Dude, no joke...your video has helped me to understand more about Linux than I've been able to pick up googling and experimenting the last 20 years. You are an excellent teacher. Good pace, good explanations, good attention to detail and explaining those details. ALL tutorial videos should be like this one. Great work.
The quality of this tutorial is absolutely incredible. It deals with absolutely all the doubts that arise to me and not only that, in addition, it draws attention to things in which I had not even proposed. I've watched many tutors on RUclips about many subjects but this is really one of the bests i've seen. All details are explained why one should do something and why not etc etc . If youre about to start Ubuntu server this is the Tutor to watch and help you get started!!!
Such a clear video, this should be a template for how all instructional videos are made. Nothing is missed out or skipped over. The commands are explained. The video stays on track without getting drawn into long discussions about different topics. Everything follows a natural logical order. Thanks for making. Subscribed

Wow! If I had found your channel 10 months ago I could have saved so much time. This is by far the most productive and valuable Ubuntu Server video I have ever seen. I have consumed 100’s of hours on RUclips learning how to setup servers. This 1 hour video just covered every topic I have been trying to implement. Cheers brother…I owe you a coffee. 😊
I want to express my appreciation for the effort, knowledge and skill you shared through this video. The pacing was perfect. I'm extremely grateful to have come away having learned something I'd been putting off for years. Thank you!
So easy to follow and covers everything I needed! You explain everything clearly, and are not cutting the video so often like other youtubers sometimes do which makes it hard to understand. Thanks!

As a digital forensic analyst and Cyber security company owner, I spend my life researching and learning from all available resources. This video is hands down, the best I have ever come across as an educational tool and guide on a requested topic ! Very well done and thank you !
This is really awesome, thank you. Very clear instructions with just enough context. In a day or so I was able to set up a server with unattended upgrades and cockpit, add docker, pi-hole and portainer, install a new drive and set up samba. And I learned a bunch of helpful stuff in the process. Thanks again!
This was just great, I've been wanting to setup an at home server for some time, and have been struggling with which system to use, I had been going back and forth between Ubuntu and Debian, this extensive tutorial sealed the deal, especially setting up Samba & going through adding users, the firewall, mounting drives, it was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! This vid will be a valuable tool going forward as I have successfully setup my first server, a Test for now, until I get my storage situated.
This video is excellent for understanding how a server is installed and configured. Videos like this are rare, great tips, technical, however, an easy to understand explanation and straight to the point. Thanks!
I recently found your channel and I am very impressed with how you walk your viewers through the whole process. I'm new to Raspberry Pi but going through your videos I feel I am ready to jump in. Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge. 😎👍
Absolutely brilliant thank you so much. I recently moved from Windows to Ubuntu As my daily driver. I was wanting to set up a server for a simple file sharing and a few other helpful services. This is a great beginners tutorial. Thank you again
I tried to follow along MANY guides on how to setup an automatically mounting drive and they all got very confusing. You made it look so easy and beginner friendly. This taught me more about Linux than several dozen tutorials and forums with people just saying "Type this and send us the output... okay type this and that should fix it" or "oh, you just type yada yada and that does it."
Haven't left a comment on RUclips in years however your instructional video by far hands down is the best one yet. Lots of content creators could learn a thing or two from you sir. You are one smart man. Thank you very much.
This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen about a topic like this. Even the fact you explain how to install SHH "again" is perfect. The different chapters in the video are really helpful too. And 'use your cursor keys to highlight it and use the enter key to select it' seems nothing but for a complete newbie it's can be the difference to be stuck or not. Then the RDP, webconsole with cockpit. beyond complete!
Easily one of the best, if not THE best - video on the matter I have ever seen on this platform. Everything explained in plain and simple manner, not omitting common issues one might have, like setting a static IP manually during the installation and so on. Perfection 😗👌
Wow, this is pure gold. 👍 I can’t wait to get my old laptop repaired and cleaned, so that I could use it as a home server with ubuntu, following these well-explained steps…
Dude, I don't even know linux and I couldn't stop watching this until I rolled up my sleeves and starting following your instructions. Now i'm hokeed up! What kind of sorcery is this?? Thank you so much!!!
As many others also have - I read the documentation and the manual but piecing it all together in a coherent way takes a lot more clarity, like the others I finally found your channel - Thank you so much for all your explanations and helps - they have given me the green light to finally set up my own server.
3 years later and apart from some different file names meaning you have to cd into the directory and type ls, this guide is still amazing. Thanks Bytemypi
Gotta tell you Byte My Pi, not only I won't forget your name. But your clarity and explanations where absolutely clean. I'm a total beginner, and this video made me love Linux environment. Thanks to you. Hope you can still make this kind of content.
Seeing as you have not posted for two years, you may have “retired “ and not monitoring RUclips, but I must comment. I am a retired system admin/ tech person. 35 years of mostly Windows, starting with just DOS. I dabbled in Unix and then personally with Linux. I now play with Arduino and ESP32 and some PI. Just now transitioning to micropython This tutorial has to be the best I have seen in all those years. I wish I could “buy you a coffee”. Thank you.
I know i am late to the party. I even created this account specifically to thank you for the guide! Perfect pacing and very friendly for a beginner such as myself. It even encourages someone to get into this even more! Hope you keep doing what you are doing with such proffesionalism and thank you so much again!
Thank you alot for this guide, Followed it back and forth a few times. It is so helpful. Some funny things in there as well "Automagically" lol. Was very fun following along with you, and you are very clear in what to do and informative, 11/10 guide! :)
Hey! Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I just set up an old laptop for use as a server and I used your video to get Ubuntu Server up and running on it. This was my first time installing and setting up a server. I followed every step in your video and everything appears to be working properly. Thanks again!!
Really beautiful work here. I’m fairly adept at Linux, but I’m constantly frustrated with what documentation takes for granted…you are not afflicted with this malady.
Such informative video. Just couple of days back I built my first system with Ubuntu server as a newbie, took me a whole day and countless blogs and articles and various different commands which would in turn do the same thing in different way. If only I found this video, it would have easily cleared up all my doubts. Hope the channel owner is doing ok, noticed he hasn’t posted anything lately.
I am just a computer science student but they don t teach us linux based systems and this is just perfect. Ty, you are helping students like me become better devs by setting up a server like real mens do.
Thank you for sharing such wonderful knowledge in this and other videos that you have posted. Your instructions in these videos were instrumental in helping me to set-up my first Ubuntu server. Since then I have also being successful in setting up Ubuntu and Debian servers with Docker, Portainer, Webmin, Jellyfin , Airsonic, Plex and Nextcloud. Much thanks to you being such a wonderful teacher. God Bless.
how did you configure the path for Jellyfin? since it cannot take an smb folder as a media folder? I tried /mnt/drive2/Media/movies but that didn't work
It is a great video for somebody who has some experience in using and administering Linux, but for somebody who has no experience at all it might confirm what is still being said: Linux is for geeks, for nerds, people who love the terminal. You give so much info in such a short time, typing this command, clearing the screen, typing that command. It goed all so fast that it might be overwhelming. For me, since I know pretty much all you explained already, this video is a great way to consider running a server myself. Since I run Fedora, I will also use fedora server, but that's beside the point I tried to make. As I said at the beginning, it is a great video, thanks for that.
Thank you for taking the time to put this video together, you've taught me so much! I just wanted to add that in the beginning of the Netstat section at 1:02:50 the descriptions for options -p & -n need to be switched around.
Byte - this video was easy to understand and well put together! As soon as I can find a spare pc that will do the job laying about I'm going to give the server build a go myself. Thank You.
Just wanted to send a personal note of gratitude. I always manage to get something wrong in my Ubuntu server setup - usually with static IPs and drive mounting. Let your video run in the bg while I installed it, and it helped. Thank you.
This tutorial was quite informative! I just finished setting up a server and having the foundations of a real server means I do not have to worry about a feature that I need to do lots of external research on, at least for the base. Excellent work, and it definitely is the perfect tutorial :0)
What an excellent explanation, y have tried several times to do this with varying degrees of success, but with this I could really understand and do things better first try. The cockpit part was cherry on top(new for me). Really thank you. Greetings from México.
Thank you for your video and it helps explain everything about starting a server. You have taken great care in your presentation where guys like me getting started, can gain insight on what is required to set it up. I plan to build a file server in the next few months and I will use your presentation to ensure I do all the detailed settings correctly. Thanks again.
Best video on ubuntu and ubuntu server. Thank you. Gave more help than just setting up a server. Explained things along the way that should (but dont need to be) understood.
I usually fall asleep watching tutorial videos. This tutorial was one of the best i have seen on ubuntu server and i set it up in proxmox and everything worked sweet as. I think it also helped that you sounded like 'John Peel' which kept hold of my attention span.
Great tutorial, i have a point to tell about nano, you can save directly (if you wanna reuse the name of the file) with CTRL + S, so when you press CTRL + X it will simply exit the editor since you already saved up the file, and in the tab completation tip if somehow exist more than one file with identical first part you have to write untill the shell knows what you want especifically
I'm just getting started, and trying to run before i can walk with Proxmox, pfsense, frigate, HAOS, but finding I need to slow down and learn basics. Have tried following web but your videos are just a perfect pace with good explanation, thank you very much indeed!
I always wanted to set up my own home server and this video is just what i needed. Easy to understand and answers most of questions I had. Thanks a lot!!!
This is the best installation video I have found yet. Thanks for posting it hope you make some more videos. Your the perfect pace for new users to follow and set up.
Just getting my server bedded in and I learned so much from this video. Not only that, but I managed to fix a few issues I'd been having. Thank you very much for this awesome video.
Hi there, just wanted to congratulate you on another very interesting and comprehensive tutorial video. I am an avid Linux user, I have been informed on quite a few pointers with this video -thank you. Look forward to more, cheers.
This video is so easy to follow! Loved how you explained each steps. Very beginner friendly! I created samba server in linux mint too following this video. So simple! Thank you!
I thought your video on getting started with Ubuntu Server is brilliant, the pace is really good for me and very clear, I’ve just finished the hardware setup for my home server and am at the stage of wanting to install and learn the Linux software.
My plan is to seethe mother board on board raid for all o/s software installed on the m.2 drives x 2. but I have a separate roc controler card fore the storage drives that will work with Linux software, the card is a Broadcom MegaRAID 9361-8i SGL do you have any experience of setting the card up with Linux software? I have 4 no. 4 TB Sata 3 drives that ideally I want to have the equivalent of raid 5. My motherboard is a gigabyte Auroras master x570.Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks Mark
@@markbarnes-rider7035 Hardware raid controllers usually take care of themselves and you set them up in the card's firmware (its a bit like going into your computer's bios, but just for the raid setup).
great video man, just not forget 2 things 1) that almost every time the Ubuntu server comes without nano or any other text editor, and be sure to install it in the home directory (sudo apt install nano/vim/neovim - whatever you want) and second thing is that editing files in the filesystem always requires SU "clearance" - thats why you need to write "sudo nano /file/you/want/to/edit/pathofthefile"
Thanks! Great content and got me up and running with more understanding. However, I kept expecting you to break in with "I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."- Del Preston, Wayne's World 2.
such an amazing educational video. goes through absolute basics while explaining thoroughly core concepts. great video will be using to setup my server!
@@bytemypi2918 Thanks. Everything is up and running. I only hit a couple snags when setting my wifi access as a static address but managed to fix it. Again, thanks for a superb video, very high quality, very useful.
Wow, what a terrific "hold your hand" through the entire process!

I usually do not subscribe to channels but this channel is one of a million which deserves a medal! A complete semester course... Thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for your support :)
You're welcome. Great to hear that you've successfully set up your first server. Thanks for your feedback :)
😎👍
No problem. It's great to hear we've got another Raspberry Pi convert :)
Absolutely brilliant thank you so much. I recently moved from Windows to Ubuntu As my daily driver. I was wanting to set up a server for a simple file sharing and a few other helpful services. This is a great beginners tutorial. Thank you again
You're welcome. Glad you found it helpful. Hope you enjoy your new server :)
I need a transcript of this tutorial to go over and over again with hands-on practice . Linux server with this video is a flex . Thank you
I tried to follow along MANY guides on how to setup an automatically mounting drive and they all got very confusing.
I know it's been a while since you made this, but I'm so happy I found it. It was immensely helpful!!!
Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated :)
This should serve as a role model for all RUclips computer related tutorials.
That is high praise indeed, many thanks :)
This is great. I really appreciate the clarity and completeness of what you've set up here. Thanks a million.
Easily one of the best, if not THE best - video on the matter I have ever seen on this platform. Everything explained in plain and simple manner, not omitting common issues one might have, like setting a static IP manually during the installation and so on. Perfection 😗👌
The best “how to” of any server installation I have ever seen!
Wow, this is pure gold. 👍
I can’t wait to get my old laptop repaired and cleaned, so that I could use it as a home server with ubuntu, following these well-explained steps…
Dude, I don't even know linux and I couldn't stop watching this until I rolled up my sleeves and starting following your instructions. Now i'm hokeed up! What kind of sorcery is this?? Thank you so much!!!
Kind of long video BUT everything I was looking for wa all in this video. And your your work, you have my gratitude dear sir. Wish you the best
Thanks for your support :)
As many others also have - I read the documentation and the manual but piecing it all together in a coherent way takes a lot more clarity, like the others I finally found your channel - Thank you so much for all your explanations and helps - they have given me the green light to finally set up my own server.
Hats off to you my friend. I was sitting in the back row and wasn't tempted to doze off, not even for a moment. Thank you.
3 years later and apart from some different file names meaning you have to cd into the directory and type ls, this guide is still amazing. Thanks Bytemypi
I'm almost completely new to Linux, and this was inexplicably valuable info for me, took lots of notes, thanks for taking the time!
You're welcome. Glad you found it helpful :)
It has taken a minute to find a really great breakdown of Ubuntu. I am coming back for more!! Thanks!
You're welcome. Feel free to browse around any time :)
Some funny things in there as well
"Automagically" lol.
Was very fun following along with you, and you are very clear in what to do and informative, 11/10 guide! :)
Thanks for your support, much appreciated :)
Hey! Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I just set up an old laptop for use as a server and I used your video to get Ubuntu Server up and running on it. This was my first time installing and setting up a server. I followed every step in your video and everything appears to be working properly. Thanks again!!
You're welcome. Thanks for your feedback :)
I've watched this video a hundred times and it gets better and better every time
I am just a computer science student but they don t teach us linux based systems and this is just perfect.
God Bless.
You're welcome. With all those installations under your belt it sounds as though you'll be teaching others soon :)
how did you configure the path for Jellyfin? since it cannot take an smb folder as a media folder? I tried /mnt/drive2/Media/movies but that didn't work
This is by far the best video on Ubuntu server! Thank you.
No problem. You're welcome :)
I am a newbie looking for content just like this. This is the best video I have seen on this topic. You are a great presenter!
One of the best tutorials, not just for servers but for Linux command use too.
Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated :)
Certainly the best tutorial there is about ubuntu server on yt. Congratulations.
Thank you for taking the time to put this video together, you've taught me so much!
I just wanted to add that in the beginning of the Netstat section at 1:02:50 the descriptions for options -p & -n need to be switched around.
No problem. Glad you found it helpful :)
Thank you.
You're welcome. Glad it helped :)
Even I have years of sysadmin experience, I still think this video helps me a lot to understand quite a few concepts. Thx you Byte My Pi!!
I will be spending time on this! THANK YOU
Truly the most comprehsive guide i've ever watched. always coming back to this
Best video on ubuntu and ubuntu server.
Glad you managed to stay awake :)
Your videos are positively the most informative and easy to follow on RUclips. Thank you very much for such wonderful and easy to follow videos.
You're welcome. Thank you for such encouraging feedback :)
That was the most brilliant content i've ever watch. Thank you so much.
You're most welcome. Thanks for your support :)
I'm just getting started, and trying to run before i can walk with Proxmox, pfsense, frigate, HAOS, but finding I need to slow down and learn basics. Have tried following web but your videos are just a perfect pace with good explanation, thank you very much indeed!
This is a great learning session from start to end Ubuntu OS.
We need more stuff like this!! Thank you sir!
You're most welcome :)
This may be the best intro video to Linux EVER MADE. Thanks so much. Cheers from Argentina.
Much appreciated, thank you :)
It would be awesome if you make another vid about making the server reachable from the internet. The way you explain things is awesome. Keep it up.
Thanks. Have you seen my video on remote access:
ruclips.net/video/7C2AGnr9Q-w/видео.html
This by far has been the best video on ubuntu server I've ever found online. You should do a deep dive on Samba
I always wanted to set up my own home server and this video is just what i needed. Easy to understand and answers most of questions I had. Thanks a lot!!!
You're most welcome. Enjoy setting up your new server :)
Best Linux server setup and introductory video I’ve seen. Great job.
Subscribed. Been putting off looking into doing this, but it all seems so intuitive when explained as well as this.
Hope all goes well. Enjoy your Linux server and thanks for supporting the channel :)
Hi there, just wanted to congratulate you on another very interesting and comprehensive tutorial video. I am an avid Linux user, I have been informed on quite a few pointers with this video -thank you. Look forward to more, cheers.
You're welcome. Always good to hear from another Linux user. Glad the video was helpful :)
Thank you so much for your light-headed, informative and relevant lessons!
Thanks for your support.
Excellent video , You covered everything i always need , I have learnt and understood many things from you.Great Work
Thank you, I was able to make a nice little markdown guide as I followed this process and will now be able to reference back to it any time!
This video is so easy to follow! Loved how you explained each steps. Very beginner friendly! I created samba server in linux mint too following this video. So simple! Thank you!
No problem. Glad you're up and running :)
I thought your video on getting started with Ubuntu Server is brilliant, the pace is really good for me and very clear, I’ve just finished the hardware setup for my home server and am at the stage of wanting to install and learn the Linux software.
Glad to hear its going well :)
Many thanks
Mark
@@markbarnes-rider7035 Hardware raid controllers usually take care of themselves and you set them up in the card's firmware (its a bit like going into your computer's bios, but just for the raid setup).
Very informative, I've always wanted to know how to setup a server. Cheers
You're welcome :)
great video man, just not forget 2 things
1) that almost every time the Ubuntu server comes without nano or any other text editor, and be sure to install it in the home directory (sudo apt install nano/vim/neovim - whatever you want)
and
second thing is that editing files in the filesystem always requires SU "clearance" - thats why you need to write "sudo nano /file/you/want/to/edit/pathofthefile"
I think this is the best tutorial so far. He is so precise and clear to understand. 😊☺
Hej!
Jag måste säga att detta är det bästa jag sätt på youtube någonsin, du är fantastisk.
The best teacher on RUclips! Hands down
Thank you for the best compliment on RUclips :)
Excelente, uno de los tutoriales más completos que he visto... Muchas gracias por compartirlo. 😁
nice, i followed the guide and now i finally managed to change my background.
Linux is amazing.
You're welcome :) Classic movie quote!
it covers enough and so much, not too complicated with just enough what you need to know....i am thankful
such an amazing educational video. goes through absolute basics while explaining thoroughly core concepts. great video will be using to setup my server!
Thank you so much for this one!! This tutorial got me into system administration. I got my local server setup for our business uinternal tools.
Am I glad I found this video before attempting to set up my first Ubuntu server... now! let's go do it. Thanks!
You're welcome. I hope all goes well with your first Ubuntu server :)
@@bytemypi2918 Thanks. Everything is up and running. I only hit a couple snags when setting my wifi access as a static address but managed to fix it. Again, thanks for a superb video, very high quality, very useful.
@@danielmorin6140 No problem. Thanks for your support.
Thanks for this. I watched this video over the course of three days as I got my server set up. Thank you so much.
No problem. Happy to help :)
Very helpful video - bridged the gaps that I was missing after watching other videos on this topic. Thanks!
You're welcome :)
Hi ! I wanted to thank you for this superb video, it helped me a lot to configure my first ubuntu server :)
Great explanation and video. Even us "old-hands" like your easy to understand delivery. Thank you
No problem. Thanks for your support, much appreciated :)
why do you put so much effort into teaching random people over internet? Your teaching method and the video is top notch quality!
One of the best video tutorial ever !!! Great work mate, and a BIG thanks for the info shared!!🏆
You're welcome. Glad it helped :)
