The art makes me wonder if Jim Lee and Scott Williams were inspired by this book. As for Barr, I have seen bits and pieces of his work, but another rarity of his was Maze Agency, which from what I read about it, was supposed to be a mystery series in the vein of Ellery Queen, where if the reader paid attention, had a chance to solve the mystery before the end of the story.
That comic is gorgeous, Nowlan is a beast! So this baxter paper is completely NON glossy, from what I can see... right? I don't have the comic so I'm not sure. Do you know if this was the same paper used for early Spawn issues? I remember the paper had a very nice wuality and bright colors, but it wasn't coated or glossy, so the flat colors looked actually nice, unlike the paper they use for current comics.
If you want to talk about developments in color in the 80's, go look at Barry Windsor-Smith's work on Marvel's Machine Man miniseries. BWS's work on old school newsprint was so unique...and brave! Never had seen anything as bold as it.
If only Marvel would understand that the glossy paper in their trade reprints needs to be coloured differently... They are way too bright, and way too saturated
Speaking of paper qualities: Back when I was working at a newspaper, we'd notice the difference even between different newsprints. I was in Ottawa, and our sister newspaper in Winnipeg printed one very white newsprint - they'd have to futz with the colour on pages we'd send them so the whites wouldn't get too white (teeth, for example).
How dare you dis my beloved Outsiders 😂 Honestly, I became a fan of all of DC's weird characters (Blue Devil, Firestorm, Booster Gold/Blue Beetle) because of their relaunched series right exactly when I was in my 12-13 year-old comic buying prime. The Outsiders fell into that same category... I had no idea who any of those characters were back then (esp. Halo), but it felt "new" and felt like it belonged to me at the time. 100% jobbers, regardless!
If you're interested in doing a Baxter vs Newsprint direct comparison: in 1987 DC started reprinting the previous year's issues of 'Legion of Superheroes' as 'Tales of the Legion of Superheroes.' I don't personally have issues to directly compare, so I can't say whether they recolored for the different paper, or simply transposed the Baxter color schemes.
I'd love to see you guys put some of Klaus Janson's coloring under the microscope. My recommendation would be his 5 issue Punisher from the 80's. It's a clinic in atmospheric coloring.
Nowlan’s work, which was always unique over the years, rilly pops with the Baxter process. The errors in this then “new” process were rife in other titles as artists/inkers/colorists adjusted to the higher quality production work. Nowlan keeps it all gloriously tight from start to finish! Excellent overview, Gents! 🖖♾
Oh BAYBY!!! think my one (minor) complaint about this art job is that Nowlan didn’t letter it himself, which is why you should follow up with an episode on his classic Manbat story from Secret Origins 39!, which I thiiiink Mignola owns all the originals from? Either that or New Mutants 51. Just sayin’. ;)
I have a problem sometimes with modern color that aspires to be (sometimes is) painting. It has something to do with the text clashing with the imagery, making both look isolated. This earlier way of coloring, done thoughtfully, integrates the elements by having line art and "line lettering." Having said that, I still think the coloring on Annie Fanny is exceptional in its genre. Kurtzman talks about using for real underpainting to hold his panels together, so you'd have a sort of marine blue background and all the shadows on figures would be in a shade of the same color. That'd be my request for a new video on coloring.
I'm sorry, it's so damn lame that you guys only have 37K subscribers and people talking about what Cyclop's laserbeams are made of have a million subs. BS!

I just found this issue this past weekend at Half Price Books. I’d already seen your guys’ video on it, so I knew I was getting some gold.
Same here, just found it in a .50 bin yesterday!

I have this Outsiders comic, and I always thought the colors was really popping. I really like Batman vs Kobra in this.
The army base at 10:30 is even called Fort Baxter! They sure were excited about their fancy new paper!

Kayfabe for breakfast.
Great job analyzing it. Brings new life to the comics for me. Thanks.

Around the same time there was a similar thing going on with New Titans and Tales of the New Teen Titans.
