our country really needs better mental healthcare, instead of drugging everyone up and or sweeping the issue under the rug. At the point that the cops were called, this mans fate was pretty much sealed, but he should have got the help he deserves before any of this could have happened.

What ??? This guy is literally saying that he will kill you and all you idiots start to feel sorry for him . He shouldn’t had attacked her . He got what he wanted
In a mental institution you have the same threats but they are controlled by staff who are prepared for it. This cop wasn’t prepared and that’s not all on her. It’s like when officer Darian Jarrott was killed by that drug dealer when homeland security didn’t warn him that the guy they asked to be stopped was a violent criminal and they knew he had guns on him. Darian’s dispatcher didn’t know those details. In this case w the female cop, she apparently was sent to try and handle this bizarro version of John Correia. What if he had a gun or a knife? She could have died in that first jump. Just reckless for cops to be put in such deadly situations.
Exactly.. At what point in time do they teach them they need Backup before dealing with a violent situation? Being a female was the problem.. A guy would have been able to deal with the strength of another man.. The guy had no weapon, So she could have walked away until backup arrived..
Nah this is a better resolution. That man is a detriment to society and she proved that we don’t need to waste more resources to handle a situation like this. She gave him ample warnings. He made his choice. No one should have a problem with this.
No..she should have called for back up as soon as she got the call. All female officers should have back up. There's no way she could have intimidated this man, her only option at that point was to use deadly force. That left him zero chances of getting the help he really needed.
Yeah and how long would it took them officers to get there if we're freaking lights on the damn line it's easier for me or anybody else to comment on this s*** unless you're in that position
I think it was justified. The dude said he was going to kill her or anyone that messed with him. He refused to follow commands and kept advancing on her and assaulted her. Even bare-handed he was an immediate threat of great bodily harm or death to her or any other officer in that situation. He escalated it and was not going to back down even with a gun pointed at him. She did what she had to do.
Agreed. She's a sworn officer of the law. She cannot retreat in the face of a much bigger menace who's actually saying he's going to kill. And when he resorted to violence against her she had to act. Still, though, she should've given him the hot sauce. AND THEN, if he still kept coming, PAP PAP PAP.
She wasn't able to 4:02 handle him from the outset. She should have called for backup as soon as she saw him. I said this the first time i saw this. Her size and skills made him a deadly threat to her. This wasn't neccessary with a little thought.
Agree with you. She was not able to control this guy without lethal force. Introducing her into the mix made it a worse threat. She had to shoot because he could have taken the gun, but she brought that gun into the situation. Very sad.
I tend to agree with you, this is what can happen when women are sent to deal with men. I'm not one for letting criminals off easy, but that guy could have easily overpowered her, but instead i think he was just trying to provoke her to shoot. Policemen could have arrested him and maybe he could have gotten help. Instead he's dead because of gender qoutas and a lack of backup.
@@307living3 no I disagree. He could easily have beaten her to death. But she did push a bad situation. Once he rang her bell and kept advancing on her she was justified. At least if I were on the jury I couldn't convict.

I showed this to my dad who was in the military and later a police officer, and he said what he would have done as soon as he saw the jacket would be to say, hey man thank you for your service. Even if he wasn’t in the military for real and just got the jacket somewhere, it shows you’re trying to respect him. Then try to have a conversation like, is there anything I can do to help you? I see you’re sleeping here, can I maybe help you find a shelter tonight or something..to show you’re trying to help first and you’re seeing them as a person who deserves respect and help. That may have deescalated the situation some, and then if he were still super abrasive and saying he wanted to kill people etc. you say alright man well be safe out here. Then you drive a little bit away and call backup.

They carry hot sauce, tasers, and pistols. The gun's too much, the taser would've been ineffective because of the heavy clothing. The hot sauce was the most appropriate defense tool under these circumstances.
For real. I RARELY ever make that argument... but she just went straight for her gun in this case and it was a good example of Excessive Force and escalation. She had many options, but this is the path that SHE chose. I just wish people would see that a man's life was taken by government when it was completely unnecessary. (Kinda like when the supreme court ruled that cops cannot Create dangerous situations and then justify killing a person... like a cop cannot jump in front of a fleeing car and then shoot the driver, because they feared being run over). I think the taser would have worked here. The electricity can arc a fair distance... but I think you're right though that this would have been a good situation for pepper spray. I really hope they consider charging her for this and/or at the very least consider their hiring policies. If a cop can't handle a single unarmed man without shooting him, the he/she should not be a cop. I at-least hope his family sues.
It is so heartbreaking that these vets are reduced to sleeping on the streets with untreated PTSD. She should really have waited for back up, she was way over her head.

Unfortunately, most homeless vets choose to stay homeless. We veterans have care available to us for no cost. The problem lies with the individuals not accepting the help.😢
Only a few facing the spear tip of combat in the military. Just because you fixed refrigerators doesn't mean you're a combat vet. It's just a job like most of us have. My point is only a few face combat stress in the services. Why does anyone get a golden ticket for 4 years in the service? Cops, in general, face WAY more stress than your average VET.....fact......
I wonder how much of the hesitation to make strategic withdrawal and call for additional units was because she didn't want "the guys" to think that she couldn't handle a simple homeless/you can't sleep here trespass because of her DNA or stature. I'm not meaning to accuse that she had an attitude of "I'll prove it to them!" just "What will they think when they call for backup and hear that I'm the one coming?" thoughts. I don't have direct experience in that area. If anyone who does wants to dive in, it's most welcome.
This guy probably would not have been phased by a taser. He had some heavy duty psych problems, and pretty hyped on Adrenalin or some controlled substance. He took 2 to the chest and didn't drop for a good 20 seconds.
To coin a phrase I heard on another channel that covers controversial events and did this one too. "Lawful but awful". He Carrie's himself like a vet, some have a death wish. 22 vets a day commit suicide. Personally I think he took the opportunity for suicide by cop. Sad state of affairs.
@@aydinsha obviously hes not if hes trying for suicide by cop. Either way he wasnt in a clear frame of mind. But he was very clear on his intent and ability. And sadly he showed it and received that recompense.
I disagree as well, and I'm not convinced he was a vet, either, as we never wore those PT jackets when not in uniform. Everyone hated them. But we would give them away for a clothing drive. I think he got it for free. Maybe he was a vet, but the only reason anyone thinks he was is that jacket. This guy was totally surprised that he got shot. He didn't think she'd shoot. Look at the surprise on his face when he realizes he's losing hydraulic pressure. I think he successfully bullied mall security, probably made his way by successfully bullying other homeless people. He was used to having a monopoly on violence because he was always the most willing to use it.
@@skipdreadman8765 no, when you've been around vets since childhood including both my father and brother, vets carry themselves differently. It's not the jacket. That's just eye candy.
When I was in the service I found that the least confident and capable leaders were also the least likely to exercise tactical patience and request support when they were in a tight spot. I suppose it was fear of looking incapable or scared or weak. It's a good note for CO's and trainings officers: make it a standard practice to assess the "battlefield calculus" of a situation and request additional support to get that two or three to one ratio over the adversary. If everyone is trained to do it, it takes that pressure off the unconfident ones. That way they'll be following SOP vice looking weak when asking for support. And this is obviously only, like Mike said, if you can back off and request support. Every situation is different. Also no snide comment intended here as this was tremendously sad -- this motivates me to get rid of all my old Army PT uniforms that I am saving for the day they come back in vogue. They won't and there are obviously people in need who will use them so it's time to send them out to the charity organizations where they can do some good.
The "problem with authority" bit from mike is spot on in my opinion and I do think it might have helped to change tactics, he obviously feels disenfranchised in the world he protected. He wants to feel the power to sleep where he wants. He wants to rant and feel appreciated, his demeanor obviously changes when she refuses to listen to him and allow him to sleep where he wants, his brows come down and he is done being talked down to. You can see it at 3 minutes in the video. She met his need for feeling empowered and listened to with authority, dismissiveness and ultimately took the encounter to a combative arena that she wasn't confident in. So she used the force equalizer, but she was responsible for that outcome IMO.
well said and poor guy shouldn't of died in such a horrific way and thank God for people like you that can see it how it is unlike so many people on the comments😭
He's dead, not just because we have a system that backs up any tyranny that anyone wants to enforce on another... but also, because they hired a cop that cannot even handle a single, unarmed man. How is it that you cannot handle a single, unarmed man, but you are a police officer? The odds of this happening the very first time she came across a man larger than her was 100%. If she couldn't handle this man, she couldn't handle ANY man. This man was Barely aggressive.

How about calling for more help, then establishing rapport: “I see that you have an Army jacket, are you a veteran? Thank you, I appreciate your service” (as more units are enroute)…. Good breakdown ASP. I saw this on another channel first, but you're bringing up better take aways. Question though, we find out later he shrugged off one to the chest. No FIBS... So, you still recommend coming out with the OC spray on someone like that?
Communicated lethal intent, was aggressive in nature, didn't follow any commands, was given several warnings....I don't understand how this wasn't justified. I don't mean any disrespect to service members, but just because you're a veteran, I don't believe that justifies any sort of misconduct, and does not afford you any special treatment.
The shooting is arguably justified. No rational mind is saying it isn't. Most of us are saying that this was avoidable and could be handled much better. There is a pretty strong possibility force would be necessary given his mindset yes, but at least by deescalating things there would be enough time for back up to arrive. The force needed would likely not have ended up being deadly. A threat to kill someone can be intimidating but it is not the same as trying to kill someone. I raised 6 tough females, firearm, DT and survival trained. However, none of them could have handled this situation any different than this female cop did. A male officer would not have killed this mental man. I’m speaking from 21 years of experience and as a FTO.
Then you should understand what the female officer did wrong and it was nothing to do with her gender. She did not read the room or bother to listen to the man. In fact, she actively shut him down just to issue commands. The expectation that the situation could escalate is reasonable when the subject already declared he would not comply and threatening violence. This has little to do with male officers vs female officers. It has everything to do with a lack of training and experience when it comes to interacting with the mentally ill. Plenty of male officers we see in videos like this make the same mistakes.
10000% agreed and even raising this topic labels people negatively and it's BS. This is something that needs to be discussed and logic need to prevail. Female officers are not capable of performing at the same and often necessary levels and it puts lives at risk.

Exactly. And I’m all for men and women being treated with the same level of respect and having the same opportunities, but at the end of the day men and women are different. It doesn’t make a woman less capable or less of an officer to need a partner. Women are typically smaller, that’s a biological fact. This man could have probably thrust his entire weight on her before she had time to radio or reach for her gun, and he could have overcome her with size alone and assaulted her and even killed her and there was noooo one around to see or hear. I think maybe all officers should have a partner

He got the cop that drew a gun on an unarmed man and completely just skipped the less-lethal options she had available. Pepper spray most certainly would have been the perfect opportunity here... but she went straight for her gun and she ended the life of an unarmed man. I'm the biggest supporter of the Right of self defense that I've ever known in all of my life... and even I think this was an unjustified shooting. Government just took the life of an unarmed man, because of Pure Incompetence, of hiring a cop that could not handle a single unarmed man. I doubt that there is a single male cop in the entire nation that would have shot this man in this same exact situation (and especially who would not be charged after).

I really think she should have backed out as soon as he started acting aggressive. 2 or 3 officers could have handled this situation much better.
Exactly.. At what point in time do they teach them they need Backup before dealing with a violent situation? Being a female was the problem.. A guy would have been able to deal with the strength of another man.. The guy had no weapon, So she could have walked away until backup arrived..

Another Donut fan. Nice.

He's dead, not just because we have a system that backs up any tyranny that anyone wants to enforce on another... but also, because they hired a cop that cannot even handle a single, unarmed man. I don't think I've ever seen another case of an unarmed "suicide by cop" in my entire life... and that's because if a cop cannot even handle one unarmed man, then he/she should not be a cop in the first place. It could only lead to this happening the very first time an unarmed man advances on her. No a man's life has been taken from him... and I can't believe people are so quick to just discount his life as if it had no value. It's disgusting. This man should not be dead.
i was a female officer back in the day and i was alone, covered a massive area from fairfax city (va) to centreville, to clifton. a huge triangle shaped area, before they added the extra station (years later) and i ran calls alone a LOT. i am 5’8” (was) thin but strong and unafraid. but also, back then, there was a LOT more respect for the police and yes, i even had some say they didnt fight me because i was a woman. those were the good old days for sure. 😊. i treated them right and it was usually a good outcome. if you dont follow police orders and YOUR life is in danger, you shoot if thats what you have at the moment. at this point, its one less “frequent flier” that wont have to take up hours of their time, over and over.
...so not following orders is the death penalty? That's absurd. Also, you can't just go straight for your gun every time and then shoot, just because that's just what happens to be in your hand. Excessive force is Excessive force, manslaughter is manslaughter and murder is murder. You can't just go straight for your gun with an unarmed man and then shoot him the moment he advances on you. If you cannot handle a single unarmed man, then you have no business being a cop. Otherwise, government could just hire female murder squads and start taking out anyone that don't follow orders.

BS. Pepper spray and/or a taser would have taken the fight out of him instantly. Besides that, if she cannot handle a Single Unarmed Man, then she has no business being a cop. @@angelgarlinger6370 No. I'm not an evil, power hungry fool that has a lust for killing unarmed people. Don't gotta be a cop to know right from wrong (or to know the law when it comes to excessive force and government's ability to kill citizens).

My prayers to this officer for dealing with this situation. I thought, under what was presented did a pretty good job. I hope she can come back from this. My prayers, also, to this poor man's family who is obviously facing a lot of complex struggles......

I agree. We all have the benefit of hindsight, and a lot of people like to Monday Morning quarterback what happened. She had no idea it was going to turn out like that- one minute she’s having a conversation asking this gentleman to leave and the next minute she’s fighting for her life. She did okay, she didn’t fire until it became completely obvious that she was truly in danger. By that time she had to make a quick decision and she warned him, then she followed through. Sad of course, but he left her no choice.

Do you know for a fact this guy was a veteran? Anybody can walk into a thrift store and find military type clothing.
@@skysurfer9655he literally said he was. Did you watch the video?
Just because you serve doesn’t mean you own this country. This man got a reality check. Unfortunately it ended his life.
@@Hozay1228 Doesn't mean you own the country, but they may come back with several traumas and may never recover from that mental state, all that for fighting in a war for the country. Compared to other countries, the US gives a total of 0 craps to support the veterans.
@skysurfer9655 its easy to recognize the state of mind. Also the references he makes to serving..
You're lack of experience in the military is showing
In the 80's any cop worthy of the name would call for & await back up. Then thy'd give him the BAD NEWS. If he wanted to fight they'd beat him into submission or unconsciousness with batons or flashlights. Sounds brutal, right? He'd wake up in jail or the hospital. HE'D ALMOST CERTAINLY HAVE LIVED.
No, she could have backed off and waited for back up. This is horrible, all ego
Man of his word, he said he's gonna sleep right there. He did.
Obviously the system failed the man, who I'm thinking is a Veteran, judging by his demeanor and linguistic commonalities to those who have served, and the system failed him again. No wonder he was so willing to give up and take two to the chest, then go lay down and get the rest he wanted from the very beginning. Honestly, the joke is on the dumbass "can I help" rookie cop, because the guy got exactly what he wanted. He just wanted to sleep, and he didn't care if it was permanent, he was going to sleep there outside the mall. He wasn't impeding the movement of anyone or a public eyesore, he was just an inconvenience to some random security officer who likely never served a day in our military or understands the hardships that come with PTSD post-war or the difficulties of survival for Veterans.
This is what i thought. He was over it, had enough and didn't give a fuck.
this is crazy to see for a foreigner... in my eyes this officer should never been on the force. way to nerverse. in my eyes this is murder. no form for de-escalate. glad i dont have to deel with all this just watch from the side lines :) im from Norway btw
If she didn't interject to impose authority and actually listened to him when he asked, then this may have gone differently.
Attempting to establish a rapport by listening to what he had to say and asking him about his life until back up arrived would have at least be a better route. That is assuming you cannot back off without getting attacked.
💯
@@bjchit I can understand what you may be thinking, but I've spent 3 years dealing with cases exactly like this, and experienced good & bad endings.
Given his behavior prior to the cop escalating to commands, there was definitely an ability to still reason with him. Not in the "get up and leave" way, but in lowering the temperature and establishing a rapport way.
There is a pretty strong possibility force would be necessary given his mindset yes, but at least by deescalating things there would be enough time for back up to arrive. The force needed would likely not have ended up being deadly.
A threat to kill someone can be intimidating but it is not the same as trying to kill someone. It's important to observe as much as you can to determine how realistic the threat of immediate harm and death is. Once they go into action made, that's when reasoning typically becomes unavailable.
@@bjchit She resulted to cutting him off after he asked for her to listen to issue commands with a weapon drawn. You think lowering hostility only takes a couple minutes?
There's a reason why we're not acknowledging her half-baked attempt. It's because it's pretty clear cut that more could have been done. If more was actually done and the shooting still happened, then I wouldn't have even posted this.
@@bjchit She's a professional who should be capable of making better judgement calls. She has the equipment and better state of mind in this scenario.
I left out a significant amount of details because the purpose of this comment was to be simple. My bone to pick is entirely with how it was handled prior to the moment of the shooting. I don't know why you're trying to argue that.
I never said the shooting wasn't justified. She did what she had to do, but you do realize he only started punching her once she started issuing commands and shutting down what he had to say correct? It's pretty much clearly cut that she unfortunately put herself in that spot.
*I never once tried to pin blame what happened on her being a woman or defended the dead man based on his jacket.
You know nothing about my views like you seem to think you do. This discussion will go no where should you continue to project your views of what I think rather than just asking me.
Deputy did a great job of protecting herself and others!
The cop did lie saying she went down after being hit by him but she didn't pretty suspect.
I raised 6 tough females, firearm, DT and survival trained. However, none of them could have handled this situation any different than this female cop did. A male officer would not have killed this mental man. I’m speaking from 21 years of experience and as a FTO.
100%. Women should never be cops or put into these situations, period.
How many people have to die until we accept the reality of physical strength.
Pepper spray? Taser? Baton? Straight to pistol? I was a LAPD street cop for 23 years and an FTO for 16. This was not " satisfactory ".

This one still made me sad just like the last time I watched this.. and with that I believe women shouldn’t be patrolling alone and need a partner
What happened to security? They totally disappeared and this officer needed help. This deceased guy brought this on himself! But clearly it would have taken several officers to bring this guy into compliance. Responding officer possibly thought she was going to deal with a frequent flyer and responded alone.
If they were "Armed Security Officers" , then I totally agree they should have came outside and backed her up. If they were UNARMED Security, then they are wise to never get physically involved in a dangerous situation. In many cases they are under contract to only observe and report crimes, but never take any physical action whatsoever. Lots of the "Security" we see on a daily basis are the equivalent of Scare Crows!
Another case of security starting drama and trouble as they usually do if they don't interfere with half of what they do nothing would happen
Yeah, the UNARMED guy committed "suicide by cop". First unarmed suicide by cop ever in history, because he got the one cop that couldn't even handle a single unarmed man.
