We ESCAPED LOCKDOWN!! - Ready to Start Cruising Again (MJ Sailing - Ep 155)

- First we thought we'd be leaving the marina at the beginning of April, but after COVID, that idea was pushed to mid-May. Well, while day sails were allowed, it wasn't until July 4th that cruising became permitted again and we were let out of lockdown to begin our season.
As we're released from our marina, we wanted to keep close and see all the sights of the Plymouth area that had been off limits to us as cruisers for the past few months. Heading up the Tamar River, we branched off into the Lynher River where we found a nice secure spot just before Dandy Hole to drop our anchor.
And although there is a lot to see by boat and by dinghy, before we could get too far away from Plymouth, we had our friend Alasdair (@bongo_sails) drive us into Dartmoor National Park for a hike around the reservoir. It was the perfect summer day in England, and walking through some of these trails, we could have sworn we were in a story book.

That was so much fun. I know you all are so glad to be on the move. It is so awesome to see. Here in the US as this date things are all blowing up. From Nashville here. But so thankful to be able to skip away from all this and hop on board with you guys. You have no idea how good it is to escape with you all regardless of whether you are on the move or stuck aboard. But so glad for you all that you are exploring.

Great Britain is ineradicable. I didn't know they had such quaint gorgeous back country regions. Everything looks so pure and balanced with the ecology. I thought it was all covered by urban sprawl. Good exploring.
Im from Stockport, England. I'm a truck driver and i can tell you GB is lush green rolling countryside almost everywhere. The thing is that the powers that be try to cram everyone in to the city's and that's what you see on TV and News. You once needed an airplane to know the truth if you were a poor working class miner or mill worker, today we all have cars and Google Earth🛩😉

I try to remember, and appreciate, that you have to walk/run three times the distance (out to place the camera, back to where you started and back to the camera). Especially appreciated when you're going up/down. Thank you.

I took my speedboat down to Seaton last week for the first time this season and managed to get out twice. The sea air, the smells, the views oh unbelievable. I am learning to sail at my local club up in Worcestershire so one day maybe I can do some cruising. Hope to see you on the Jurassic coastline

I have loved your videos for a while now, I was especially fond of the music, "Pandemonium" was especially beautiful. I finally looked in your credits and found out who sang it. Wow, what a talented young lady, but man I am now bummed..... I still love your channel, but it did remind me just how cruel this world can be. I'm surprised that the English countryside by the water isn't more developed. It looks like it would be a beautiful place to live and build a nice home with a dock.
zoning laws, land ownership, and tradition prevent the entire country being turned into a playground for real estate speculators destroying everything to build McMansions.

Foxgloves may get their name from the legend that Foxes wore the flowers on their paws to aid stealth. You might also venture deeper into Dartmoor and seek out one of 70 bronze age stone rows, "The Plague Market of Merrivale" is one of the best.
never understood the English name. In Dutch they're called (translated into English) thimbleweed because the flowers are the size and shape of a thimble.
And yes, they're quite poisonous.
@@jwenting thankyou Captain, that is interesting. In Britain Thimbleweed is a type of Anemone and is also toxic.

Fun fact: The biennial Foxglove is the only plant that can walk. The will always move toward water and having such shallow roots it looks like they walk from place to place. Digitalis purpurea.
I used Wikipedia for more info on the "Foxglove" but absolutely nothing identifies it as "walking" or being able to "move toward water" which all plant roots do.

It's also a radar reflector ball. It increases your vessels radar reflection so other vessels can see you at night.
It's plastic, so no radar benefit there. But they do make metal ones for that reason.

As far as we can gather, they had been working with the gov. of the Netherlands for a few months to get them special visas for entry. Possibly a temporary residency? We're not sure.
Are you likely to get to Gosport, on Portsmouth Harbour? If you do, there's a drink and a meal waiting for you at the "Boathouse" here. ps, no locks here, but Eastbourne, Dover and Solent (top of Portsmouth Harbour) have them. Of those that haven't them, Brighton but especially Ramsgate can get very nasty with the wrong weather.
Love the food in the Boathouse, well worth popping in for.

Wow you guys have been away for awhile now. I know you have spoken of building a catamaran, will that be before you return to the states or are you building the cat in the UK
Still planning to do the catamaran build in the United States, but right now we're working to sell Elements over here if we can. If there are no buyers, we'll probably store her in August/September and fly back.

I am pretty sure that VHFs are licensed in the UK. How did you deal with that? Did you have to get a license for the VHF on the boat and an operator's license for one of you, or did they wave that because you're a foreign vessel?
You're required to have a radio license issued by your country. The US is simply a form filled out and money sent in.... No test or anything -Matt
How did u find England I’m from the northwest 12 miles outside of Liverpool
Our one and only issue with England is that the summer is cooler than we'd wish, lol. There were a few good weeks there in May, but June and July (so far) have been about 5-8 degrees (F) cooler than what we usually like.
It’s clearly shown on the navigation charts and GPS.
