This was fantastic! I would love to see a follow-up episode where he takes you through: 0. Asking you what item you actually want or helping you decide on one for your build 1. Buying the correct base 2. Looking at poe tw for modifiers and picking them out 3. Assessing what your best crafting route is via Craft of Exile 4. Crafting the item That would be absolutely a treat to watch. I just went through that with my friends who are starting the game and while they thought it was a bit overwhelming, the fact that they ended up with a USABLE item at the end made them very fulfilled. That, to me, is what makes poe crafting great.
Agree! PoE is so deep that this video just scratches the surface. Once you know the basics your brain starts working around all the possibilities and seeing how godly items actually came to be made step by step. Then every new mechanic you learn such as beast crafting, harvest, betrayal etc adds more and more possibilities. It's a *lot* to catch up on after the fact, most players only had to learn one new mechanic every 4 months when it came with a league. By the time something new came along, the last league was old hat.
im super lazy so i went on poe trade to buy a +1 all minion shield but they where 40c I know I held onto a shield, it was ilvl 61 so I was in luck (60 is required) took like 40 alts and bam, rolled +1 and got another spectre (lvl 25 gem)
Your avatar looks different in this video. Did you have someone animate it in Unreal Engine? Looks almost like a real person! Jokes aside, i've been looking forward to this video, i am excited to see you get deep into crafting!
I honestly wasn't expecting to watch this whole video, I thought I'd get bored since I'm familiar with most aspects of crafting, but it was so fun seeing the systems reveal themselves to you! Big props to Subtractem for giving a really good primer, he covered all the crafting tools you're most likely to use and explained the Why of why things are expensive in the economy.
@@stealthstyle1 Honestly the best tip I can give is learning to live with an item that's just fine, instead of perfect/amazing. Getting 2-3 important mods on an item is going to cost you about 1% of the currency needed to get the 5 perfect mods you want, and it will get you 90% of the way there in most builds. Particularly for leveling and the campaign, the vendor recipes to make magic weapons with %phys damage or %spell damage, when combined with crafted flat damage, will speed you through all the way to maps really easily if you keep an eye out for the new bases that become available as you level and use the vendor recipe/craft to give them basic combat stats. With your basic weapon solved you can focus on survivability and resistances on the rest of your gear to have a really smooth levelling experience. All of the above can be done with just a handful of alteration orbs and alchemy orbs, personally if I'm considering investing more into an item than just throwing an essence on it I plan out what I want to make and how I plan to make it, there are dozens of ways to increase your odds of getting what you want (a little, at least) and it all shifts and changes from item to item. Also never be afraid to ask someone for help! There are forums, discord groups, and even a lot of streamers will explain a certain thing or help you figure out a crafting method, sure if you spend a few days learning craft of exile inside and out you could figure it all out yourself, but why bother when there are so many helpful folks in the community who have already done the work?
I loved the way you could tell by Nyx' facial expression that it suddenly clicked and he understood that exact step Subtractem was showing him! ~Kerzahd
To the question 'What should beginners take away from this to help them in the campain' I would say that the most important thing is this. Whe you sense that your build is having problems in damage or resistances. Thanks to the knowledge in this video. you can recognise which of your item is not keeping up with your build (damage or resists). Grab a good BASE(ilvl+sockets) from the vendor in town and throw an essence on it to garanty a rare item.then take your 3-5 mod item to your crafting bench and add life-resists-atkspeed. Getting Literrate with basic crafting like this and being able to fix your problems with what you have on hand is the most empowering/encouraging feeling in the game.
As a beginner, I have tried to watch a lot of crafting videos to try and grasp an understanding of crafting in PoE. This is the only video I have watched that I have not felt overwhelmed by. Thanks @Nyxvellum and @subtractem for making this video! Seriously, helped out a lot.
This Video ist so much better than any other Crafting Tutorial out there. i Think it is because Subtractem has to Explain it in the most simple terms to someone that has pretty much no knowledge of crafting and you can also ask questions right away. Sometimes they seem "dumb" but these are the Questions that really does make a difference.
Wow, honestly as a new player this kind of format is so incredibly helpful! An expert plus a more inexperienced person really lead to questions and answers that may seem trivial for experts, but is crucial basic information that's often missed or brushed over in other guides imo.
What a damn good video! Subtractem is an awesome person, and a gem of the community. Thank you so much for doing this, and glad you're so involved with PoE now :)
8:50 maw wide open mind blown, that makes sense! never saw it before, now it can't be unseen! thanks Nyx & Subtractem, and that's just the start of it :D cheers \o/
I picked up the game 6months ago and omg lol, huge challenge in trying to figure it all out. I stayed away from crafting because its completely alien too me, but this was exactly what i needed to see. This video has helped me alot on understanding more about what i'm doing in crafting so thanks guys appreciate that 👍🏻
I've watched this twice over the last 3 months, it's in my gaming file because I KNOW I'm going to have to watch multiple times in the future. Love it.
Good content to grasp the basics. But there are even more tools available in game to make crafting less RNG involved. Hope there will soon be another episode covering harvest crafting/ fossil crafting/ beast crafting/ eldritch crafting!
Ah yes, I remember watching subtractems crafting guide many many times. One of those watch for 5 mins go figure it out. Come back 20min later to watch another 5min, then have to rewind because you missed something. Rinse repeat.
Love this format. This was so much easier to learn from than just being talked at for half an hour. Like the step by step guide of having you do all these things and watching how it changed the items. Beautiful. Not sure which of you had this idea, but God damn was it brilliant.
This was a great video and very informative even to a veteran like me. and i love how u are getting along with all the other PoE creators, u can learn alot from each other and its just very fun to see u guys hang out.
This is why i play ssf since 3.15. Its a different game from trade (KEKW) league. Nice to see u learning more and more with one of the best. Huge fan from brazil.
I’ve played Poe for over 1500 hours, and this video even helped me feel more comfortable crafting! I at least knew what the orbs did and everything, but I never was successful at making anything useful. Quite literally just learned about why fractured items are useful lmao, like he said some people don’t craft at all and still enjoy the game. You’re miles above where I was when I was at your level
This video is filmed in such a helpful way since your questions help keep the info at an easily digestible speed and were frequently exactly what i was wondering as the explanations were coming. Thanks so much for this great tutorial on getting started in the intimidating world of crafting in poe.
I've watched at least ten tutorials on the matter. You're the most coherent, well explained, good understandable speech manner I've found. Thanks a bunch!
Play through the campaign and just make you're own build and craft you're own gear without buying anything, it's the best way to learn and if you mess up just use you're saved chaos to buy a respec and follow a guide, then at lest you will learn each league and can still go into a good build if you fail.
It's honestly refreshing to hear subtractem explain the very basics to you! I didn't realize when i started the video how new to crafting you are, so it was fun to watch you discover everything in real time, and you asked some really great questions as well!
Holy hell, that's not Nyx. Nyx is a cute little marshmallow with horns. But for real, awesome to see you set up the face cam. You enjoying the new league?
this was such an easy to understand intro to crafting! i tried playing poe 3 years ago but when i first tried crafting back then it intimidated me too much that i ended up quitting for a while. im just picking the game back up again and i was determined to demystify crafting this time around. you asked great questions and subtractem is a fantasitc teacher! thank you both for making this video
I have had this in my 'watch later' list for a little while and im so happy to finally watch it through! I really hope we get another episode where Nyx gets to learn about meta crafting. It's an area I havent really touched on so would be awesome to learn alongside!
Wow this is literally the greatest crafting video I ever seen for Poe. Best part is I actually can understand you guys. I’m a Brand New PoE player and loving this game! Thanks again for the content.
Best crafting guide i have seen. It does such a great job at breaking down the proccess into super basic concepts. It only took 1 hour to cover the absolute basics of poe cafting. Lol.
@NyxVellum Loving your PoE content, friend! Thanks for the content. Also, I LOL'd at you tabbing back into the game expecting a trade request, and instead getting a "Hai Baby."😂
Right away learned from this simply all the things that alt can tell you. Hope that alt look can be set to always on. And oh my gosh the mod groups thats good to know. Thank you for making this. Very distilled.
PoE is like 1+1 = 2 (2-1) + (3-2) gives the same value as 1+1, the more you know the more way you can make it easier or cheaper ( imagine 1+1 method costs a mirror and the other method costs 10 chaos) Just read (or know what to read lol, the essence which reforge has "or reforge" on it that you didnt read)
Hats off to both of you! You are doing god's work! Please make this a content series! I am sure this will be the "go to" channel of newbies and tenured exiles! More power to your YT channel! I sub to subtractem!
just seing how geniune ur reaction are make me subs ur chanel, its great to see another new player trying to learn crafting in POE.. i also following this video step by step, hope u make similar content on other crafting method
A big thing to understand and probably what he pointed out with the sceptre :) we are all casual poe players :) so our items will probably not have 6 out of 6 perfect prefixs/suffixs :( For us r 3 very useful stats on a sceptre already a very good item what will carry us into t16 maps :) the other 3 stats are just bonus and random, kind of ignore them :) and buy fractured base put one essence on it and craft with ur bench is the first step to improve ur gear :=) for a time step u r able to do that when u have done ur first couple of white maps :) To improve ur gear earlier : U should just go for a item where u able to get 2 of ur mods u want :) so just put a essence on it and craft one and everything else is just bonus and kind of ignore it :) Improve earlier earlier look on a rare item look if there is one of ur preferred mods and craft a second one it :) bäm the other 4 mods a just bonus And in campaign it's enough to have one or two good mods one a item, in campaign it's more important to have the right gems in ur item For example Racers look in the first town if there is a wand with for example blue blue green sockets then when they have a alch they put it on the wand and all the stats are just bonus and they have a wand till act 4 just because of the 3 perfect sockets:) ( for everyone else I know the there is a crafting recipe)
Im about 600hrs deep in and this was great to watch. I'm getting myself into crafting more and more. But feel I'm still a beginner in poe :D Crazy game but so fun.
Great video! I always struggle with crafting in PoE. Its just so many methods, so much stuff and steps. I get essences and think "ok, im ready to craft" just to realize i wouldve been better crafting with lifeforce or bench craft... or combination of all 3... and now with the graveyard its even more insane
I've been playing for ~25k hours and I've yet to see a Mirror of Kalandra drop, they are so exceptionally rare that they basically don't exist unless you buy one.
One time I've met a brand new player on global struggling to complete the acts, I've helped him out and carried him all the way to maps, and told him to follow a build guide to get a better experience out of the game. He did, and he also looked up how to farm currency, and began improving his Ice Shot Deadeye. I shit you not, not even a month later, dude sends me a PM linked with a mirror. Mf dropped a mirror with not even 100 hours into the game. Best part is, initially he didn't even knew how extraordinarily rare was the thing he just dropped, he knew it was important because of his item filter. But then he looked it up and freaked the fuck out. I've played 3,000+ hours and the best I've got was the a mirror shards that drop from Harbingers. I guess the only way I'm ever going to get a mirror in my stash is if I farm the currency and buy one, but I always end up spending the currency to improve my build before I save up enough to own one.
I've watched this video two weeks ago before I tried to follow a build guide and beat the campaign, and I just heard you two talking rubbish and I don't understand sh*t, now that I followed a build guide, beat the campaign, and getting into yellow maps, now I truly gets how those words and steps mean. That's a hell of character development I get from POE, which I love
Never put any thought into the orbs and how the look translates to what each one does. Man, the little things I learn make me appreciate this game more.
The biggest hurdle with crafting that most people have (as evidenced even in this video) is they need to actually read thoroughly everything that the orb does, instead of just be so quick to try and spam it. The ORB and essence says EXACTLY what it does, on it. When Nyx kept asking which essence could be used to re roll the rare, it says right on the essence itself if it can be used and what level modifiers it is. 😉
It's not casual friendly, but damn if you're willing to put a few hours into learning it.. it is such an amazing take on crafting. By far my favorite in any game
This was absolutely awesome. Thank you guys. Now I might craft something good and not just hoping that something good will happen after alching and vaaling an item 😂
IMO that's a problem with following build guides~ People never learn the game, when I first started playing I just played the game like I would if I was playing through the campaign of d1 or d2. I've never followed a build guide and when I started I made a point of not looking stuff up and just enjoying the game, now 9 or so years later I have still never followed a build guide and I make my own characters every league, sure I'm not good at the game and I would never want to be because I know myself and it would consume my whole life.. but just being competent and having fun is more than enough. So TL:DR Just play the game like a game and have fun.
I'm not even halfway through this, a number of things i knew, some i heard explicitly for the first time. But already I can say: this format is great and would be great if there was more of. Most PoE content you need a Phd to understand what's going on after 30 seconds - for newer players that's a tremendous hurdle
Start with the very basics, essence spamming fractured items. If you have the curiosity and slowly branch out to various systems then most of it comes more naturally then you would think at first. I was daunted by crafting and mostly ignored it for my first few thousand hours. Now I barely ever leave my hideout when playing. I just craft stuff and often make stupid amounts of currency doing so. It isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy it, they tend to become obsessed with it.
I love the initiative :) But it's like cleaning or doing dishes, kind of a chore to learn crafting, so in line with my nature I'll put it on my "watch later" list :D
Having played only SSF league I am so amazed how someone can't just look at an item and see what it does. This is also why I decided to never migrate because I don't need any kind of currency to change the way I play the game. I get my items from my own game instance and if I am lost I check the wiki to see how I should get a certain item.
The fact that the annulment removed the three mods you wanted is poetic hahaha
And captures the essence of PoE crafting so well 😂
TRULY a guide to PoE crafting
This was fantastic! I would love to see a follow-up episode where he takes you through:
0. Asking you what item you actually want or helping you decide on one for your build
1. Buying the correct base
2. Looking at poe tw for modifiers and picking them out
3. Assessing what your best crafting route is via Craft of Exile
4. Crafting the item
That would be absolutely a treat to watch. I just went through that with my friends who are starting the game and while they thought it was a bit overwhelming, the fact that they ended up with a USABLE item at the end made them very fulfilled. That, to me, is what makes poe crafting great.

Yeah, I heard you can do *unreal* things with the newest Unreal Engine! Sorry for that pun.
This was a video we were all looking forward to! ~Kerzahd
"Isnt that risky? its like gambling" Subtractem laughing :"Welcome to path of exile"
And he was right
I wasn't watching, but listening and the moment I heard that I stopped what I was doing and cackled violently to see if Sub's response was similar.
You know this guy mastered the art of crafting in path of exile when you see his hair is gray
AHAHAHAHHAA

Oh god teach me guru. 😁 I’m lost with crafting and for a huge part gathering the currency to craft anything decent -_-

To the question 'What should beginners take away from this to help them in the campain'
I would say that the most important thing is this. Whe you sense that your build is having problems in damage or resistances. Grab a good BASE(ilvl+sockets) from the vendor in town and throw an essence on it to garanty a rare item.then take your 3-5 mod item to your crafting bench and add life-resists-atkspeed.

@@NyxVellum well... in a way yes. but not in a mean way xd.

A big thing to understand and probably what he pointed out with the sceptre :) we are all casual poe players :) so our items will probably not have 6 out of 6 perfect prefixs/suffixs :(
For us r 3 very useful stats on a sceptre already a very good item what will carry us into t16 maps :) the other 3 stats are just bonus and random, kind of ignore them :) and buy fractured base put one essence on it and craft with ur bench is the first step to improve ur gear :=) for a time step u r able to do that when u have done ur first couple of white maps :)
To improve ur gear earlier :
U should just go for a item where u able to get 2 of ur mods u want :) so just put a essence on it and craft one and everything else is just bonus and kind of ignore it :)
Improve earlier earlier look on a rare item look if there is one of ur preferred mods and craft a second one it :) bäm the other 4 mods a just bonus
And in campaign it's enough to have one or two good mods one a item, in campaign it's more important to have the right gems in ur item
For example Racers look in the first town if there is a wand with for example blue blue green sockets then when they have a alch they put it on the wand and all the stats are just bonus and they have a wand till act 4 just because of the 3 perfect sockets:) ( for everyone else I know the there is a crafting recipe)
So funny to see your brain literally bleeding about all the informations. 😂
Never felt myself so overwhelmed in my life. Still love the game.
Damn. This is a great beginner's crafting tutorial
43:00 "you get one per 5000h played" Me sitting here with 8000h and wondering where my mirror is.
I dropped a mirror on my first day playing before I knew what it was and used it on some shit low level ring. 10k hours and I haven't seen another
That was the of the best noob friendly tutorials when it comes to crafting
Glad you liked it
A video where tou have a piece of gear as a goal and Subtractem takes you through all the steps to get to that item would be amazing
"there's no gold in poe" jinxed it
Im about 600hrs deep in and this was great to watch.
I've watched this video two weeks ago before I tried to follow a build guide and beat the campaign, and I just heard you two talking rubbish and I don't understand sh*t,
now that I followed a build guide, beat the campaign, and getting into yellow maps, now I truly gets how those words and steps mean.
That's a hell of character development I get from POE, which I love
I legit thought someone took over Nyx's channel 🤣
Nobody expects the sudden Nyx face reveal! ~Kerzahd
This guide is amazing thank you. So incredibly helpful. Subbed and liked.
Subtractem's guides are the reason I can (occasionally) profit craft a few divines each league.
How dare you make me read
As someone who stumbled upon POE around abyss. It’s interesting seeing what people do and don’t pick up on.
It's not casual friendly, but damn if you're willing to put a few hours into learning it.. it is such an amazing take on crafting. By far my favorite in any game
Watching these orbs being used only for education is still painful
"I think arguably the single best design decision that they ever made in making Path of Exile was there is no such thing as gold" haha
Mate I've been playing POE casully for years and always avoided crafting because it was so confusing. This video has educated me so much
49:18 I know EXCACTLY whats going through Nyx mind in that moment 😂😂😂
I need this. Getting tired of having my currency evaporate and being left with shit gear.
Happy to help
holy shit he looks like his avatar but with a beard
Who knew
This was absolutely awesome. Thank you guys. Now I might craft something good and not just hoping that something good will happen after alching and vaaling an item 😂
You can do it!
@@NyxVellum I will!
This is really helpful. I've played this game for 1500 hours, but crafting was always beyond me. 😅
IMO that's a problem with following build guides~
People never learn the game, when I first started playing I just played the game like I would if I was playing through the campaign of d1 or d2.
So TL:DR
Just play the game like a game and have fun.
It isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy it, they tend to become obsessed with it.
your next session would be "how to use trade site optimally".
I can only suffer so much
@@NyxVellum those fractured items won't search themselves man, you got this.
nicely done
Thanks for this video. Really opened my eyes on how vast this game is🤣
I love the initiative :) But it's like cleaning or doing dishes, kind of a chore to learn crafting, so in line with my nature I'll put it on my "watch later" list :D
this was soooooooooooooooo helpfuul!!! thanks both of you guys!
Having played only SSF league I am so amazed how someone can't just look at an item and see what it does. This is also why I decided to never migrate because I don't need any kind of currency to change the way I play the game. I get my items from my own game instance and if I am lost I check the wiki to see how I should get a certain item.
