Still loving all your videos. I wondered if you'd seen this one. My daughter's Great Grandfather and my beloved ex. Grand father in law was a Braw Lad (I don't know what year unfortunately) and I am sure he must have been in this video somewhere. player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-galashiels-and-braw-lads-gathering-1951-1951-online
Many, many of my ancestors were Scottish border men who were forced into Ulster before coming to America where they changed the world.I'm very, very proud of my bloodlines.
Ulster here myself, Mark's work is so good...my favorite historian. Sister I hear ya and the reason for this republic of America was founded on the backs of those who remembered the declaration of Arobroath in 1320. I hope this freedom our families died for are not in vain. Scot-Irish with pride.
Another great video Mark, thanks! The Battle of Ancrum Moor, 1545 was also where The Kerr's gained their motto, 'Late But in Earnest'. You are a natural commentator and I have recommended your video to some Kerr's.
My name is Scott Douglas and I’m 55 years old. I only heard of the Good James Douglas from my grandfather. Never in any history books. I’m glad are people like yourself put the history out there. Thanks again
Me , a Gordon , mine are from aberdeenshire. But I have a deep interest in scotland and its history. My Great grandFather and GrandFather both came from there , and I know lots of feuding went on but many battles fighting the Romans and English. Great video !
Slowly but surely I'm getting through your videos i must say that was loaded with emotion Our language washed away by a southern reign our lands baught and sold through greed and gain You hit the nail on the head we are not told , taught about anything really monolithic Neolithic Wallace Robert De Bruce Victorian world war 1 and 2 is essentially the entire school resources I'm going to stop my self short as it angers me greatly
I am very appreciative of your explorations Mark. I am reading up on and tracing my ancestors (Clan Armstrong) and find your footage and historical documentation valuable. Thank you!
Your video's are extremely well presented and very interesting. I come from a Border family myself, except from the English side in Northumberland, a small hamlet called Hebron, but I have plenty of Scot's blood, as is the case in the Borders for many people.
Thank you Mark for this little known fact of history. As you say, why could we not commemorate this victory of those brave Bordermen and women at Ancrum Moor against a powerful rampant tyrant.
I've just found you're videos of Borders history and you bring to life a people that aren't talked about in general history , i myself am a Ormiston and my ancestry is from Teviotdale , i recently visited Scotland and i stopped off at Ormiston Mains by the river teviot and looked up from the river at the site of Ormiston Castle which has been raised to the ground, unfortunately couldn't gain access due to electric cattle fence (misspelt Orminston castle of Google maps) such a tranquil place now. I discovered it was attacked by the English twice and was severely damaged in 1544 , the border people's were hardened by the violence brought upon this area and thus became Border reivers as a way of survival , that i have learned in recent months , great to see someone passionate about the history of the border people's who lived here.
Very much enjoy your videos Mark, it's to bad all this history is slipping away. I have recently learned through DNA testing that the Borders is where my family came from.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Jace Eliseo thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Very True Mark.. Yet what people fail to realise to this day, that people in England and Scotland, particularly on the Borders, were much of the same Ilk, it was their leaders and their ideologies that brought them to fight against each other via the Elite such as Henry VIII etc etc. Have you done perhaps a video on Branxholme Castle and the Hanging Tree etc per chance? My folk stemmed from around those areas.. So it would certainly be of interest. The Bloody Burn, The Bonny Lass o' Branxholme etc. Not to mention Blind Wullie Craw who was considered to be 2nd to Thomas the Rhymer in his psychic abilities.
I have watched 2 of these videos and have enjoyed their dramatic style etc. However, I can’t help feeling they are very much slanted to England (bad) v Scotland (good). I’ve researched the Border Reivers a little bit and it is evident that they were from both sides of the border, both English and Scottish, but both sides never really showed any allegiance to either crown. In fact, they would often form alliances with each other not taking into account what nationality either one was, that wasn’t important to them. What was important was family (sometimes) but even more important land and property. I think some of the American searching for family history should know this. Indeed, Mark even points out that one family, the Kerr family, were more treacherous to Scotland than most and they were technically Scottish. Also, James VI/I was a Scot, a bit of balance maybe needed.
@@anthonyhiggins8604 At least he seems to have some recognition of the actual origins of the Scots (from the Germanic tribes), which is a step in the right direction. I'm far more bothered by Scots' lack of cogent national self-identity (i.e. not supplanted by the Highland Celtic mythos) than I am by a degree of somewhat inevitable hostility towards the English.
Great stuff Mark really enjoyed that. so much history in that video and some of the editing was superb. that camera of yours has some zoom as well. keep them coming.
I am not Neil , from Ontario , Great video , glad you are teaching this history so we can know and remember them with honour , and understand what our ancestors where faced with , and why they moved . It amazes me how much the Scottish borders looks like where my ancestors settled in North America. I once fell asleep on a bus between Edinburgh and Peebles. I awoke suddenly and thought I was at an intersection on the road between West Liberty, West Virginia and West Alexander, PA. The topography and even the trees looked familiar.
My family tower of Linton, Roxburghshire was destroyed in 1544 during the "Rough Wooing". Our family were "planted" in Ulster in later years. But we were borderers from around 1170. Then also gained land in Lanarkshire (Carnwath, Quothquan, Newbigging etc.).
rita rae yeah I do basically even though when England and Scotland unified most border clans were deported to Ulster, our family was deported to Yorkshire, and we’ve lived here ever since.
You do some great work Mark.....if you have paetreon or other ways to collect funds I would love to help with your research and history of this beautiful country.
