  • Trying to find an old road or trail that ran up the side of the main canyon close to where the old pond dam was built along Stevens Canyon Rd. Not sure what this road was built for, but it showed up as a "Jeep Trail" on the 1961 USGS topo map and it seems to be present on the 1982 topo map, although unlabeled.
This road appears to ascend up an old land slide scar and seems to have mostly slid away. Note to self: Don't build a road on a land slide! This is the sort of road that needs constant use and maintenance to remain passable.
I might try returning to see if I can get up to the faintly visible portion of road in the side canyon.

I saw this old "Jeep Trail" on the 1961 USGS topo map. I did take a short walk along is in Feb. 2022. Notice how dry it was in the photos, very little green brush and no fresh downed trees. 2 years later and the trail is almost gone, downed trees everywhere. I guess lesson learned is not to build roads where there have been recent land slides.
Anyway, this road seems to appear on the 1982 USGS topo map, although it's unlabeled. Not sure when MidPen acquired this property, but they had much of the Montebello Open Space land by that time. If anyone had a chance to use that "Jeep Trail" prior to it being abandoned, drop a comment below.

I need to take a closer look but that might be the road from Harmon’s old place that MidPen bought

Interesting, thanks for the info. MidPen doesn't seem to have much in the way property acquisitions before around 2010 when they started posting everything on-line. They probably have file cabinets full of paper docs buried some place.
That road shows up on the 1961 Palo Alto map:
