I think "remastering" your older beginner painting tip videos would be great way to include tips that you have learned since making the original videos
Lots of other RUclipsrs who do tutorial content also do updated videos, get new viewers, update them with thinks learned since them. Scott should definitely do it.
I think the "teaching X with a beginner" format is a great idea! So often, experts cover a topic from a very clean perspective, but being a beginner is never clean. We mess up, misunderstand things, or require multiple explanations. Having a noob to keep your explanations grounded sounds like a great approach.
Hard agree! Plus a new person is going to have a different perspective and ask questions that somebody who's been doing it for a while might not think about.
The beginner asks questions that an experienced painter doesn't realize or remember isn't common knowledge. Plus we can see common mistakes and how to handle them.
I like thumbnails that are unified. For example, for yourself, the red background and a picture of your face showing something. Being able to know the channel quickly based on the thumbnail layout design is really helpful.
27:17, that’s it dog. That’s the secret. Just be the maniac. I’ll be one to tell you that some of your videos don’t necessarily sing to me but your overall enthusiasm for what “YOU” enjoy inadvertently makes me enjoy it with you. It’s like when a sneaker head talks about shoes. I don’t give two f*cks about shoes but to see a buddy cheese over new kicks that are slightly different than the 30 pairs he already has kinda makes it worth it. Keep doing you brother that’s why I show up.
What you said at 5 minutes strongly resonates with me. I put many videos in my watch later, these later get recycled in my feed, and I get annoyed when their thumbnails rotate. It feels like there are tactics being used to force my click when I was going to get to it on my own time, regardless.
The thumbnail thing seems to mirror what Netflix does. But I agree, it does make me feel like I’m being “tricked” into watching something I’ve already seen.
@@Miniac That is exactly what happens to me. I didnt know it was youtube doing it. EDIT: I will say that I am glad that it seems you have to tempered down on the clickbaity thumbnails though. I still get notifications fairly regularly that a comment I left on your painting with a beginner video is getting engagement. Definitely the most evergreen content I have on RUclips. Haha. I still maintain that there is something charming and disarming about filming yourself having a conversation with someone while painting. I loved your chat with Vince and think a series where you chat and paint with other creators would be a blast to watch.
I like the simple painting videos. Thats the content I love most, seeing the process for you when painting things. I think thats why the chef video won. Its that process.
I feel bad that you have to read and deal with all these negative comments on content you provide for us. I find the videos you produce genuinely entertain me. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for such a deep dive behind the scenes, it's nice to get some perspective into the back-end side of mini painting channels. FWIW I've been getting your content regularly on my front page despite not being subscribed (something I've just corrected!) and yeah, I agree with others' frustration regarding thumbnail/title changes (a problem that is in no way exclusive to your channel). Personally I'm hitting a bit of a wall in my painting, and I think part of it is because I spend a lot of time watching videos about painting and then I psych myself out of actually sitting down at my desk and getting to it. You touched on it in this video, but the proliferation of painting content is also intimidating in some ways; sometimes it's frustrating to see a glut of content around the same concept at the same time, other times I feel bad when I don't watch a creator I like and then my algorithm "forgets" about them over time. Also re: content variety - it may be hypocritical for me to say as someone who doesn't always watch my subscriptions when they do content that's way outside their lane, but I think it's important to branch out and do different things, if for no other reason than your mental health! One thing I'd like to see a painting RUclipsr tackle: how to fix screw-ups. There's a lot of "don't do A, do B instead," which is nice, but it'd be good to get some insight on "you've been painting something for a few hours and your brush slipped/you realized something isn't working/you feel like a failure, how do you pull back from the edge and recover."
Stating intent is SO important when teaching. Quite often while learning, the pupil may wonder "Well why are we doing it this why? Why not do it this other way?" and when it comes to watching a video, we don't get the chance to ask those questions live. So stating the intent really helps understand the reasoning behind why something is done a certain way.
Pumped to see more necromunda on your channel! As a note on the thumbnails, It doesn't have much effect on if I watch the a video. But having the video pop up a couple times is a plus. I will see a video is released, but not have the time at that moment to watch it. So having RUclips show me the video again is a plus.
Love your work, and thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. Your videos keep me motivated to keep painting. I am always looking forward to the next video. Thank again!!!
LOL back to work after the holiday and REALLY going through the ringer with all the work. I needed this video today man, thanks a ton for the laughs :) keep doing you man, I'm here for it.

If I don’t see things on my feed, sometimes I just forget people exist, even people I enjoy watching. There are definitely my “favorite” creators that I will check subscriptions for their content, but sometimes people just get forgotten. Out of sight out of mind in this busy world!
Watching this on new years day is a good start of the new year, I hope to get a lot of good hobby time on 2025. All the best for this year to you and yours!
Huge fans of your content for years Scott, and love the year end wrap up! I did miss Amber reading the mean comments with you! Can’t wait for more videos next year!
If I could ask anything, have at least 1 video of a model you are so hyped to painted per month. I love watching your stuff and throwing in a random game is fun. I love the idea of a sequel to the basics with a novice, assuming it can pan out. Also loved bringing in another creator to teach, that was eye opening. Please keep doing what you do, and here are some bands that may fit your set list, they were new to me this year: Nothing More, Falling in Reverse, Jervis Johnson, and Shamans Harvest.
Absolutely made my day that you read out my silly question, thankyou for the good humour. Also, Thankyou for another good year of content, good luck with your plans for the channel
I came back to the channel in the last couple of months. Had fallen away because it seemed like you were just going through the motions with no real passion. When you mentioned your favourite vid of the year, i knew it would be necromunda. I could feel your enthusiasm exploding off the screen and I immediately resubbed! Love what you do man, love what you do!
Def a strong end to the year. Enjoy your break and catch up in Jan. I wonder if you or your regular viewers would value a monthly rota - e.g. week 1 = skill refresher / essential tool reviews, week 2 = adv masterclasses, week 3 = games spotlight inc your own game design progress, and week 4 freeform! Maybe not great for those who only value one aspect of your content but having structure plus a freestyle slot could help with planning and editing etc while giving enough variety and creative license? Anyway, here's to a prosperous 2025 for you and the Miniac channel!
Hey, a warning Re: shorts, at least in the circles i float around in, the net effect of introducing shorts to the channel has been negative. Obviously we're in very different sections of the platform so i dont want to speak with complete confidence but ive heard FAR more "a few viral shorts ruined my channel's regular video performance" than anything positive. From what i can tell, a lot of shorts viewers are only watching shorts, and will either be fed your regular videos after liking your shorts or subscribe to your channel for more shorts and never watch your regular videos despite being served them on their home page, therefore hurting your CTR and nuking the channel. Again, we're doing very different things on this here RUclips so this might not be entirely relevant but i wanted to pipe up with what ive heard in the dark corners that we gaming tubers inhabit. Love what you do, cheers.
So glad your channel exists at all, I got back into warhammer 40k back in 2020 and was glad this channel was around to help me learn new things like slap chop and just cool ideas I wouldn't have tried to begin with. Thanks for all the content and the helpful videos.
Hi Scott, Love the channel, I miss this metal intro and outros but them being reduced is makes the episodes easier to binge. You made a comment about checking out Subs tab, personally I refresh my home page which feels like you tube just gives me a new random set of videos to watch. I'll only check the Subs Tab if I am looking for something in particular. My Favorite is your Imperial knight conversion and paint job as well as your necromunda gang. I do not play 40k or Necromunda but I loved the long format and the talking parts seemed really genuine the hobby action was interesting and exciting to watch.
Hey man, your channel got me back into mini painting when the last time I painted was mono-color mechs back when I was a teenager. Always love your content. As for 2025, maybe branch out into some more mini games like Conquest, Trench Crusade, and Infinity? Also, paint the Zaku. Its in your closet if you forgot about it.
I've blocked and said "I dont want this" to so many channels that my Algo feed is basically my subscriptions tab anyway. I usually only get two scrolls in on my home feed before it says "your home feed has expired", so then I go check my subscriptions anyway
When you're talking about the roadblock of the algorithm showing us you're videos, I am absolutely guilty of just refreshing the home tab trying to find something new. I always aim to watch your videos, but I honestly never check my subscriptions when on PC.
The YT thumbnail test shows watch time share, not just click through which doesn't make any sense. They want to disincentivize clickbait(fair), but retention time doesn't really corelate exactly to thumbnails imo. Overall, super interesting video and I appreciate the look behind the scenes. Keep it up!
My favourite shit video of the year! Love your stuff Scot and hope to see your recent hustle continue! I watch every video you make and thoroughly enjoy every one of them. I don’t even need a thumbnail or title just the notification that you posted again! Ps, please try make a deal with blizzard to make more 3d stl files that they can sell for busts of all their main characters 🙏🙏
I’ve seen so many videos talking about lighting for painting. I’ve recently started painting and obviously chose the worst mini to do… chaos legionnaires… I love them, but feel like I’m probably never painting these guys again. To get back to the whole lighting thing… those lights are needed for actually seeing the mold lines. I’m repainting so many spots because I didn’t see the mold lines. Then again it’s my first set of painting, and maybe no one can see those lines without holding it directly under my light. Also this has nothing to do with what you’re saying, as much as if you do another tip video explain those lights are important ALL the time. TLDT: good lighting is needed for seeing mold lines too.
I LOVE the alternate thumbnails for a video. If I don't immediately watch a video, seeing the different thumbnails and thus the alternate takes on the title and content in the video gives more chances for a viewer to be convinced. It often works on me.
The Chef video is my favorite because I get to see the beginning to end process. As someone that learns from watching something get done successfully, and then mirroring that process myself, I appreciate the scope of the video. I also enjoyed the model and paint job in the thumbnail.
Just wanted to say, as someone trying to build a channel and a business with RUclips, I found this video incredibly valuable. Love your work too! Thanks for posting this.
I also hope that doing something every week doesn't burn you out in some way. I value your mental health more than I value you making more content. Be safe. Much love and prosperity to you and yours in the year to come.
Glad you got to play Thunder Road Vendetta. The original is a favorite from my childhood and I was so excited when Restoration Games announced a remake. I backed everything from the KS campaigns, got all the content, and it's one of those games I'll never get rid of. It's just pure chaotic fun.
Happy new year Scott! Looking forward to what 2025 brings to the channel :) When I got back into the hobby in 2016 after a 10+ year break, you and Tabletop Minions were the first channels I discovered. I've been watching since then. I've always appreciated your quality over quantity approach and the advanced techniques.
Anecdotal experience here on the algorithm not surfacing videos subject: I have a “large” amount of channels I’m subbed to (over 25) and it tends to change the content I see when I click on the subscriptions filter based on what channels/content type I’ve been watching most frequently and recently. For example: with the election it appears that election based news got surfaced up in my subs and mini content got pushed down, probably because that’s what I was engaging with most at that moment. Past the election, it’s surfacing less news content and more gaming/mini content again. However it’s also choosing to show me Ninjon, Squidmar and Midwinter minis more frequently than you (despite my two favorite channels actually beings Monica and TUP). I make a point to watch all your videos, especially with your new one-a-week plan, because it’s what I want. However the algorithm is definitely working against you rn
I would love to see a commentary-style remaster of each instructional video from the early days, featuring a rotating cast of painters (Jon, Brent, Vince, etc). You and the feature discuss parts of the video that were good and parts you'd change now, add some tips you've learned, and maybe paint some minis using the tips from the video. It could help you feature more community members while also driving engagement back to your older videos.
I love that Yogscast reference. Having watched them for a decade, and having loved the way have diversified their content, so I am super excited to see what you put out inspired by them. This channel has been amazing for the nearly 5 years I have watched. Thank you for all you do.
I agree with your view on the multi thumbnails. There have been a couple times I skipped a video because I was busy with something else, and I’d come back to it later. Then later on the thumbnail was different. It was a bit jarring. Personally I liked the first thumbnail better, so clicking on the video when a different thumbnail was displayed would have been incorrect in terms of analytics. I’d rather videos just have a single thumbnail. When it changes it makes me feel like I’m being pressured to click and watch it. Like “hey! You didn’t watch this video before. How about now? How about now?”
One of the things I like past your painting ability and humbleness is your unscripted videos. They honestly feel like they flow extremely well. The video that brought me to your channel was the chaos knight one. I had just picked up a regular knight to paint and was looking for any and all inspiration. I've liked your painting videos since. Sure, I disagreed with your AoS rules video, but people are allowed to have their opinions. I've only ever entered a bigger painting competition once before and I did middling, but I don't let it keep me down. I love to watch you, Ninjon, Squidmar and the Ebay Minitures Rescues guy each time I see a video pop up. I hope the next year treats you amazingly well and it doesn't end up an uff da of a year.
I've been seeing a lot of RUclips channels that I used to pop up in my feed beginning to pop up again. I'm guessing the algorithm has changed again (in a good way), though I'm also noticing a lot of creators posting videos where they're trying to figure out what happened as well. It's cool to hear you've got a plan, also interesting to see the fluxuations in view time. Just remember to keep it sustainable. Work some breaks in there so you don't burn out too. :)
I occasionally watch your channel even though I'm not into miniature wargaming. Old-school renaissance TTRPGs and drawing / painting maps is my jam. Hoping you have a great 2025, hoss!
I appreciate weekly content if the quality is good and not content made to only satisfy the algorithm. If so I’d rather enjoy a long good video a month instead! Keep up the inspiring work, Scott! Take care and don’t burn yourself out
The algorithm thing is maybe because the subscriptions tab tends to screw up from time to time. I recall not seeing a few of your videos in my subscribed feed and only learning about them through IG or the podcast. The only way to go around this I've found, is the notification bell feature.
I scroll through my subscriptions occasionally. I just checked and It took me a solid several minutes to scroll to where you appeared. Channels I hadnt watched in YEARS were higher on the list.
I left my airbrushing space when I moved out of my moms and sorta lost interest in building and painting without all my things. I still stayed subbed to you and several hobby channels but I just didn’t feel super into watching anything hobby related. The minute you start showing interest in a new hobby on RUclips the algorithm works fast to fill your home tab with it
I would say, yes. For sure. There is a certain channel that lately all they do is this: 1) Paint white. 2) Apply neon paint. It rendered the channel useless for me on a personal level since that is what they are doing all the time. Im sure that people do learn at least something from each video you make. Your channel is one of the first I watched when I started painting. What I would warn agains is just sticking to the same thing and doing it over and over. I come from a place of ignorance since I know nothing about youtube as a content creator. However, as a consumer, I would only says stick to what you do, the way you do it. Even more if you highlight more games other than 40k. And yes, I get it, algorythm and such. Lol But yeah, you are awesome. Keep up the great job and amazing production value. Happy new year!
I made it in the video! Well I can't wait to see what you have cooking for those other games, been taking lot of inspiration from you lately been a great help
An issue that I have had is that despite subscribing and having the bell checked, some creators videos are still not showing in my subscriptions section.
While the subject matter is far from completely irrelevant my favorite mini painting videos on RUclips have been those where the friendships that have developed amongst the little microcosm that you belong to have been on display. I think I listen to/watch a lot of videos as a result of moving from working in close proximity with a bunch of my friends (restaurant kitchens) to working alone at home (software engineering) - I miss the camaraderie and banter. I don't watch Squidmar always necessarily for the content, but for Emil and Luka's dynamic on camera. I love seeing the footage from VinceyCon from yours, Vince's, Jon's, and Sam's points of view. Maybe the special sauce in the Painting Faces with a Beginner video was just the added component of direct human interaction. I also love Drunk Mini Painting, please bring that back.
34:27 Your sentiment on competitive painting is very similar to my feeling. It's more fun for me to paint a bunch of medium quality models and play games rather than stress over one model. That being said, I reserve the right to change my mind and get into competitive painting and love it.
I would love a series of the basics where you show each of the basic techniques to a new painter. Even though I would consider myself to be a medium level painter, I think it would be helpful and entertaining to watch you teach a new painter things like layering, basing, painting gems, nmm, true metallics, drybrushing, wet-blending, highlighting, etc.
omg, great idea to revisit beginner skills next to an actual beginner. I think the added back-and-forth really helps a beginner, especially hearing someone else voice clarifying questions.
one thing ive noticed as a viewer, looking at all these different content creator year in reviews was your painted mini count which you said was 40 ish. Someone like Eons Of Battle has painted 400 and squidmar has painted a few armies this year. Now obvious to a certain extent its apples and oranges and cant be compared - but i do think it says something about your content and where a gap might be. A lot of these other channels are doing cool minis and showing their processes off them much more regularly. Adding to this - looking through your views (it might be different under the hood) but all the higher viewed videos are the ones with lots of minis in the thumbnail. I personally much prefer clicking on videos which have minis in the thumbnail because I love to see what I'm getting in for, for instance if I saw a night lords thumbnail I would click on it because I know its about a night lord paint job - but if it was 'how to paint grim dark OSL' its a bit more vague and click baity which might turn people away. Hope this is interesting to you as a take from a viewer (P.S. as a guy who loves numbers and stuff your vids on improving your channel are so cool to me)
As a person who's watched for ever, I almost always operate through my "for you" page. I never check my subscriptions. What's funny is that no matter how long it's been since your last, your videos always show up in my feed. Also, I saw the Project Farm video in your feed. Nice
I wanted to add that I enjoy that you bring us in on the "inside baseball" of youtube content and how you plan to work through the problems you run into. It's really cool.
"The experience at the table is the only thing that matters." I freaking love this. Whenever I am DMing a D&D game the number one rule is that everything we do is for the purpose of having fun for all.
I think "remastering" your older beginner painting tip videos would be great way to include tips that you have learned since making the original videos
Would love to see this one. Good idea!
Agreed. Scott is a better painter now and the quality of his videos is considerably better.
Lots of other RUclipsrs who do tutorial content also do updated videos, get new viewers, update them with thinks learned since them. Scott should definitely do it.
Yes!!!!!!!! You’ve gotten so much better in all facets!
Those videos are what brought me to this channel. I would love to see updates

Happy New Year, Thanks for keeping our Hobby Fun!
Putting my voice behind the Teach a Beginner series. Also, I enjoy breakdowns of surveys, so thank you for sharing. :D
So glad your channel exists at all, I got back into warhammer 40k back in 2020 and was glad this channel was around to help me learn new things like slap chop and just cool ideas I wouldn't have tried to begin with. Thanks for all the content and the helpful videos.
Thanks for that info on the Thumbnail. I wondered why they were changing, not only for you but for others as well.
I go straight to my subscription page. Then I check the home feed. Because the algorithm is dumb. But I think I'm an outlier
Nope, same!
I rarely even make it to the home page. I just spend my time on the subscription page.
I've blocked and said "I dont want this" to so many channels that my Algo feed is basically my subscriptions tab anyway. I usually only get two scrolls in on my home feed before it says "your home feed has expired", so then I go check my subscriptions anyway
Love these year end videos. You should add in 3 positive comments you got this year as well (that you appreciated). Happy new year Scott (and all).
When you're talking about the roadblock of the algorithm showing us you're videos, I am absolutely guilty of just refreshing the home tab trying to find something new. I always aim to watch your videos, but I honestly never check my subscriptions when on PC.
Stoked on the new model!
Your videos are great I love the passion you have for games and the fact that you want to get better and care it’s refreshing keep it up
The YT thumbnail test shows watch time share, not just click through which doesn't make any sense.
It's just pure chaotic fun.
the linus comment from colin and samir hit me like a brick wall too.
Happy new year Scott! Looking forward to what 2025 brings to the channel :)
When I got back into the hobby in 2016 after a 10+ year break, you and Tabletop Minions were the first channels I discovered. I've been watching since then. I've always appreciated your quality over quantity approach and the advanced techniques.
Scott, you're just so entertaining to listen to, I'd watch any video you make!
Not the worst video on your channel, just another fun one! The worst video on your channel is the one that never gets made. Happy new year! 🎉
2nd comment, I'm really excited for your Dark Eldar video in the next year. Your DA army is one of the best themes for a DA army i've ever seen.
No joke, this is THE video I always look forward to every year. 🔥🔥🔥
OHHH I'd love to see you dip your toes into Gunpla. I love both hobbies and watching RogueHobbies videos on getting into it made me super happy
Thanks for all the great content in 2024. Definitely like the weekly videos. Hope to see you at adepticon next year. Hope you have a great 2025.
Thanks for the year mate.
Always looking forward to seeing more, maybe another gaming board build?
I scroll through my subscriptions occasionally. I just checked and It took me a solid several minutes to scroll to where you appeared. Channels I hadnt watched in YEARS were higher on the list.
I left my airbrushing space when I moved out of my moms and sorta lost interest in building and painting without all my things. I still stayed subbed to you and several hobby channels but I just didn’t feel super into watching anything hobby related. The minute you start showing interest in a new hobby on RUclips the algorithm works fast to fill your home tab with it
Im grateful for your content. Thank you Scott.
I still love "You're a Good Painter"
It's nice to revisit every so often
Love the channel. Keep it coming please.
Ayye I made it in again this year lol. Stoaked to see what you have for 2025 Scott!
I would say, yes. For sure. There is a certain channel that lately all they do is this:
1) Paint white.
One thing I have learned is that apparently a vast majority of RUclips users don't use the Subscription tab anymore, which makes me sad.
And I'm exactly opposite that. I rarely go looking for videos not in the subscription tab.
These are my favourite videos - don't hate me.
No hate, brother! I enjoy them too. The title is mostly a joke at this point.
My SO and I were cackling at your clap backs during the spicy comments 11/10 no notes
34:27 Your sentiment on competitive painting is very similar to my feeling. It's more fun for me to paint a bunch of medium quality models and play games rather than stress over one model. That being said, I reserve the right to change my mind and get into competitive painting and love it.
I am here for the Miniac arc. Also never use the subscription page. To many people I have subscribe to to support and no longer care about
I would love a series of the basics where you show each of the basic techniques to a new painter.
Another Miniac BANGER
one thing ive noticed as a viewer, looking at all these different content creator year in reviews was your painted mini count which you said was 40 ish.
Love you, bud. Going to keep watching regardless of what you put out because I vibe on your brand of entertainment.
Scott, just be you. Sometimes it's annoying, most times it's good & gives a lots of info. Keep going mate.
"The experience at the table is the only thing that matters." I freaking love this. Whenever I am DMing a D&D game the number one rule is that everything we do is for the purpose of having fun for all.
