School Idol Project's dub didn't keep any of the "-san" or "-chan" honorifics either (the only Japanese phrases they kept were senpai, Nicochi and Kayo-chin).
I know that K-On didn't even try to get around it. Mio-Chan, Yui Senpai, etc. At first it's odd, but considering how tied it is to Japanese culture there was nothing really they could do. I think if they had to explain it like this, though, there would be issues. Idk.

(The names of the Sailor Warriors are still a textbook example here imho, so the old distributors as it seems were just like "well fuck it, let's craft our own puns and turn Serenity into Serena and 'How dare you??' into Darian" and so on. And I guess they also had to exchange their currency XD Lip sync is yet another problem if the honorifics are "all of the sudden" missing...)
The solution is really simple. Don't dub anything besides pre grade school children cartoons and don't ruin foreign media with garbo localization. Translate it faithfully. If someone is too simple minded or xenophobic to skip something because there's no dumbed down dub available - it's better to have them skip it than ruining ot for everyone.
I usually don't like dubs of cute-like anime's but this was pretty darn good, but I thought they would of dubbed it like they dubbed lucky star using "Chan, San, and Nea(?)-chan," makes me happy that they kept Zura though!

And Chika would be the voice of order in the end, that Dia should recognize her place in the group, and her acceptance of her place is the sign of camaraderie she is looking for. Thus, what the dub needed to do was to keep the "cringe" itself. The cringe felt by the audience when they heard "sweetie," "girlfriend," and "matey," especially as they appear in Dia's imagined scenarios, is a sign that the dub did its job well.
