Style of architecture called functionalism was very popular in the Third Reich and yes Germany got bombed out badly but so did Stalingrad ,Rotterdam , Coventry and many other European cities that were trying to stop the Nazis from taking over the world.
I was in Paris some weeks ago and was surprised how dreary and gray this city looks as soon as you step out of the inner center around louvre, Eiffel tower, Place the la concorde, Arc de Triomphe etc. Yes, the center is pretty with well preserved buildings but it's very homogeneous. A year ago I was in Berlin and in direct comparison it is much more diverse, green, colorful and even the modern buildings are quite unique and stylish. But everybody says Paris is the most beautiful city in the world and Berlin is cold and ugly. I don't get it. OK they are very different for historical reasons but that doesn't necessarily mean that one of those is "ugly" in itself. And people are complaining about a single glass cube in Berlin next to the Central Station (which I find very nice) while other big cities fill their entire inner city with skyscrapers. I really don't get it.^^
