Back then, vocal groups were already rare and their producer was trying to create something different in Kpop, especially for a girl group. They weren't chosen for their looks, they were exclusively chosen for their singing abilities, and their company wasn't yet an idols' company, it was a musicians' company. This kind of music wasn't designed to appeal to international fans at all, especially in 2014, when people listened to something completely different. But it surely appealed to the local public, and not only Kpop fans, but general listeners of all generations. In just a year, Mamamoo became acclaimed by their peers but also senior singers who have nothing to do with the idol industry. They even won the "Rookie of the Year" title, meaning people considered them the best new female artists of the year. Mamamoo's "pop turn" is from 2017, when they released their EP Purple. Their producer wanted to first build their reputation strongly in South Korea, to make sure they'll always have the public support. If you ask me, I'd say Korean people prefer Mamamoo's music to Blackpink's music, or, at least, a wider range of people does (aka, not just teens or people in their early 20s). But what really launched their international popularity was their long 2018 project: 4 Seasons 4 Colours, where their sound became more mainstream, aka more in the likes of international Kpop listeners. Before BP, there was a worldwide famous girl group in YG called 2ne1. They were the biggest girl group in the industry, and every Kpop listener knew about them. When YG disbanded 2ne1 and decided to debut BP, they advertised BP as more or less "the new 2ne1". BP members had also been seen, even before debuting, in music videos related to Big Bang, who was the biggest boy group in the industry before BTS became really famous and trendy, and who had a huge audience. Big Bang also "belonged" to YG. YG did a lot of promo for Blackpink too, because more money involves more mediaplay and more opportunities. So when BP debuted, they were already famous in the world. They had famous choreographers helping out, and YG was and still is a member of "the big 3" (the biggest entertainment companies in SK). So, naturally, they attracted people's attention, because in Kpop, some fans tend to support companies as families. e.g.: if they're really fan of one group in a company, they'll be more likely to support the other groups of said company, or at least, to give a try to their music. When Mamamoo debuted, they had 5 fans, (literally, at their 1st street session - because, yes, Mamamoo used to busk - they had 5 people attending). See the difference? ^^ Now, there are other parameters, related to the way international fans perceive Mamamoo. Views that often involve a lot of misinformation and distorsion of facts regarding the group on social media like twt. But to me, the main reason why it is this way is just that Mamamoo was never designed to be a typical idol group. As I said, their producer wanted to experiment. They did the same a year later with their first boygroup Vromance. Outstanding vocals, and similar to Mamamoo in concept... but it didn't work, because that's not what people look for when they listen to boygroups, somehow. RBW is a company that first wanted to produce artists, not idols. The girls are all involved in their music's production, their dance production, etc., and that's actually really not typical of this industry. Back in the days, we, their fans, were even their main stylists for some events lol It really isn't your typical Kpop group. So this inbetween status makes it sometimes complicated for them to burst that local bubble. But, one could say that that local bubble is what matters the most. Idol groups come and go every 10 years or so... with their reputation of singers, Mamamoo members might have a chance to keep releasing music for a long time :)

To answer your question, I've been a kpop fan for almost a decade and I could say there is a monopoly in the market where those in the big 3 companies always get the spotlight, the trending articles, the endorsement with minimal efforts from the groups themselves because their companies have contracts with the media, reporters and even investor such as car dealers and high end fashion companies. This is the privilege of being in one of these companies. An example YGE had contracts with Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Chanel as well as Koreas biggest search engine Naver that made sure every positive article related to their artists was on the trending page and sometimes even inflated their results to make it seem they're bigger than they are (what they call media-play). This makes it possible for more people to be introduced to the group and be curious about them which would lead to more fans. On the other hand those in smaller and lesser known companies such as Mamamoo (their company was unknown before they debut) not only do they have to work extra hard to get their name out there they always get treated terribly by the media and shows. They were always pushed to the back while big 3 groups would always be front and center they also get edited out of shows, their performance time also gets cut short. Anyone who watched Queendom would have thought Mamamoo are winners based on their powerful, live and creative performances, but because of how common for them to be treated unfairly they didn't even expect to win the show.
It is just sad that knowing mamamoo struggle a lot during their debut time. Thank god korean recognize talent when mamamoo consistently performed at Immortal Songs 2 and makes them one of the biggest 3rd gen girl group alongside the big 3.

There is a group of Korean Mamamoo fans always actively working to clear the naver searches for each member (especially Solar, Moonbyul, and WheeIn) all the time because of the disgusting things that automatically come up with their name. What I absolutely loved about this performance was the audience interaction, it was SO powerful and the perfect way to end Queendom Queendom was meant to be a war between girl groups but from the start Mamamoo made it clear it's not what it's gonna be about and set it on a path of peace and friendship; they ended it the same way: "Queendom everybody!" and everyone is singing along together... so emotional Also the ending pose is so beautiful 😭
Mamamoo does have more content, they're always releasing albums and solo projects in which they actively participate in (writing, composing etc). They're not more well known because they're from an agency that's unfortunately less famous, with less money and with less commercial strategy compared to bp.
Also, I love that Destiny is in the same album as HIP, because they mentioned that they are destined to meet, even if MAMAMOO is not MAMAMOO, and if they are in different universes, they will still meet, because it is their destiny. 💛❤️💙🤍
you're absolutely right in terms of each member sharing the spotlight equally in this group. one of the things i find amazing about mamamoo is that they are able to bring together 4 such distinct individuals together in harmony. even just listening to their voices they are very different from each other & yet they harmonize so well together. their teamwork is exceptional but they also shine individually. one of the main reasons mamamoo is not as well known internationally is management. in kpop the big 3 labels are SM, YG, & JYP most of the biggest groups are from one of these 3 labels. the exception to this has been bts whos label was able to use the advantages of social media to the fullest. Groups from the big 3 already have a fanbase pre-debut before they even release any music & so when they do debut they are already in the spotlight, have a following, & quickly amass millions of views upon releasing their first mv. Bigger budgets from the get-go, better PR, connections to the broadcasting stations, etc. On the other hand mamamoo debuted with no following & started from 0 fans. im extremely proud of their journey & growth into a top-tier group & thank you for your continued reactions & appreciation of mamamoo :)

Some possible reasons I could think of why mamamoo isn't as famous internationally: 1) smaller agency 2) no english speaker in the group Also blackpink is very hyped internationally in comparison to other groups that are extremely famous in Korea. General sentiment that I got is that Twice is the most popular in Korea...

Mamamoo is more active on TV and released more songs than Black Pink on the last months, that's why we hear about them more. And yes, their performances and vocal techniques are really something else and we, their fans, also can't understand why the world didn't notice them yet. Maybe it's because of their company's incompetence on promoting them, I bet they still haven't noticed how western ppl love them. RBW is still too focused on the Korean public but I hope this comeback will open a new window for Mamamoo.

RBW's most successful artists are Mamamoo. They are a very small company, much smaller compared to Blackpink's YG. Plus, YG already has Bigbang and 2ne1 (+ Winner and iKon) who were already big, so anybody that debuts in YG will be popular. Mamamoo is very lucky to be in RBW, because the CEO lets them do whatever they want and lets them participate/contribute as much as possible. Mamamoo is able to express their art and call their songs/projects a "collab" with their producers and CEO. That isn't something that many groups have. Been waiting for this! I'm surprised Dana didn't comment as much on their fabulous outfits! You must have been so blown away, lol. I'm so happy they will get a grand comeback show as a result of Queendom. Congratulations to our well deserving ladies! Their new full album is coming out Nov. 14th next week! I also like Blackpink, for a different reason. On international popularity, there's Blackpink's company having more money to promote them globally, they're a lot more comfortable speaking English, which helps a lot, they show a lot more girly and cutesy personalities, they emphasize dance more (which is why Kpop is so popular to begin with). But yes, Mamamoo is a lot more musically prolific - they are the first (at least for girl groups) to produce 4 albums in one year (4 season 4 colors) on top of the others. Also, they get invited a lot to sing on Immortal Songs and many festivals as well as highly sought after for soundtracks.

Yes, RWB gives Mamamoo` girls a lot of artistic freedom, as for k-pop conditions. So much that I personally don't include Mamamoo as a k-pop. This is a completely different music, sound and entertainment level. But RWB is a tiny company that lacks funds for promotion and lacks connections in media. That is why Mamamoo have to work so hard (continuous performances wherever possible, leading even to overwork) and compete in competitions such as Queendom, which honestly, should be rather intended for debutants, or trying big comebacks (Park Bom, AOA). But this is the probably the only way to bypass the shortcomings of RWB that I mentioned. In a nutshell, YG would definitely make "Destiny" a global megahit, but Blackpink has not yet recorded the full album, and the way YG treated Blackpink's big sisters, i.e. 2ne1, and especially their leader, CL, proves that cooperation with the biggest and the richest can be a temptation worth to resist sometimes.

I highly recommend everyone after this reaction to watch the Full cam version and in particular the (G)I-dle final performances on Mnet channel. Mnet zooms way too much during the this version that you don't appreciate how the stage is suppose to look and how hard the back up dancers work.

Even in queendom mamamoo, oh my girl and park bom are the only ones from a small company. You'll notice their production level on stage was low compare to that of g-idle but that didn't stop them from shining

Black pink come from a big company YG which is one of the Big3 therefore they already had a big following before they even debuted, not saying that these girls aren't talented but they had major factors helpng them out to gain their massive popularity. Mamamoo's case is completely different, they come from a tiny/almost broke company and had to build up their reputation and their fandom from the ground. They used to go sing in the streets, in malls, music festivals(They actually participated in over 200 festival during their first year)...in order to introduce themelves to the public because their company didn't have the money or connections to promote them right

mamamoo started on a a very small company (that thanks to them has grown now) while blackpink came from the biggest company in kpop, yg entertainment. since kpop is an industry, this is a big factor on popularity. blackpink is mainstream and it was mainstream since the very beggining, while mamamoo has grown in a more organic pace. that's why i love them, they fought for their space and all they have right now was accomplished through hard work, talent and their charisma.
and i'm not saying that the girls in blackpink are not talented, but the group itself is a product. we all know that they have no saying on their music or their concepts, while mamamoo always participate on every aspect of their art.

So, naturally, they attracted people's attention, because in Kpop, some fans tend to support companies as families. e.g.: if they're really fan of one group in a company, they'll be more likely to support the other groups of said company, or at least, to give a try to their music.
When Mamamoo debuted, they had 5 fans, (literally, at their 1st street session - because, yes, Mamamoo used to busk - they had 5 people attending). See the difference? ^^
Now, there are other parameters, related to the way international fans perceive Mamamoo. Views that often involve a lot of misinformation and distorsion of facts regarding the group on social media like twt.
But to me, the main reason why it is this way is just that Mamamoo was never designed to be a typical idol group. As I said, their producer wanted to experiment. They did the same a year later with their first boygroup Vromance. Outstanding vocals, and similar to Mamamoo in concept... but it didn't work, because that's not what people look for when they listen to boygroups, somehow. RBW is a company that first wanted to produce artists, not idols. The girls are all involved in their music's production, their dance production, etc., and that's actually really not typical of this industry. Back in the days, we, their fans, were even their main stylists for some events lol
It really isn't your typical Kpop group. So this inbetween status makes it sometimes complicated for them to burst that local bubble. But, one could say that that local bubble is what matters the most. Idol groups come and go every 10 years or so... with their reputation of singers, Mamamoo members might have a chance to keep releasing music for a long time :)

To answer your question, I've been a kpop fan for almost a decade and I could say there is a monopoly in the market where those in the big 3 companies always get the spotlight, the trending articles, the endorsement with minimal efforts from the groups themselves because their companies have contracts with the media, reporters and even investor such as car dealers and high end fashion companies. This is the privilege of being in one of these companies. An example YGE had contracts with Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Chanel as well as Koreas biggest search engine Naver that made sure every positive article related to their artists was on the trending page and sometimes even inflated their results to make it seem they're bigger than they are (what they call media-play). This makes it possible for more people to be introduced to the group and be curious about them which would lead to more fans.
On the other hand those in smaller and lesser known companies such as Mamamoo (their company was unknown before they debut) not only do they have to work extra hard to get their name out there they always get treated terribly by the media and shows. They were always pushed to the back while big 3 groups would always be front and center they also get edited out of shows, their performance time also gets cut short. Anyone who watched Queendom would have thought Mamamoo are winners based on their powerful, live and creative performances, but because of how common for them to be treated unfairly they didn't even expect to win the show.
This has been true, but recently Mamamoo has been treated much better by shows and the media. Pure talent is winning out in the end. Thankfully.

It is just sad that knowing mamamoo struggle a lot during their debut time. Thank god korean recognize talent when mamamoo consistently performed at Immortal Songs 2 and makes them one of the biggest 3rd gen girl group alongside the big 3.

There is a group of Korean Mamamoo fans always actively working to clear the naver searches for each member (especially Solar, Moonbyul, and WheeIn) all the time because of the disgusting things that automatically come up with their name. How many useless “scandals” have Mamamoo had in the past year that come out of nowhere when Big 3 artists get bad raps for having nasty attitudes? Mamamoo still get their fair share of poor treatment from Korean media and their company does nothing to help them.

The reason why Mamamoo is not known as much internationally is because these girls didn’t come from big entertainment companies, unlike Blackpink. They have received a lot of unfair treatments in their early years as artists. They had to slowly make their way up (even performing in the streets when they were starting). The fans have a bigger role in promoting them than their own company. Like how you discovered them right? It's by Moomoos recommendation ;)
Totally agreed they remind me so much of bts in a good way they were also mistreated in past but you know hardwork and talent always bring success to those who deserve it even tho it's late still worth the wait...Mamamoo has also started to get more recognition internationally that they deserve! It's just the start sooner they'll be on top too.💜

What I absolutely loved about this performance was the audience interaction, it was SO powerful and the perfect way to end Queendom
Queendom was meant to be a war between girl groups but from the start Mamamoo made it clear it's not what it's gonna be about and set it on a path of peace and friendship; they ended it the same way: "Queendom everybody!" and everyone is singing along together... so emotional

Mamamoo does have more content, they're always releasing albums and solo projects in which they actively participate in (writing, composing etc). They're not more well known because they're from an agency that's unfortunately less famous, with less money and with less commercial strategy compared to bp.

you're absolutely right in terms of each member sharing the spotlight equally in this group. one of the things i find amazing about mamamoo is that they are able to bring together 4 such distinct individuals together in harmony. even just listening to their voices they are very different from each other & yet they harmonize so well together. their teamwork is exceptional but they also shine individually.
one of the main reasons mamamoo is not as well known internationally is management. in kpop the big 3 labels are SM, YG, & JYP most of the biggest groups are from one of these 3 labels. the exception to this has been bts whos label was able to use the advantages of social media to the fullest. Groups from the big 3 already have a fanbase pre-debut before they even release any music & so when they do debut they are already in the spotlight, have a following, & quickly amass millions of views upon releasing their first mv. Bigger budgets from the get-go, better PR, connections to the broadcasting stations, etc. On the other hand mamamoo debuted with no following & started from 0 fans. im extremely proud of their journey & growth into a top-tier group & thank you for your continued reactions & appreciation of mamamoo :)

Some possible reasons I could think of why mamamoo isn't as famous internationally:
1) smaller agency
2) no english speaker in the group

Mamamoo is more active on TV and released more songs than Black Pink on the last months, that's why we hear about them more. And yes, their performances and vocal techniques are really something else and we, their fans, also can't understand why the world didn't notice them yet. Maybe it's because of their company's incompetence on promoting them, I bet they still haven't noticed how western ppl love them. RBW is still too focused on the Korean public but I hope this comeback will open a new window for Mamamoo.

RBW's most successful artists are Mamamoo. They are a very small company, much smaller compared to Blackpink's YG. Plus, YG already has Bigbang and 2ne1 (+ Winner and iKon) who were already big, so anybody that debuts in YG will be popular.
Mamamoo is very lucky to be in RBW, because the CEO lets them do whatever they want and lets them participate/contribute as much as possible. Mamamoo is able to express their art and call their songs/projects a "collab" with their producers and CEO. That isn't something that many groups have.

I also like Blackpink, for a different reason. On international popularity, there's Blackpink's company having more money to promote them globally, they're a lot more comfortable speaking English, which helps a lot, they show a lot more girly and cutesy personalities, they emphasize dance more (which is why Kpop is so popular to begin with). But yes, Mamamoo is a lot more musically prolific - they are the first (at least for girl groups) to produce 4 albums in one year (4 season 4 colors) on top of the others. Also, they get invited a lot to sing on Immortal Songs and many festivals as well as highly sought after for soundtracks.

Yes, RWB gives Mamamoo` girls a lot of artistic freedom, as for k-pop conditions. So much that I personally don't include Mamamoo as a k-pop. This is a completely different music, sound and entertainment level. But RWB is a tiny company that lacks funds for promotion and lacks connections in media. That is why Mamamoo have to work so hard (continuous performances wherever possible, leading even to overwork) and compete in competitions such as Queendom, which honestly, should be rather intended for debutants, or trying big comebacks (Park Bom, AOA). But this is the probably the only way to bypass the shortcomings of RWB that I mentioned. In a nutshell, YG would definitely make "Destiny" a global megahit, but Blackpink has not yet recorded the full album, and the way YG treated Blackpink's big sisters, i.e. 2ne1, and especially their leader, CL, proves that cooperation with the biggest and the richest can be a temptation worth to resist sometimes.

Those companies are SMEntertainment, JYPentertainment and YGEntertaniment. Any group from one of these companies will be inmediatly popular in korea and internatinally.
Blackpink is from YGE, so it was easier for them to get popular everywhere.
While mamamoo is from a small company, mamamoo is their first debut group even... RBW (rainbow bridge world). This company was more oriented to vocals and artistics, that's why mamamoo are the best groups vocally speaking.
Even thought they came from a small company and are the fisrt groups debuted from there they have become really popular in korea, they are known by everyone in there, from kids to old people, they arent like idols groups who are hardly reconnized from the general public and just by their fans.
They have gained their popularity just by their hard work, performance and talents. people know they are real artist and singers and not just idols.

Black pink come from a big company YG which is one of the Big3 therefore they already had a big following before they even debuted, not saying that these girls aren't talented but they had major factors helpng them out to gain their massive popularity.
Mamamoo's case is completely different, they come from a tiny/almost broke company and had to build up their reputation and their fandom from the ground. They used to go sing in the streets, in malls, music festivals(They actually participated in over 200 festival during their first year)...in order to introduce themelves to the public because their company didn't have the money or connections to promote them right

mamamoo started on a a very small company (that thanks to them has grown now) while blackpink came from the biggest company in kpop, yg entertainment. since kpop is an industry, this is a big factor on popularity. blackpink is mainstream and it was mainstream since the very beggining, while mamamoo has grown in a more organic pace. that's why i love them, they fought for their space and all they have right now was accomplished through hard work, talent and their charisma.
and i'm not saying that the girls in blackpink are not talented, but the group itself is a product. we all know that they have no saying on their music or their concepts, while mamamoo always participate on every aspect of their art.
