    Vespasian was the emperor of Chads.
    He died of diarrhea, but he felt death closing in and stood up, saying "It would be unfit for an emperor not to die standing".
    And so he died: standing like an emperor.

    Vespasian took ill while at Reate. He actually continued performing the functions of office while ill and this was when he made his joke "Alas, I think I am becoming a God" - which was about the Senatorial practice of deifying Emperors after they passed away.
    He also did a lot more than mentioned in the video. He put a stop to the practice of using freedman as imperial executives which greatly cut back on corruption. Also crucial was he got himself named Censor and used the power to restock the Senate specifically with individuals from families who were active business people and not decadent (and who came from outside Rome in Italy and the provinces). In essence he restocked the political cupboard with people who were not by nature professional politicans. Out of this new Senate we got Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Aurelius.
    Fascinating emperor.

    Fun fact is that Nero's advisors facing Galba's revolt grouped legions into three groups: supporters of Galba, uncommitted legions, and loyalists. Most of the legions were uncommited and they feared would just switch to whoever was winning. They considered there were only 3 groups to be loyalists, the 3 Legions in Britannia who could not be notified without Galba intercepting a message, the one in Africa, and the legions in Judea. I'm a bit mystified as to why they considered Vespasian and all centurions in Judea loyalists. Vespasian might have been loyal to the imperial family at one point, but Nero made it clear Vespasian was out of favor after he fell asleep, so I have no idea why they expected him to come save Nero. Nero committed suicide before they could summon help, but I suspect help wouldn't come even if they had asked.

    • @Raphillon
      @Raphillon 2 года назад +8

      IDK, he could surprise you and actually go and help Nero. I don't think Vespasian was planning to take the throne from Nero. But of course, since Nero was lost anyway he thought "Why not myself? I bet I can be a better emperor than those clowns" and he was, in the end. We will never know for sure.

He was famous for his salty, ribald sense of humor in addition to being a great general and administrator. Famously honest, Vespasian was one of the few Roman governors who didn't fatten his wallet at the local's expense, and he later became, arguably, the greatest Roman and the greatest Emperor.

      Late but the one reason Domitian is as high as he is according to Spectrum is because he is the only Roman Emperor to have lowered inflation and fix the Roman economy. Case in point, whereas other Roman Emperors were debasing the currency, Domitian raised the value of a silver coin to about 97-98%. There was no other Emperor that can say that. Not even Diocletian's economic reforms were able to fix it and so he started over with the soldius, aka the stereotypical gold coin.
      Edit: Foolishly gave Domitian's accomplishment to Diocletian.

As a Republican, he can be one of the top 10, or one of the worst by just, you known, destroying that politic system and finishing any changes to fix that system. As a men, well, he was a bastard, how didn't have any problem to use everything to be at power. You're in debt?, well run to the greek islands with any excuse (like going to study), get captured by pirates, double down your ransom and return with an army to earn all the money from the ransom+spoils and pay your debts (don't forget to chop the pirates heads) Yes, very nice guy.

    Wasn't it Vespasian who had Cladius deified after Nero tried to wipe his memory from existence?

    Vespasian was the only emperor to “perform miracles” in his lifetime. Healed the lame with his touch, blind man with his spittle. Sound like anyone you’ve heard of? Also he was proclaimed the Jewish messiah by Rabbi Ben Zakkai, Josephus, Suetonius & Tacitus. Vespasian & Titus even used the messianic star on their coins as political propaganda. Read the book Creating Christ to follow the trail even more.

    To be honest, I think it was no coincidence that you … forgot? … Vespasian. He does not belong to any list, and be it one with Augustus on it, _he_ is in a class on his own. I would even put him in second place on your previous list.

    3:00 for anyone who couldn’t understand what word he was using, it is “Muleteer” meaning a person who drives mules. The Latin name is “Mulio”.
    I didn’t know what he was talking about so I had to pause the video and spend a while trying to figure it out so I figured I’d share that in case anyone else also gets hung up on dumb little stuff like that lol

    This mistake remains me a tale of Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar. Is about a famous historician specialized in Roman History that pusblished a book that seems to be the definitive subject about the subject. But soon his colleagues relized that he forgot about Carcalla. The backlash became so hard he decide to commit suicide. But please, don't do something like that. I've just discovered your channel and I love it.
