The nearby town, Newell, contains a great many of my paternal family members. Been to lava beds a ton of times.

We went to some lava tunes in Lapine, Oregon quite a few years ago. They gave you a kerosene lantern at the entrance. Probably get LED lantern now. If I remember the tube was about 4 miles long and it was a dead end because it had collapsed. You could hear the traffic up above you. In spots the cave was about 50 ft in diameter. Long walk.

The nearby Fern Cave has drawings that seems to depict the 1054 Crab Nebula super nova. I have found many lava tubes around the Medicine Lake caldara and evidence of huge amounts of water bursting though an ice dam on the south side of the lake, perhaps 1,000 to 6,000 years ago.

Got to visit some lava tubes in Hawaii, one of the coolest caves I've been in. Never thought to look it up, but didn't know there were some in California. I'll have to plan a visit someday

Yeah. I'm watching you examine the weird formations in the walls and ceilings of these tubes and remembering when the Space Marines went down into the Alien Hive. And no gruff sergeant around to say "NOBODY TOUCH NUTHIN!"

I really like the design of the stairs/ladders there. My long-term plan at the observatory, in lieu of a small scissor-lift, would be to build in a "servicing balcony" at an azimuth we rarely visit. My thinking is stairs similar to those ending in a landing that can be used to service the feed point.

So cool! I wonder if they're subject to episodic flooding, and whether some lifeforms have adapted to that? Did you see any water down there?

It's a pretty dry area, these get a little rain during the year but nothing that would fill them up.

Has anyone tried to scan one of these caves with consumer gear- like a phone with depth or a Quest VR headset or a low end 3d scanner? I'm looking into what to bring when i go to Lava Beds next. (probably just going to bring the quest 3 and have it scan like its a regular room.

I bet someone's done it. That would be fun but also a hassle to bring the gear through crawls!

Heh... I used to date a chick from North Cali and we went there.
Oddly, I've also been to Hawaii, but it's mostly a tourist trap - unless you make an effort to not act like a tourist and do things like go exploring on your own.
