I don't think Vegeta wanted to actually kill Gohan. I think he was giving him some tough love in a saiyan sort of relationship. That "a tough guy like you should be able to face the truth" was an important statement from Vegeta. At least in my opinion. He kicked his ass and Gohan took it like a man after scuffing him up a bit from "the strongest in the universe" at that point in time. I like to think Vegeta even let him land those blows and pointed out that he might destroy him one day to boost his morale in a twisted saiyan sort of way.
Thats how I always saw it. Vegeta did acknowledge Gohans strength quite a few times in the Namek arc I think that's also why Piccolo didn't get involved until he thought Vegeta was taking it too far.

No point trying to make sense of the filler so badly conceived Geets just turns up like the fight didn't happen in the next episode. Gohan's good. Everyone is cool with him (no comment on a return). If he wanted to box them up, there is NOTHING they could do in a straight fight. Vegeta (even without another zenkai) would slaughter them like animals. Gohan's last outburst was just enough to push back third form. This is a Vegeta that would obliterate that foe (that was well beyond Gohan's abilities). Piccolo was a form below that (even with his fusion). The filler and PL increases are just that. Silliness. Or did Vegeta in BASE get so capable (definitely another zenkai then **except from returning from death instead of near death**) he was able to beat down a Gohan that squared of with 100% Frieza? Absurd. No, none of the lot present had means to win this one in practical terms. Pickle actually doing smart conjuration to make some katchin binding might have been something. Hell, if he actually knew more than the reverse of ECW, it is possible to just seal Vegeta (still needs the tag and something to put him in for lack of hazard to dump him into).
If there was ever going to be a time where piccolo and Vegeta fought seriously Vegeta revived full health then they re-energize piccolo full health I think that's a fight we all missed out on it and that we deserved
