We live in Australia. We use a token for the supermarket trolley because I don't usually carry cash. We also get a kick out of finding coins in stray trolleys in the car park because some people can't be bothered taking their trolley back to the store, especially on a hot day. We save plastic drink bottles and cans for return and earn recycling centres. They're worth 10c each. We also take a bag with us when we go for our daily walks and pick up any cans or bottles we find along the way. It's surprising how it adds up. We average about $10 a week from that.

My 18 year old found a $200.00 like brand new lego set for $8.00 (and yes all the pieces were there) for her 16 year brother last year for Christmas! She won the best gift for the least money. We have always bought gifts for our kids at thrift stores and they always knew it. When they were little we had $20.00 to spend for each one and i would buy things all year and keep track of how much money i spent. The kids would ALWAYS look forward to how many great items that i would find for them. Now that they are 24 - 17 they buy each other gifts that they find at thrift stores. Some people think we are dumb but we have had so much fun with this over the years.🌞 You should have seen his face and how we all were so giddy that she had found that! She found it in the summer and hide it in her closet till Christmas! Oh my! The joy of the little things!🌞

    Prayers for Hope's arm.
I'm a major frugal with only 5 "no" answers. I received a Cross pen for graduation in 1978, I still use it everyday! I buy a dozen refills for about $6. I do have swaps with other women. I can bring silk scarves, extra costume jewelry, dresses and coats/wraps. We all leave with something new and interesting. Bulk buying is key. It's just me, but I buy a 25 pound bag of something, I'll keep what I need and either share with my daughter or neighbors who will be happy with the bonus. I live in an over 55+ neighborhood and I know of several widows who are finding price increases not keeping up with retirement income or just social security. They fuss, but I've lost my parents and siblings; so I tell them to allow me to share my blessings (in the name and memory of my Mom and Sisters) with me. This way they don't feel it's charity.
I grew up learning frugal living from Great Depression Era Grandparents and Parents. I learned very well and I brought up and taught my children the same way. I'm thankful my children understand that earning money is hard, so spending that money must be done carefully and wisely.
I'm not a Scrooge, I enjoy spoiling my grandchildren. As a family, we keep a little notebook with items they each would like for Birthdays and Christmas gifts, then we shop ALL year for items. None are offended with a gently used items! I keep a "gift closet" which I keep a various gifts, all bought at deep discounts, when a friend needs a gift, I have some things that make a friend happy.
I'm frugal, but not miserly! I'm thought of as odd when I don't spend like the "Jones'" they don't pay my bills!
I enjoy making up budgets for families as a hobby. I make a budget with their data and stay with them a few months until they grasp the idea and understand that a budget is NOT a scary thing, but it's more freeing than restraining. When I see they have hope for the future, that is what makes me happy!
Keep up the good work! You help so many! PS: I bought those recharging foot socks and I'm I serious like with them!!

I was able to use one sheet of aluminum foil for years before it developed holes in it. Since then, I've bought one roll of it. I've washed and reused plastic bags for about 25 years.
l keep one quarter in my pocket for Aldi's carts. I make sure no money is visible in my car, because I used to live in a large metropolitan area with a high crime rate. My car was broken into several times, so I learned to leave nothing at all visible out.
Not only have reused wrapping paper, I've made decorations for those gifts out of the fronts of recycled cards.
I don't walk around in the dark because I'm too likely to fall. I don't have a good sense of balance anymore. When I was younger, I tried using only a candle in the evening, and carried it from room to room, to see if my electricity bill would go down. It did, but I couldn't go on living without lights...
I went back to school in mid-life for a career change. I was in my late '30's. As I went around campus, I found a LOT of pens, pencils and coins, so I gathered them up. Years later, I still had tons of those pens. I gave a little neighborhood girl a couple of dollars to help me go through them to see if any of them still wrote. Most did. I still use some of them even now. If it still works, I still use it.
There seems to be a magnetic force field between discount racks in stores and me. I think I know how Hope feels about those. I have to look at every item there. I only get the items I know I'll use, though, and the discount has to be tremendous! Sale signs don't attract me so much anymore. It's usually for something I don't need and the savings is too paultry.
I used to write down errands in the direction I had to go to them, like, I'd write down all the errands I had to go east for under a column titled East. Did the same for each direction. That way I knew I was grouping errands together in the most efficient way. I've driven so EXTREMELY little in the last couple of years that I don't group errands like that anymore. For both '22 and '23, I literally only filled my car up 2 and a half times each year. I have things delivered now. But that's primarily groceries. This is my 4th no-spend year.
I stopped filling up a sink with any water to wash dishes. I spray water over the dirty dishes for a split second, and drench the dish cloth. Then I put a sparce amount of soap on it (people waste so much soap!), and use it to wash dishes. If the cloth gets cold or the soap suds die down, I'll re-wet and re-soap the dish cloth. While rincing, I use the very least amount of water to get the soap off. What I really do enjoy is making "dish rack sculptures!" No matter how many dishes there are, I like getting them all into one draining rack. That has been a competition at times! 😄
I compete with myself every month to see if I can get the water bill (plus electricity and gas bills) lower than they were the month before. I love that "game!"
AAA will do price comparisons for you, and I believe, make sure you get the best deal. I haven't used that service, but I plan to.
    Definitely re-gift.
What a fun video! Hope Hope is feeling better!!!

So it might be worth checking 🧪 her Vitamin levels. If necessary, supplement at least vitamin D 💊 until her arm is mended. 💪It will heal faster and grow stronger. Best wishes.💐

But if it's a small family, don't buy bulk without a way to store it to maximize it

I was looking for a black long sleeved, long top made of fleece or sweatshirt fabric. I looked for weeks online and in stores. Where did I find it on Tuesday? In a thrift store for $3.

This is a great podcast for the state that our country is currently in; so many people were never taught or encouraged to be frugal. Our future survival will depend on the majority of us following the ongoing advice of Larry and Hope.....and Phil. 😀

You are definitely frugal - you saved to pay cash for your house! That's as good as it gets!
By the way, I took your suggestion and signed up for Mint Mobile's offer in December to get 3 months free. I didn't actually activate it until last week but it was NOT EASY! Took 5 days with no cell service because our phones had been locked by Verizon when we purchased them 3 years ago and it was a serious effort- many hours on hold (we still have a landline, thank God) but the switch was finally completed. Suggestion- don't change all your phones at the same time. And start with an unlocked phone. We are happy now! Thank you!

I feel like the practice of reusing tea bags is a whole new level of frugality. Something to the tune of the Great Depression. I can remember my great grandmother placing her used tea bag on a special dish on the dining room table to reuse throughout the day.
Fond memories but I can’t bring myself to reuse a tea bag on a regular basis just yet.

Great video, Larry and Phil. I laughed so hard when you pulled out the rotary (dial-pulse) phone! I worked in the telecom industry during the 80s, and we used to test what was then the new digital technology against dial pulse to make sure all the protocols would cooperate. btw, glad to hear Larry affirm that if a guy asks a girl out, he pays. Also, I stopped going to movie theaters a long time ago. I invariably got stuck sitting behind someone who's 6'70" and a kid behind me kicking my seat. DVDs are a beautiful thing, and I make my own healthy popcorn for munchies.

My minimalism wars with my fugalism. Especially when it comes to my kitchen appliances. Even though I can cook it all on the stove, I just save so much more cooking it in an appliance. Especially if I found that appliance while out doing a little retail therapy 😅 my bread machines are $6 second hand shop finds.
Nothing wrong with mix and match cups. If one breaks, you just go find another fun one. My tea cups are the same. With 6 kids, it's just easier. When they do drop their tea cup or mug, we just go out and hunt down a new one for them at the thrift store.
Most of my furniture is thrift finds or even better free from friends who are buying new 😅

We have some hand-me-down furniture from parents and grandparents, and we are in our 70s. All the rest of our furnishings were purchased new and again we just keep things forever. When we buy a new piece of furniture we give the piece that we're replacing to either friends, family, or children of friends

I'm so glad I found your channel. After retiring from being a special needs teacher in Massachusetts and moving across country to buy a house where I could actually "afford" (barely) one, I have been kind of managing to support myself (functionally disabled) and my grown daughter (also disabled). I have never been as good at frugality as my daughter, but I am pretty good. But prices have gone up and up, and my health has gone downhill precipitously. I got very ill last week and that, combined with my growing sense of overwhelm, made me realize I need to start budgeting. Went to YT, typed in budgeting, and, of the several I checked out, yours spoke to me. You are just you. God, that is sorely lacking in media - even in real life, too often. You have truly helped me replace so much of my fear with a feeling that I can do this. I cannot thank you enough.

The bumper sticker trick is awesome! I recall seeing a sticker designed to look like a huge bandage. I told myself then that if I get a dent large enough. I would crumble in my budget and purchase one. Thank goodness I haven't had to do that.
