade. Canadian singer songwriter with a warm, fragile voice. @@HockeyDudeJames2 Cool, thanks.
My pick for today DRIVETRAIN by. 38 SPECIAL. A bit divisive amongst some fans who don't like it and others like me who do enjoy it's harder edged fuller sounding feel. I tend to refer to this as. 38's Thunder and Lightning album. It looks highly likely that this will be the final album by the band, as was T & L for Thin Lizzy and like that album, this really doesn't sound like anything else in their discography. Opener Something I Need sets the tone, this is a heavier sounding. 38 Special than just about anything they've done before. An almost grungey guitar riff dominating the song and Don Barnes' vocals sounding rougher than ever before in contrast to his usual smooth radio rock style. Hurts Like Love follows suit and then we get Donnie's first lead vocal on 3rd track, the tongue in cheek Haley's Got A Harley, built around more grungey sounding riffs. There are still many of the usual. 38 traits here though with Don and Donnie swapping lead vocals, often in the same song and the still excellent guitar work. The Squeeze is an excellent riff fueled hard rocker with a lyric that still unfortunately resonates today whilst Hiding From Yourself is another of their supremely catchy pop rock gems. Trooper With An Attitude is another pulsating rocker with shades of Oh Well in its DNA. Closer Sheriff's County Line is an excellent tale of forbidden love and passion leading to murder played over a backing that mixes laid back with full on hard rock sections. Whilst this may not have pleased all their fans, for me, if this is to be. 38's final album, they have gone out on a high.
Love 38 Special, Jerry. Thumbs up from me!

Day 5: Asia - Silent Nation

**No Particular Order**
8 Death Angel "The Art Of Dying"
7 Iced Earth "The Glorious Burden"
6 Avril Lavigne "Under My Skin"
5 Aerosmith "Honkin' On Bobo" (Thanks to our friends Christopher Coles & Drew Rose. Heard this 1st time couple days ago on Sunday.. ROCKS!!!!!!!!)
4 K**lers "Hot Fuss"
3 Exodus "Tempo Of The Damned"
2 Green Day "American Idiot"
1 Wicked Minds "From The Purple Skies" (Likened To Hammond Driven Deep Purple And Uriah Heep)
Hey there, weirdly Death Angel were one of those early thrash bands I couldn't get into, mainly down to the vocals I think. I gave their newest one a listen when it came out and still felt much the same. Odd really, given I had no trouble with early Exodus and Slayer, for instance...
Hi Mark N Mandy. Heard of your pick but never listened to them before. Interesting list
Great choice.
@@iainhead9898 Hi Iain.. I can totally understand.. His voice took a while for me to get used to.. By the time of 2nd album "Frolic through the park" i was won over.. Hope all is well.. Have a great rest of the weekend our friend..
@@melaniethurber5117 Hi Melanie.. Thanks.. Hope all is well.. Have a great rest of the weekend our friend..
My Day 8 Pick:
Slipknot - Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)
I know this album generated some controversy, because it was more melodic and experimental than the self-titled and Iowa. However, it's my favorite album from the band!
"Duality," "Vermillion," and "Before I Forget" were the album's singles. The latter two are my favorites on the album. I also really dig "The Blister Exists," "Three Nil," "Opium of the People," and "The Nameless."
My pick today is Kitty Jay, the 2nd solo album by the Devon-born English folk singer-songwriter & fiddle player Seth Lakeman. A mixture of self-penned songs with a few traditional ones, largely based around Dartmoor stories and legends.
Great pick Mike, the follow up Freedom Fields is great as well.
8. Monster Magnet- Monolith Baby
9. Slipknot- Vol. 3
10. Clutch- Blast Tyrant
11. Damage Plan- New Found Power
12. Nonpoint- Recoil
13. Alter Bridge- One Day Remains
14. Orphaned Land- Mabool
15. Velvet Revolver- Contraband
Iced Earth terrific album!
#8 My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light
Pick #8: Slipknot's Volume 3. I admit sometimes I'm more of a singles person these days when it comes to Slipknot and I'm guilty of tuning them out from time to time and I sometimes get a bit burnt out from them, but Volume 3 is probably the one I reach for the most often and is definitely my favorite Slipknot album.
#15: Within Temptation's The Silent Force
#14: Incubus's A Crow Left of the Murder
#13: Franz Ferdinand's Franz Ferdinand
#12: Modest Mouse's Good News For People Who Love Bad News
#11: My Chemical Romance's Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
#10: Killswitch Engage's The End of Heartache
#9: Mastodon's Leviathan
#8: Slipknot's Volume 3
Honorable Mentions:
Dillinger Escape Plan's Miss Machine
Halo 2 Soundtrack
Sum 41's Chuck
Nightwish's Nemo
Black Keys' Rubber Factory
Megadeth's The System Has Failed
Motörhead's Inferno
Taking Back Sunday's Where You Want To Be
Interpol's Antics
Lenny Kravitz' Baptism
Wilco's A Ghost is Born
Arcade Fire's Funeral
Rise Against's Siren Song of the Counter Culture
There are some songs I like off it but can't really get into it from front to back. Their last album was pretty bad minus a few songs lol
I do love the song Before I Forget
@@tomp8463 My favorite is probably Vermillion Pt. 1
Day 8. Nineteen88 - The Great American Rock And Roll Spectacle This is a rock and roll record. All the great influences are here for the band to work with in AC/DC, Kiss, and even some Nugent. What we have is some top-notch nuts and bolts hard rock bordering on metal at times. This is a record to party with.
1. AdrianGale - Crunch
2. Dynasty - Motus Perpetuus
3. Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers - True Companion
4. Eterna - Epiphany

Hi Logan.. Great choice.. A band that a lot don't give a chance due to final countdown.. When rest of their catalogue is totally different and fantastic.. Hope all is well.. Have a great rest of the weekend our friend..
Today's pick: "Mastermind" by The Cocktail Slippers. They are an all-female garage/pop rock band from Oslo Norway.
8. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
This Scottish band did little to dispel the sense of impermanence with the post-punk revival by shooting their wad on their first album. Normally I would have found this hybrid of Josef K and garish dance-punk a bit headache inducing, but it's the quality of their songwriting that has me keeping them around and out of the indie landfill. While the double-entendre of "Take Me Out" is still their signature statement, most of the songs are not far behind. And while the consistency slipped over their next four albums through 14 years, their art rock/glam collaboration with Sparks (FFS, 2014) is pretty damn delightful.
9. Motörhead - Inferno
10. Razorlight - Up All Night
11. Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
12. Isis - Panopticon
13. Interpol - Antics
14. Electric Wizard - We Live
15. Tom Waits - Real Gone
08- Threshold - Subsurface [Progressive Metal]
09- The Tangent - The World That We Drive Through [Eclectic Prog]
10- Mindflow - Just the Two of Us-Me and Them [Progressive Metal]
11- Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender [Avantgarde]
12- Imperia - The Ancient Dance of Qetesh [Symphonic Metal]
13- Black Bonzo - Black Bonzo [Heavy Prog]
14- Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve [Holiday]
15- David Arkenstone - Atlantis: A Symphonic Journey [New Age]
Today's pick is Vomitory-Primal Massacre. This is Vomitory's 4th album and it is absolutely one of their best. Great riffage and brutal vocals and memorable songs from one of Sweden's finest. A very cool album from this ferocious somewhat underground Death Metal band.
Hey Yoke. I've never heard this album. I'll have to check it out.
@@christophercoles4401 Hey Chris. It is very good if you like DM.
Hi Yoke. Interesting pick and article

Sonic Nurse -Sonic Youth. Stoned and Dude Ranch Nurse fave tracks.
My pick today Dharmakaya by the Steepwater Band . My favorite album by the band.
Kinda of sourhernish rock band. Can be hard rocking at times . But an over all excellent rock album
#8: Axel Rudi Pell: Kings & Queens
My picks are in no particular order. My pick #8 is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds : Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus.
Making up for days we missed in May.. SOT's obscure underrated albums..
22. Tyburn Tall "Tyburn Tall" (1970)
Very ELP like.. Progressive and Hammond Driven. Brilliant heavy progressive rock musicianship out of Germany. Come to find out Mandy actually seen the Hammond organ player from this band. When she's seen Phantom of the opera at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. This is before she went blind. He played the famous pipe organ at the Fox Theater. We thought that was incredible. but no surprise when you hear this album. If you like your progressive rock Hammond organ driven And that is not an understatement. Check out this album. very highly recommended...........
Hi guys, don't know this one at all - nice back story: PHANTOM is my daughter's favourite musical - she sings Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again beautifully...

10. ALELA DIANE - The Pirate's Gospel
11. GREY DELISLE - The Graceful Ghost
12. ELLIOTT SMITH - From A Basement On The Hill
Nice Shirt Pete!!! U.D.O -Thunderball is my pick today!!,,,your pick was great too!
For #8 going with Tempo of the Damned by Exodus.
This was the first Iced Earth album I ever heard and loved it!
Today’s favorite pick of 2004 is CIRCLE OF SNAKES by DANZIG. Talk about your dark, gloomy, doom recordings! There’s no need to give each composition here its own letter grade as all the numbers, while are different different sounding from each other, I’m grading them all with a B+.
Glenn Danzig, on occasions, sounds like later period Jim Morrison, say from The Doors L.A. woman LP. All the other times he sounds as if he’s channeled Jim Morrison in some unholy seance and so now Morrison is singing through Glenn Danzig from his grave!
This is an album that I like to use for a snarling weightlifting session.
This albums cumulative grade is B+
Great pick Andy.
@@christophercoles4401 Thanks Chris. We're off to Cape May in a little while so I won't be doing much at SOT today.
@@andymudrock322 That's cool. Enjoy the day! 😁
Hi Andy. Interesting pick and article. Have a good time today on your trip.
Hi Andy, have to admit to not being big on Danzig, and that's as much down to the vocals as anything: your reference to Jim Morrison would explain it too, as I've never really liked The Doors very much either for much the same reason. I've also heard Glenn referred to as the metal Elvis and this, perhaps, is another reason why I've left the building...
Hope you have/are having/had a great day at Cape May, wherever that may be!
Aimee Mann Live at St. Ann's Warehouse

Now Schaffer has a new important date in history: January 6, 2021. Maybe one day he'll get a chance to sing about that.
Absolute joke that he’s still in jail.
And someday you’ll be able to accept the proven fact that this was a setup from Pelosi and the only ones who did damage were BLM, Antifa, some Illegals and FBI informants framing the Trump supporters as they dressed in MAGA Gear. One day you’ll figure that out. Carry on!
@@JoeDibiase386next time someone says "I won"- but he has NO PROOF that he won, DONT BELIEVE HIM AND STAY HOME!!
@@JoeDibiase386 Yeah, he was only armed with bear spray. Can't say that I condone the violence that day, but I've heard nothing about Schaffer having engaged as such.
@@garytwwernke4171The only thing that I figured out was that misleaders such as Pelosi and Trump belong to political cults and really don't give a shit about most of us. It's most of us vs them (the power elite), not left vs right, Democrat vs Republican, blue vs red, donkey vs elephant and so on. Haven't you figured out that your vote is infinitesimal? They do this to confuse the masses leaving everyone to fight over the scraps. This is the nature of divide and conquer.
I'm only curious as to what Schaffer's take on his experience would be. I didn't say anything about Trump's speech prior to the insurrection. I never said that I was a BLM proponent. I never mentioned any thing about the Oathkeepers until now. They are all groups and I am a free agent.
All of the presidents who have resided in the White House since at least WWII have technically been war criminals who have ultimately submitted to the military-industrial/congressional/banking complex --- including Kennedy. Do you suppose Trump would be any different? You've got at least 40+ years of media material to infer that Trump is a self-absorbed, narcissistic sociopathic crook who is only interested in serving himself; and to be honest, the rest of the politicians and obscenely wealthy motherf___ers don't fall too far behind.
Have you figured that one out yet?
