- Sometimes, I carefully create smooth transitions between different types of uploads. Other times, we jump from a Spooky Skull Phone one day to 9 Billy Bass the next.
This description requires a little preface, for obvious reasons lol. The first Billy Bass I ever owned was gifted to me by my great uncle when I was still very little, and it sadly didn’t last long. Shortly after that, I found a second one at a yard sale, and that was long gone within a few years too. My third Billy Bass came from the first auction I ever went to, and it came with my first Rock-a-long Santa. Of course, I don’t have the Santa anymore, but as for Billy… you can see him in the little bonus clip I included at the end of this video. He worked great for years, until one day he randomly quit and I tried to fix him. I was obviously really small at the time and didn’t have a clue what I was doing, so from that day on he sat in broken parts. At some point around 2017, I decided to rebuild him and make him remote controlled. I even put a Bluetooth speaker inside, so you could play songs through him while controlling him. As you can see, it didn’t turn out great, but I was still pretty proud of it at the time lol. Now, he stays buried away in my closet. Anyway, on to the rest of the crew-
4th Bass (1st one shown)
Obtained: Auction forever ago
Repairs: Replaced split head gear. I think that was the first time I ever successfully replaced a gear.
I should note that after I purchased that bass, I did not see a single one for sale (irl) anywhere for what seemed like decades. Then suddenly, I found 7 in the last 2 years…
5th Bass (2nd one shown, highest pitch)
Obtained: Flea Market for $15 on November 15th, 2020
Repairs: None, but the fish itself was incredibly dirty. He’s nice and clean now, but still a little faded from his past life.
6th Bass (3rd one shown, lowest pitch)
Obtained: Flea Market on November 15th, 2020. Yep, the same flea market as the previous fish. It actually wasn’t out for sale yet, I spotted it in a vendor’s car and they sold it to me for $5 lol.
Repairs: Replaced all 3 gears and all the battery contacts, and also fixed the button
7th Bass (4th one shown, August 2000 version with L-shaped circuit board & blue mech)
Obtained: Vendor Mall for $7 on February 26th, 2021
Repairs: Replaced head gear, cleaned both the fish and the battery contacts
8th Bass (5th one shown, and my personal favorite)
Obtained: Goodwill for $5 on August 19th, 2021
Repairs: Replaced all 3 gears
9th Bass (6th one shown, fast tail version)
Obtained: Facebook Marketplace for $2 total during a free shipping promotion on December 14, 2021.
Repairs: Replaced gears for the mouth and tail, as well as the speaker. I owned it for months before I got around to fixing it, so I had no idea it was a fast tail model lol.
10th Bass (7th one shown)
Obtained: Antique store for $3 on March 25th, 2022
Repairs: Replaced the tail motor, fixed the button, and gave him a good cleaning.
11th Bass (8th one shown)
Obtained: Yard sale for $3 on June 18th, 2022
Repairs: None, but it was extremely dirty and covered in multicolored fish tank rocks for some reason
Don’t ask me how I keep all that straight, because I don’t know.
Billy may be the most common Gemmy item of all time, but you have to admit he really is one of the best. As always, thanks for checking out the video! Hope you enjoyed! Let me know what you think in the comments, and I’ll see you again soon!
Please note I do not own the rights to any songs, characters, etc shown in the video. All rights go to their respective owners.
I do quite enjoy the remote controlled Bluetooth Billy Bass. I just enjoy when animatronics are controlled to sing songs that they weren't intended to sing.
I’ve owned a total of 7 of these and I’ve only kept one lol, but needless to say you can thank these guys for years of innovation from Gemmy.
That’s cool! If I had any self control, I’d only have one too lol.
And yep, it’s hard to imagine what the animatronic business would’ve looked like if not for the success of these.
@@toylover1793 The 4th fish was imported from Canada It would have a blue sunstar Box
Whoa that's a heck load of big mouth billy basses he's got a family/school of bass I have mine I brought him from Goodwill back in August 2017 about 4 years ago mine is a 1999 model.
You said you got it in 2018
I’ve seen only a few but if I start seeing more at thrift stores I’m picking every single one of them up!
That’s exactly what I started doing… and now I regret my decisions 😂
I don't think I've ever seen a Big Mouth Billy Bass at a thrift store or anything before, but I do remember the time I found a Big Mouth Larry Lobster and a Travis Trout.
Wow, that’s cool! And also very strange, considering how much more common Billy is compared to Larry and Travis.
@@toylover1793 Wow… a bunch of Billy Basses…
I do have a few singing fish as well as Billy. Also in my opinion, that remote controlled fish is very great.
Thanks! Also, that’s really cool! What other fish do you have?
Well, it’s kind of a long story. I’m very glad you asked, though. I used to have five Big Mouth Billy Bass, but when I tried restoring my first one, it was a fail. I initially thought of taking out the screws from the little piece that holds the head motor because it wasn’t working properly, but the screws were too tight and I screwed it up someplace else. A bunch of wires kept coming off and now all that’s left of it is a plaque, a broken nameplate, and whatever else I have left laying around. I still have my second one fully working, and my dad found for me a third one which I tried restoring its head once again. My fourth one I also tried restoring and still no luck. My fifth one was fully working, but I got mad so I bent the mouth, the tail, and the head all the way backwards and they broke. I regret it so I’m trying to fix this, but I’ve been putting it off for a while. Now that I have more knowledge and experience, because I was A bit younger when I was fixing those fish, I know what to do exactly and hopefully I’ll be able to fix them. Some wires came off some places when I was fixing the fish. Also the gears were completely fine, and I don’t know why the head still wasn’t moving when everything else was fine. Maybe I should grease the mechanism or spin the motor to help it next time. I also have a Tommy Trout that sings Joy to the World, and got it fully working. The head didn’t move but I fixed nothing in that simple mechanism because it was just locked up. Now it works perfectly. Sorry about the long comment lol, just thought you’d be interested in Reading this, since you asked.
Its been about 3 years since ive seen a billy at a flea market. Maybe i'll start seeing more all of a sudden like you did
Maybe! If that does happen, I have one word of advice… don’t buy them all lol!
@@toylover1793 i'd at least get one, my original is at my cousin's (along with a 2nd one from a facebook listing where i got jaws, catfish, and travis)
I used to have like 20 of these but my mom threw them away because she hated them lol
ah yes.
Ah yes.
AH YES! LE FISH¡
10:51 "Big *Large* Mouth Billy Bass" lol
I'm getting a feeling the fast tail Billy was actually made the earliest of the 9 you own.
I’m no expert on singing fish, but I think it’s actually one of the latest models I own.
Around 10:09, I compare the fast tail Billy’s box to a normal box. Notice the date of manufacture printed on the fast tail Billy’s box is January 15th, 2000. Also, the fast tail Billy’s item number is one number up from the normal Billy.
At 10:45, you can also see that the front of the fast tail model’s box says “This realistically detailed Big Mouth Billy Bass looks ordinary enough”, while the normal version’s box says “This realistically detailed Big Large Mouth Billy Bass looks ordinary enough.”
I believe when Billy gained an incredible amount of attention when he first debuted, Gemmy started hiring other factories to produce fish to meet the demand. Hence the different programming on the fast tail model, and all the other weird variations of Billy. I’m not positive though, it’s really a mystery.
@@toylover1793 Valid point. I always thought the fast tail one was manufactured earliest for the fact that you can't turn it off while it's playing the song by button activation, and the shut-off signal sounds very much like what I've heard in some Gemmy items that were made as early as '98 (though you may not know who any of those are. I'm too exhausted to explain lol), so yeah, that's pretty much it.
I can't believe you found a 1 gen
10:58 Big Mouth Bucky Bass.
Dang you have a lot lol
Very nice description. Keep it up! Just out of curiosity, didn’t you try to sell some of your fish or are you keeping all of them? Just wondering. I would keep that many fish LOL!
Thanks for reading! And yes lol, I do plan on selling at least 4 of them at some point. As much as I’d like to keep them, I don’t have the room for so many.
10:59 what rc car did you use for this
Lol so you found 2 Billy Bass' at the same flea market on the same day?
Yep lol! Within just a couple minutes.
What happened to the first 3?
Are you selling one of these
I’m not selling any at the moment, sorry. I will let you know if I do.
