Something else I discovered through experiment is on RUclips in particular, 1080p suffers much worse compression than 1440p/4k. When I upload 1080p I would artificially upscale it to 1440p myself before uploading it onto RUclips, and this results in noticeably better quality than uploading the original 1080p, even though they both came from the same source. Something to factor in for folks creating content where image quality is important.

They say that 4K footage on a 1080p timeline gives more flexibility, allowing for cropping without quality loss. But what about 4K footage on a 4K timeline? Yes, cropping will reduce IQ, but only relative to the superior uncropped 4K footage, right? The cropped footage would still look as good as 1080 footage, won’t it? ( given you don’t crop more than that)

Ultimately 1080p on a 4k output will have lower total resolution (and same with cropping in 4k) but the chance of it being really noticeable will depend on how much pixel peeping the audience is doing, on what screen size and what type of detail is in the shot. Personally I use 1080p120fps and cropped in 4k all the time on 4k timelines and have never noticed or had others point out a significant issue:) Great to hear from you as ever and hope you’re doing well 💪

I am recording in 1080p currently as I have Canon M50 but when I upgrade to newer camera I will consider 4k. The question is: let's say I get new Sony zve10 or a7iv and I don't like the 4k editing problems ( my computer might be too slow, video upload to RUclips too long, etc) and I decide to record in 1080p. Is this 1080p good quality or less sharp? I heard that some Sony cameras have great 4k but not so good 1080p. If this is the case, perhaps it would be wiser to get Canon R with very good 1080p instead? Have you compared 4k and 1080p in new Sony cameras?
Hey WwtL, good Q. I personally haven't noticed the 1080p quality issues people talk about with Sony, but I'm not much for pixel peeping. I think the 1080 looks fine and I wouldn't prioritise that over other features as a big difference maker between Canon R and Sony options - definitely worth considering other features and price. Hey Dave, I shoot in 1080, my edits can be long and where I shoot is noisy and often we have to shoot on the scene many times to get something worthwhile My PC fires through 1080 footage like a hot knife through butter, though I'm thinking of some PC upgrades very soon as soon as AMD puts out the latest and greatest and moving to 4k I currently use a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X / 32 GB RAM / 1TB SSD and an ageing graphics card AMD RX 480 Graphics card What do you use and do you experience any slow down editing 4k? Oh and happy Christmas 😁🎅🏻

Your rig sounds plenty capable from what I know of pc world and 4k has some nice extra flexibility if your setup handles it:) What software are you using? I get the impression DaVinci resolve is well optimised on the pc side!

Hey guys, good discussion here:) You can zoom in to 4k clips on a 4k timeline and indeed out lower resolutions on a 4k timeline with no problem. They will be lower resolution but not necessarily visually noticeable. I do this all the time and have never noticed or had others point out issues. If you put 4k in an1080p timeline it’s still 4k so you have all the resolution info to zoom up to 200% and still have more total pixels than normal 1080p. Hope that helps:)
1080P seems perfect for vlogging unless you’re a super model…. I know a highly successful camera focused channel on here were recording in 1080 a year ago.
