What makes this performance even crazier is that it was a surprise! Now one knew she was gonna be there because she was in the middle of a world tour and surprise, she's opening the show! And this is the first time we saw her perform this full song, on tour she stopped at the Kendrick part. Also this performance is basically a fancy version is the Formation World Tour performance. She stood there dancing in the ice cold water every show (while pregnant in the last couple of shows). And the cherry on the top was the Kendrick showing up. I love when they collaborate, both on records and live!
As soon as she got off stage she left to go perform a show on FWT in London.
This performance almost did not happen beause BET did not want to allow the water on stage.

The bodies lying in the water represents how slaves were brought over on the ships. Many were thrown overboard. So many meanings. Absolutely beautiful. I saw this when they performed and it still brings tears to my eyes. Such a powerful performance.

I wrote my first comment before watching the full video. Thank you for speaking up. I couldn't have said it better than myself. 👏👏👏 This choice of song for VP Harris' campaign is perfect and strategic. We all have to fight. As she says in her campaign video "We choose freedom".
I'll never forget how some people went on the attack against her saying "she thinks she's better than everybody. She didn't even stay to attend the show, she's arrogant etc" when in fact; she had to fly to London immediately after this performance coz she had a show to do there. She was literally on stage, performing a 3 hours show 8 hours after she did this!

The Formation performance at Superbowl, Daddy Lessons performance at CMAs and Freedom performance at BET Awards all in the same year! A lot was happening and it still impacted the art that she created after (The Gift, Everything Is Love, Cowboy Carter) The Lemonade era was so powerful, political and impactful in ways people will never forget. This era was really a cultural movement. Her magnum opus to these days as a whole.

I ran to that performance immediately after watching Kamala Harris walk out to Freedom a couple of days ago. Makes me emo every single time and it feels like it's my first time. 🥹 Very powerful with extraordinary lyrics. This will always be a very powerful performance! BLM was going hard at this time and this was a surprise performance too so it made it 100x more special and impactful! As a biracial woman who identifies as a black women the hate that my community deals with everyday this song brings a fire in my soul! I’m so tired of all the killings of my people and flat out murder with Sonia Massey my heart breaks but I’m also angry because when will this stop! We are all humans, we all bleed red, we put our pants on one leg at a time. We need to stop and love and appreciate one another and come together!!!
