  • Welcome back to our video series on language structures. This summer series is all about Scarborough's Reading Rope and how to implement the upper stands into your classroom instruction.
I’m Anna DiGilio, and in this video, we will explore how to address categorization and classification in the classroom to strengthen semantics. If you have not watched my video, “Understanding Semantics,” be sure to go back to that video and watch it first. It lays the foundation necessary to dive into these videos that focus on individual activities. Now, let’s jump in!
One important aspect of understanding semantics is understanding the skill of categorization and classification. The concept of categorizing and classifying is simple: it is what we’re doing when we organize things into groups based on how they are alike or different. This might seem simple, but it's a critical foundational skill that helps children make sense of the world around them.
If you're looking for a comprehensive, explicit and systematic literacy curriculum that addresses not just Language Structures, but all strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope, I urge you to check out Structured Literacy with E.A.S.E for grades K-4.
Structured Literacy with E.A.S.E. is a tier 1 program with tier 2 support and is aligned to the Science of Reading Research. You can learn more by going to www.structuredliteracy.com

This is amazing. I love how you explained this, and I love the idea of using open and closed sorts during GR
