Born in poverty in North Carolina, Sowell grew up in Harlem, New York.[2] Due to financial issues and deteriorated home conditions, he dropped out of Stuyvesant High School and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. Upon returning to the United States, Sowell enrolled at Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1958.[3] He earned a master's degree in economics from Columbia University in 1959, and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 1968.

As someone who has lived in several different countries and a person of color. My father is black and my mother is Vietnamese. I was warned before I moved to the US that Black people in America were perpetual victims. They were taught and nurtured a victim mentality from birth and had no real idea of their true history. I have to say it’s true. Racism is the excuse for every failure and every missed opportunity. I see it all the time. Will some people not like you because you’re black, probably. Just like some people won’t like other people because they are white, or they’re rich, or they are beautiful, they may be too athletic or too fat. There will always be someone looking for a reason to not like you. It really has anything to do with the race or even with you personally. The idea of someone paying reparations for something they did not do to people who did not suffer one day under slavery is asinine and boggles my mind. The kind of entitlement you must have to justify that in your brain is crazy.

"Equip yourself with skills people are willing to pay for".
Yes, it is really that simple. But, yes, making this happen can be very difficult. You have to see what the market wants and what you can provide based on your skill, interest, ability, personality, etc. There are many avenues that can teach you knew skills or enhance what skills you already have.
Despite how difficult this can be to achieve, how far are you going to get by sitting in front of a computer blaming the system and history and being the perpetual victim. Victimology doesn't pay.
Mr V, you've got a good mind, a good heart, a fun and seemingly outgoing personality. You also have one thing that many people do not; an open mind. You are sitting there watching Thomas Sowell, Jordan Peterson, etc and challenging your existing belief system. I think you have what it takes to find your lot in life. It's just going to take reflection, discovery, hard work, and resilience. I've got faith you. The biggest obstacle you have to getting ahead in life, is the man you see in the mirror every day. Well, the majority of slaves owned by wealthy Greeks were also Greek. How do we figure out whose ancestors were the slaves and whose were the owners? Here’s the thing they get wrong. Reparations weren’t just for slavery. After the abolition of slavery there were deliberate efforts to keep black Americans from succeeding. For example, in my city, there was red-lining. Black people were literally forbidden from living in areas with decent schools, resources, safety etc. this was still going on well into my lifetime. My grandfather got a free education from the GI bill. The bill specifically said black people could not benefit from it. That legacy has given me a benefit. When you deny education, right to vote, safety, healthcare etc to people for decades on end, the effects do not just disappear in a flash. Still in my city the schools in predominantly black neighborhoods are very deficient. As we speak, laws are being passed with the distinct purpose of making voting harder for people of color. This is not ancient history. It is now. And the fact that injustice exists around the world is no excuse for the wealthiest country to perpetuate it.

Slaves were universally treated as an asset just like your horse or car. Even free Slaves in the south owned slaves .....at least 1/3 of Slaves in the south were owned by former Slaves or freed Slaves. How do we pay reparation to former black slave owners?

I laughed out loud when you thought Indians were the first slaves. The first slaves were always our own people. But. What will blow your mind is, _who were the most enslaved._ It's right there in the word, slave. *Slav.* ...who are the Slav?
Anyway, if you want a dirty slap in the face of current education, look up "The real history of slavery" by Mr. Sowell. Then look up who he says *ended* the slave trade and how. Then buy his book 'black rednecks and white liberals' or listen to the audio book.
    It's a hell of a trip.

Here's the thing about reparations. We look back to what was originally offered. 40 acres and a mule. Since the government isn't realistically going to hand out millions of mules, we have to just convert that into cash, which comes to around $105,000. Totaling at about $6 trillion. Seems like a lot. Well, the $6 trillion is a lot, but could easily be spread out over a few years to be doable. However, that's not the number that matters. It's the $105,000 that's the trick. $105,000 seems like a lot to suddenly get, until you look deeper. The reality is that the average American is $155,000 in debt, and you can be damn sure those debtors will be grabbing for their cut right from the jump. So, after your mortgage, car lease, credit card bills, student loans, bank loans, and any medical bills are paid, you're still $50,000 in the hole. You've accumulated zero wealth. You're still in the exact same position. Sure, it's less overall debt, but you're still locked firmly in debt prison. So all of the political grandstanding that would go on would just be political theater. That $6 trillion the government shelled out would just get spread out to their cronies. And since the government doesn't actually generate any money itself, the American citizen would be the one footing the bill, resulting in massive inflation. So.... poor black people would, in reality, be paying their own reparations, while everything else got more expensive. This is the problem with a lot of the "feel good" solutions. Once you actually look beyond the superficial layer, not only does it not solve the problem, it actually makes the problem even worse. The real solutions are generally the unpleasant truths that nobody wants to hear.

I would DEFINITLY take 40 acres right now. You could make so much money off of that.

I'll let you in on a new thing I learnt recently.
I'm an old white Englishman from South West England. There's a video where Mr Sowell talks about what he calls 'black English' I be, he be, they be, dis, dat, dem... I grew up in that world, where many of the white English rural argicultural workers used those words, that was how they spoke English. I assumed that it was fading away due to time, and the world moving on, Kids receiving better language education, and world wide communication shifting the language to a more univeral set of words and phrases. I'd never heard of 'black English' until I watched that video. It seems quite a lot of what is called 'black English' is or was just English of the past as spoken by the white people I grew up amongst.
If you're watching him, you're on a path of opening your mind to information you've never heard of, let alone thought about, and that's how you get to be wiser.

Nice choice! I’ve always liked Trevor Noah and I could understand points from both sides of this conversation.
My favourite in this genre is John Oliver. Can’t remember if you’ve reacted to him but he has an interesting show on critical race theory. Or check out the season finale for the year 2020. Peace and love.

What you just watched was someone who knows that things that happened in the past were truly horrible but also not specific to one group of people. It was an educated, historically literate person arguing with a one idea victim mentality social Justice warrior that lives in an echo chamber. My opinion is listen to various viewpoints and do your homework before believing completely in any viewpoint. The more you know, the less you are blind to topics. Educating yourself is the key to being informed.
