Great reaction! This movie contains one of the scariest monsters in movies… gaslighting. Oh yeah, and the Devil is in it too 😂😂
This might be my favorite "horror" movie of all time along with the Exorcist.
My favorite movie of any genre.
Also mine
My father got to know actor Sidney Blackmer, who played Roman. Blackmer was from my dad’s hometown (Salisbury, NC). He kept a home there and visited from time to time. My dad thought the world of him even though he only knew him briefly. Just a wonderful old school actor. “Rosemary’s Baby” is what he’s remembered for and it came for him late in life. Sidney passed away in 1973. When dad and I were in Spencer a few years ago we visited Blackmer’s old home, long abandoned and boarded up. It was sad but also kind of spooky. The old mansion was going to be torn down in a few months to make room for a bank.
The apartment building in the film is the Dakota where John Lennon lived...and died.
Another great reaction from you both...thanks!
Interesting fact!
The Catholic Exorcists claim Lennon made a pact with Satan which backfired into his early demise. I was never a big fan.
I think the ending of the movie is supposed to make us feel frustrated, because they get away with what they've done. It tells us that not always 'good' prevails over 'bad' And that in itself is a very scary and unsettling thought. Awesome reaction again 😃
You do get to see the continuing story in Look What happened to Rosemary's baby (1976)
@@007beck9 Thank you for the suggestion.
This is one of the creepiest movies to me personally ... cultists always get to me lol. Love your channel, thanks for the vid!
Ruth Gordon won an Oscar for her performance in this film.
Wow, I didn't have this on my bingo card: you doing back-to-back John Cassavettes movies! (as an actor, not as a director) What were the chances?! Ha! Super cool! This is a total favorite, I'm dropping everything to watch this! That you JUST saw John in "The Dirty Dozen" makes me so happy!!!!!! This will be the first reaction I've seen where someone KNOWS who Cassavettes is!
Curiously enough, Cassavettes, Gordon and Evans all guested on Columbo once. Some of the interesting appearances throughout, Sharon Tate is an uncredited party guest and Telly Savalas' brother and Kojak co-star George as a workman.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 .....and of course a young Charles Grodin.
Guy walks into the room with two custard cups; one topped with a raspberry and one topped with a walnut half. Minnie probably told him: "give her the raspberry."
In the book "Rosemary's Baby" the baby looked like a normal, reddish-blond baby but he had these cat-like yellow eyes. He also had small claws, a tail, and buds on his head where the horns are.
Also mittens on his hands and feet I loved that book
This film, and book, is a brilliant thinly veiled allegory for women's rights, do what you're told, women shouldnt read books, etc. 'Guy' is a non-indentity face for the patriarchal monarchy of society. Great movie.
I remember seeing this when it came on tv in the early 70’s. The scene “he has his father’s eyes” scarred my childhood brain & I think I closed my eyes the rest of it. I was around 6yo. If it came on tv the kids got to watch it. I saw quite a few scary movies in early childhood 😮
A few years older but same reaction, I stayed freaked out a lot throughout my childhood, tv had a big influence on my already over imaginative mind, Thanks
Minnie is played by Ruth Gordon. Best remembered as Maude in "Harold & Maude".
The same song is "Fur Elise" by Beethoven. Also scales at the beginning. There was some hardworking pianist in the building, oblivious to the whole business.
Thanks for reacting!!! For the time (1968) this was a very psychologically frightening movie!
You both are just stellar in your thinking and reactions. Always nice to see a sane reactionary critique...the mother/son dynamic has a very organic flow. This film is one of my classic favorites...Farrow and Cassevettes were just in their pre stardom. Mia's frail frame was just perfect for the damsel in distress...the audience was always in her corner. Love the vague ending...leaving the premise open for future films. Thanks for your reactions!!
The twist ending was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments!
Charles Grodin (from "The Heartbreak Kid") played Dr. Hill. Maybe you could watch "The Stepford Wives" also written by Ira Levine.
I read the book as a teenager and from what I can remember Guy had no malicious intentions whatsoever before meeting the Castevets but the promise of money and fame turned him. Guys can I recommend The Stepford Wives (1975) too by the same author Ira Levin? Fantastic movie!
I’ve always wanted to see this. Great reactions. Saved me a job 😂
Yikes somehow it took me a year or so to catch up with this terrific reaction to a marvelous film and a lifelong favorite (being an occult/supernatural horror maven). No excuses. Again, great reaction, very entertaining- sharp observations and welcome humor thanks very much.
Loved your reactions! I was a tween when I first saw this. For the time, it was horribly unnerving.
Roman apparently told Terry about the plan to impregnate her with Satan's spawn, which is why she was given the tannis-filled necklace. Some viewers conclude that, after she learned about her fate, Terry committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of the Bram. Other viewers conclude that Terry was compelled to jump by the witches, citing Rosemary's "dream" the night before, in which Minnie's voice was heard through the wall, telling Roman, "If you'd listened to me, we wouldn't have had to do this!.. I told you not to tell her in advance... I told you she wouldn't be open-minded!"
Minnie and Roman make sure they're alibied, i.e. outside returning home when the body is found. (Otherwise they would have been inside when it occurred -- as the elderly couple seem to have nothing to do outside the Bramford -- and been subjected to scrutiny from the police.) This is the fateful first time the Woodhouses meet the Castevets in person, although they've already heard Minnie caterwauling through the thin walls.
The building was the Dakota where John Lennon was shot in 1980 and where Yoko Ono still lives. In fact, the very last shot of the movie shows the entrance to the courtyard where he was killed. Tragedy came sooner than that, though; right after this movie was the heartbreaking murder of Sharon Tate, her unborn son and her friends. That aside: GREAT REACTION!!!! I hope you eventually hit Polanski's other great American masterpiece, "Chinatown" (1974), with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Cassavettes is pretty hateful in this movie, right?!! Ha! He's fantastic in this movie. Ruth Gordon, Mia....everyone. Great movie.
Dr. Hill was played by a young Charles Grodin. Fur Elise by Beethoven was the song played on the piano that we hear repeatedly in Rosemary's apartment building, why, I don't know. It does sound rather ominous.
Mia Farrow's hair cut was a big thing back in the day because she had very long hair when she was on Payton place soap opera. There was a big uproar with her fans when she cut her hair.✌️❤️
Loved your reaction! You guys are awesome 💕💕💕
Great film and reaction . The film does such an excellent job of making you frustrated .
Was it Charles Grodin playing the doctor? enjoyed your reaction ! Thanks
Yep.
One of the best book to movie screenplay adaptations. The movie ends like the book except the book lets you read Rosemary's thoughts of getting the baby away from the coven and taking it to religious clergy (probably Catholic since that was her upbringing.) The movie ends with the biggest horror punch. My husband Ron & I, when faced with an odd or troublesome situation often quote our favorite line from the book/movie, " This is no dream; this is really happening! " along with that creepy lah-lah-lah-lahlah lullaby.
Masterpiece.
Great horror movie. The remake several years ago was very bloody.
Great direction by Polanski when Rosemary hears the lady talking behind the slightly opened door...makes the viewer lean over to try to see who it is...awesome shot.
23:00 the famous actor Tony Curtis on the line, to deliberately throw Mia Farrow off. She didn’t know …
Another good one is a British Movie with Mia Farrow called See No Evil. All you see of the killer are his BOOTS until the very end amd its Super CREEPY
My favorite movie!
Everything written by Ira Levin is creepy like this. The decision to NOT show the baby was calculated. According to Levin, once you SHOW a monster, once you've given it a face, you've taken away all its mystery. Other great movies by Ira Levin: the original Stepford Wives; Sliver (with Sharon Stone).
This is actually my favorite movie of all time (tied with Psycho). The true horror of the movie IS the ending, the fact that nobody paid for it and Rosemary was sucked into caring for her devil baby. That's the point. Ira Levin, who wrote the book Rosemary's Baby, wrote a sequel like 30 years later called "Son of Rosemary" and this book/movie is a cakewalk by comparison. It is AWFUL. I pretend it doesn't exist.
I think Guy outsmarted himself in this movie. He probably strung Roman along for a private laugh, never once believing that it was for real. And when the other actor went blind, he went Holy Shit! This is for real. Roman had probably warned him that he and Rosemary would both jump out the window like Terri if he should try to back out.
Also, imagine the power Rosemary would get as Queen Mother of Hell On Earth! She could get revenge on anyone. Not even Roman Castavet would be as powsrful or important.
This used to come on late at night when I was high as hell on pills and weed I would always watch it wierd movie I really liked John cassevettes performence as well as Mia Farrow speaking of you should react to some Woddy Allen movies
Love your reactions. Can we get a spoiler alert in the future though? Haven't finished Stranger Things just yet.
I love this reaction! You both are the best
You can watch part 2 Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby. It's not the greatest sequel, but at least it lets you know what happened to her and the baby. Mind you, they didn't get Mia to portrait Rosemary again. Instead they got actress Patty Duke. Ruth Gordon is re-casted as Minnie. Thanx and take care..xx
One of my favorite films and one of the best of the ‘60s. Ruth Gordon won a very well-deserved Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She also gave probably my favorite Oscar speech. Thanks for the great reaction!
Well, mothers love their, ah, um, babies. Looks down, counts his toes.
Love you and your mom great reaction
This is pretty much a perfect horror movie.
New subscriber here. You guys are great!
I remember seeing this movie as a kid. It freaked me out . And yeh I hate those ambiguous endings too. Great movie though. Not a lot of gore but plays with your mind. Thanks guys!
To see Cassavettes as a good guy, checkout ''Whose Life Is It Anyway?'' starring Richard Dreyfuss.
I liked the updated one with Zoe Saldana - still unsettling but good.
Newsflash, there is a prequel coming out this fall!
Anothercreepy mystery-movie by Polanski is "The Ninth Gate" starring Jhonny Depp. Really thoughtprovoking.
Good underrated horror thriller.
Lmao... you guys were sitting there speechless after!! I hated the ending too. Also wish she had stabbed at least somebody, ANYBODY!!!! LOL!
I think I was mostly horrified that one of the old people was Miss Edwards from The Andy Griffith Show. Aunt Beas bestie!! 🤣
I noticed her too! 😂🤣 I’m like dang such a nice lady in the show but in this movie definitely not. 🤣
Oh no, not Aunt Bea’s bestie!! 😯😁
It’s a terrific film. Beautifully constructed with mounting tension to a conclusion you know is just going to be horrible. The exterior of The Dakota apartment building in Manhattan is used (interiors are a set). It’s one of the top five exclusive buildings in Manhattan and the board I’m sure is notoriously picky. Of course they pretend it’s a rental here. The idea that a struggling actor with a single income could afford such an apartment defies credulity. Similar to the idea of the “Friends” apartment. But my God does it make an atmospherically creepy setting to this story. Polanski at the top of his game. And the more I’ve seen it I think Mia deserved a nomination for her acting.
Rosemary had to give birth on June 28, 1966 (6/66).
If Rosemarie did some damage, like stabbing some of them; she would probably end up in jail or in a psychiatric ward for life.
Who would believe her explanaiton on why she committed murder...
Slaved all day over chocolate mousse--give me a break, Guy!
👍
You guys should react to The Burning 1981.
The author wrote a sequel “Son of Rosemary” where the child is now an adult. It’s a good book.
Read Danes Macarbe by Stephen King, he talks about this movie and the book. He explains so much, it’s fascinating.
If I hear my neighbor chanting to the Devil it wont take long for me to make a new back door to this place.END OF STORY
Have you ever seen The Omen?
No, actually, we haven't!
Pregnancy itself is very disturbing to me
Please watch the spaghetti western movie "Once Upon A Time In The West" (1968)
I've always hated the ending of Rosemary's Baby.
Hi watch the omen
Wait until you watch Hereditary.
Why didn’t y’all show the baby at the end? That’s what the whole build up for the film is about. The payoff.
The actor portraying The Devil during the rape scene is Anton Zandor LaVey. Founder of the world-spanning "Church of Satan"
The actor portraying Satan was Clay Tanner. The CoS kept regurgitating that myth to keep up LaVey's mystique.
@@garymoreno8426 Well, they did succeed with me.
As much as I appreciate your reactions. I never cared for this movie. I tried once more but.,just doesn't keep my attention. In my opinion...bad casting.
As an antique book dealer, the most disturbing part of this movie was all the writing and underlining in that witchcraft book.
