According to Clark (1993), we have a minimum of two mental vocabularies: phonological (what we use when we listen and talk) and orthographic (what we use to read and write). Researchers refer to these four types of vocabulary as listening, speaking, reading, and writing vocabulary, each of which is integral to vocabulary development (Armbruster, Lehr, & Osborn, 2001).
