That made me laugh out loud. And not because it was funny but because it is so true. I binged the entire show a while back and his character was tangible especially after meeting some folks like Ray.
I have to disagree. Ray is always a straight shooting, reasonable guy. He's scary IF you cross him, but simply do what you should and you'll be ok. Not like those mobster lunatics who kill you for "respect" or whatever...

pretty interesting bit of psychology their.. Terry was clearly willing to take a hell of beating rather than pay up.. but once it became very clear his family were the one's in real danger rather than himself, he just couldn't hold out and folded
I think he knew they wouldn’t actually kill him, cause if he’s dead then there’s no money to be collected. The family on the other hand was totally disposable.
These gambling attics, or other kinds of people that use money for drugs, or whatever often are that way because they need the money they have for whatever it is that they’re using it for… Business ventures, drugs, gambling, and if they give it up, then they’re dead in the water. So if they have to take a beating ,that’s temporary. But when you threaten their family like Ray did now you’re speaking a different language that they understand you’re not playing around.
I've been to Kirribilli-it sucks. Kirribilli House is pretty much the only nice part and everything else is painfully narrow streets squirming between crappy blocks of flats. Even the street that goes to Kirribilli House feels like a cyberpunk alleyway until you get to the end and there's a nice gate with a threat from the military for anyone acting suspicious.
I know. He’s such a pleasant guy but carries that “not to be messed with” vibe that exudes within the darkness that is Ray. It’s not an easy trick to pull off.
I knew a guy like that in the air force. He always smiled just when he was about to do something very violent. Not a big guy, either, but he took down men bigger than him in fights.
I've known a couple of people like Ray, not hitmen, but terrifyingly committed to their own code of conduct. The only example I can give clearly, is when a guy was being a dick to a friend of mine. My friend just smiled, a very Ray Shoestring smile. Little bit later, the dickhead came up to my friend and apologised, shook his hand, offered to buy the table drinks. Friend never said a word. Apparently someone else had explained to the dick the danger he was in, and suggested he make amends.
@@Joe-og6brPlenty of people like that around. I wouldn't have ever crossed my grandfather while he was still mobile, for instance. There were a few rusted out old cars deep in the woods on his property, I never asked how they got there. They weren't his, though, and the property had been in the family since before cars were a thing. Always wondered if they didn't belong to some former attempted horse thieves that experienced early retirement.

Yeah, but he doesn't. He feels like he's making his character look too much like a good guy because it makes the thin line between good and evil a lot wider, like there's a lot of wiggle room. There is nowhere else for Ray's story to go after the last season. The best shows I've ever watched reached a strong conclusion. The good shows that become hard to watch are the ones that don't know where to go, but have the backing of people who want to milk every last penny. I respect that they concluded the show with the smile Ray has before he's about to make somebody regret the stupid decision they've made.
I worked in The Cross. For a "local businessman" and my job was quite legitimate and above board. But most of the other guys who worked for him, not so much. And one of the very first things I, and the other everyday employees learned was, "You are not here to ask questions, c-nt". So I know perfectly well that little opening scene.
I love how effortlessly terrifying Ray can be.
