The Bajau people of Borneo can hold their breath longer than almost anyone else on the planet. How? Why? And how can the rest of us learn to hold our breath for longer? Rohin from Medlife Crisis explains.
Can’t wait till this video is deleted by Earworm
Thanks for the video, Rohin! I'm going to be mostly away for the next few weeks, but hopefully no-one'll break the channel while I'm gone...
@@TomScottGo Thank you Tom! Enjoy your holiday, you deserve it.
Tom’s channel has been one of my absolute favourites for years so it’s a huge honour to be given this privilege. In these heady days of RUclips drama, Tom not only gave a tiddler like me a platform here but turned out to be even more helpful and supportive than I could’ve imagined. He’s just an all-round good egg. Three cheers for good eggs.

Pffft you mean to tell me there are people that _don't_ have a shrine to Tom Scott?
Other than Tom Scott himself I can't think of anyone that wouldn't
Que gran tipo Tom Scott
wait a shrine was enough? I have started a church around the life of Tom Scott.
(it's a empty room to symbolise Tom his aversion to live with unnecessary stuff and then i removed the room because a empty room has no use. It's just a empty lot next to the road).

My dad's been holding his breath for 4 years now and sometimes we go and stand on the grass above him to offer moral support and encouragement. He's in some sort of tournament with hundreds of others who are all beneath their own little bits of grass, some have been holding their breath for over a century.

pro tip: don't try the ice bath thing if you have any kind of anemia/blood disorder, or else you might pass out from the sudden drop and get water everywhere, a thing that definitely didnt happen to me (pulls at damp collar like a vaudeville comedian)
I guess if you have dysregulation of heart or nervous system and tend to faint because of that, it's also a bad idea.
Does this apply to hemophilia?
Do not do the ice bath alone either
Now I'm just curious what it would do with Wolfe Parkinsons. To my knowledge it's just bio electrical, but I probably should experiment in a safe environment before any cold adventures

Hi I'm from North of Borneo (Sabah). Bajau ethnic is one of 36 Ethnics in Sabah. I'm from Dusun ethnic. Most of people here (mens) who lives near the ocean can sunk underwater and hold breath around 5-10 mins. I myself can hold breath around 7 mins to hunt fish (as shown in the video) . This is possible if you been doing this since you are kid.
I remember as a kid being told that no one could hold their breath for more than 5 minutes, which scared the hell out of me since I repeatedly would hold my breath for more than 5 minutes without any effort so I'd always surface... just in case. I was playing soccer and running cross country at the multi-state competition level though. Also, living in Louisiana so that I've been swimming since a baby.
4:05 I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one with a tasteful Tom Scott shrine.
4:05 is easily the most relatable part of the video... who doesn't keep a mini-shrine for Tom?
Ummmm

As a freediver I love this video! You explain all of these concepts really well, and are thoroughly entertaining throughout the video!

Great choice, Tom! Love hearing from experts like Medlife Crisis. We hope this brings more attention to his delightful channel.
Thank you Kim! You are instrumental to this all happening, I wouldn't have been on the WCE Slack and decided to pitch my idea!

medlife crisis guy: prays to tom scott altar

we had this sciencey news show called Daily Planet here in Canada and I miss it. I didn’t realize how much I did until I started watching Tom and yes, unfortunately it’s an addiction.
So basically the Bajau are on their way to evolving into merpeople
Not if we stop them!
Not just them. Bengali people also have this , albeit slightly behind. Not sure but I think others do too
Call of Cthulhu
And they've made good progress, that dude looked incredibly at home in the water.
It's good to know _someone_ will be able to live on those island nations sinking below sea level in that part of the world.
I've heard of a pirate who could hold his breath for 10 minutes. His name was Guybrush Threepwood.
As a kid, I had a huge crush on Guybrush.
My name is Rowan (pronounced very similarly to Rohin), so I was already slightly shook by the start of the video, as it's rare to find another Rowan/Rohin in media. So when Rohin mentioned Weddell seals (pronounced incredibly similarly to my surname, Woodell) I was sure this was some kind of Truman Show-esque Bandersnatch Matrix situation. Consider me freaked out
He literally has a picture of tom behind him. I love it
I think Tom actually takes December off but he's a month ahead of his videos so we experience the gap a month later... in January! Ok, I'm not exactly a wizard but these sorts of things don't pass over my head unnoticed 😆😆
4:07 More of this. Much, much, more of this, Tom Scott.
Such a thorough explanation. Thank you! I learned a lot from this video. And how cool is it that you do medical tourism, visiting people who have unusually large spleens. :)
Every time Tom takes a break from RUclips, I get to subscribe to some amazing channels. This is fantastic.
If you try hard enough, you can hold your breath for the rest of your life, give it a try!
Fpund you
Never heard of this guy before.
I have to say, this was a thoroughly entertaining video. Great stuff Rohin 👍
In an Anatomy class I did the breathing test. We did several different things like one breath and hold as long as you can, breathe OUT and hold as long as you can, then, finally, hyperventilate and hold. I managed 2.5 minutes after hyperventilating and you could hear the class trying to keep up :-) There was a band around my chest so you could see if I was breathing... thing is... it starts hurting and you want to breathe after about fifteen seconds. After that you're just suffering and smothering for 2 1/4 minutes.
Letting a little air out reduces your suffering slightly so at the end I was exhaling a little and it was almost like taking a breath, each time.
Pro tip:
Never hyperventilate during the breath up, this can cause a black out.
If you let some air out, the pain doesn't feel that immense. Downside is that there's still oxygen in that air so don't waste them particles.
Never hyperventilate when diving, it gets rid of the discomfort that comes with heightened carbon dioxide levels, but you will pass out by the time the discomfort starts happening
in fact, the next stage (getting muscle twitches in the stomach area) signifies only half the time you can stay underwater (unless you've hyperventilated, in which case you will be passed out by the time the twitches come along)
Amateur tip from a highschool swimmer who's been swimming competitively for 8 years. Hyperventilating makes swimming 50 meters with one breath super easy for when you gotta do a 25 second 50 to go to state.

Getting free music to use in your video isn't easy. RUclips provides a large free library where you can search by sound, so you don't have to pay 2k for sound rights

That was a fascinating video, I can hold my breath for 3-4mins. I love water, being underwater is incredibly relaxing for me, I guess it's my favourite habitat. Even do it in the bath... 15 minutes is just insane!
This channel feels like a regular channel but I can choose the subject, love it, always the most interesting stuff!
Overall an interesting video, but I’m most fascinated by the meat packaged in clear packaging on both sides so the purchaser can see the whole cut before purchasing. Absolutely brilliant! I wish it were done this way in the USA (prepackaged cuts of meat sold in grocery stores is usually on a Styrofoam or metal tray with Saran Wrap covering).

I have a favorite, but I've forgotten what it's called. It's the one that goes from your brain, down, around some bone, then back up to you throat. The most unnecessarily long nerve in the human body caused by a quirk of evolution.
Edit: just checked. I apparently got this from one of this guy's other videos. It's the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which loops around the aorta of the heart before going back up to the larynx.
Haven't laughed so hard at a Tom Scott vid for ages, brightened my day! (Not saying Tom Scott can't be funny, it's just not his normal aim...)

It would be really interesting to see if, given a few thousand years of relative isolation, the Bajau would continue to adapt to have longer diving times.
