The Nasa story is not true. He called someone at Nasa and asked about the lenses and bought them. However, there was an internal dispute as to whether the person had the authority to allow them to be sold. Once Kubrick had the lenses he had them taken apart to modify them for cinematic purposes. Once they were in his hands getting them back was not an option.
The NASA lens issue is nowhere near as complicated as Jimmy makes it out to be. NASA partially funded 2001 as a propaganda exercise, so they owed him a favour. Collative learning's vid on the meaning of the monolith is worth watching, if you haven't yet.
