  • No complacency - and the far right are a massive threat - but after 'centrists' nearly handed France on a platter to the fascists, the left saved the day.

Israel has approved the largest seizure of land in the occupied West Bank in more than three decades, according to a report released by an Israeli anti-settlement watchdog, a move that will exacerbate the escalating tensions surrounding the conflict in Gaza.

There is no alternative...

What Centrists seem to be unwilling to recognise is often when the left wing moves centrist the right wing doesn't copy it moves more right wing. See Brexit see Reform, see the Tories. Labour moved centre and they responded by jumping further to the extremes. Meanwhile voters start to think there is no difference between the parties and they just want a change and the far right emerges saying 'look at us!'

I would not write this election as a victory for the left. Because all parties had to join forces to prevent a united right. Because apart from the goal of preventing the right from coming to power, the left alliance has no unity. In addition, I would not pursue left extremist politics now, as this would only drive people from the centre to the right. That is what happened in Germany and the AfD became stronger every year.
France has three years until the elections and if the left is not careful, the right could become too strong.

Labour's descent into the Center began when they purged Corbyn from the party after all the media smearing of antisemitism with Starmer finishing the job of pushing Labour to the Right via purging all the remaining Leftists and adopting diluted Tory policies. Not only did Starmer's party get less votes than Corbyn did in 2019 (Starmer got 10 million this GE) but Reform getting 4 million votes show that Far-Right is on the rise in the UK.
Liberals dont understand that you dont defeat the Far-Right by moving further to the Right yourself to make party more "electable". By doing that, you are merely enabling and legitimating the Far-Right so there is no reason for the people to vote for you.

She didn't lose, she gained 60% more seats and got the most votes of any party by far. Her party is now the largest party, the left only "won" because they colluded and strategically pulled their candidates from the second round so their coalition would get more seats, despite the fact that the 3 parties in the coalition are polar opposites in many issues and there is no way they can actually form a government. And even if they did, have fun paying 100% inheritance taxes, green taxes, and letting basically anyone from Sub-Saharan Africa migrate as they please.

I've lived in France most of my life. Nobody won this election, the leftist alliance called the Nouveau Front Populaire is a very eclectic alliance. Let me put it this way: a vast majority of the French population ( 2/3) - left, traditional right and center, decided that it was better that the country be " ungovernable " rather than governed by the far right. Parliamentary chaos was chosen over far right order. It's the only choice we had and it became self evident. Macron wanted to reinforce his power, he weakened it. This is a country where the nation decided to overthrow their king : people are fed up with " la Macronie" - but there is no viable alternative yet.

    Thank you Owen!
Yesterday was a great day for democracy for sure!
The French people gave us all a priceless gift of love and hope for humanity - for inclusive human values over racism and violence!
    Liberty! Equality! Fraternity!
These are very turbulent times I agree. I believe the trajectory is towards consciousness and humanity is changing quickly (the fast and vast movement of information because of the internet is a big part of it) - so the forces of regression - old patriarchal values and hierarchical systems. - are fighting back, but ultimately the movement of consciousness will prevail!
    The Aquarian Age is here.
    Equality for all!
    Best wishes -

As glad as I am that a RN-majority in the French National Assembly was prevented, this is FAR FROM a humiliation of the far right.
They still increased their number of seats by about 60 percent.
And that only because the left and the center coordinated to maximize their chances in the second round of elections.
Unfortunately, we can expect that the French left will continue to waste time and effort on ideological trench warfare instead of on pragmatic policies.
If that happens, people will only get more frustrated and support for the RN will increase.

According to official French Interior Ministry figures, the RN led in absolute numbers of votes with 8.7 million, followed by 7 million for the NFP, and 6.3 million for Ensemble. There were 1.6 million blank or spoiled ballots, and 1.5 million votes for the right-wing The Republicans (LR) party. The NFP vote fell and Ensemble rose because the NFP largely favored Ensemble in tactical voting deals to block RN candidates: the NFP withdrew its candidates to back Ensemble candidates in 125 constituencies, while Ensemble supported NFP candidates in only 80. What is more funny is that they ended 3rd even if Bordella had already pronounced his victory speech one week ago.

The only way Palestinians can live peacefully, is if they have a more secular and less zealous government, such as Fatah for example.

It's a breathing space, and badly needed, but the fash will be back. There's less than three years to make the necessary difference, and that means an experienced improvement in people's lives and material conditions to separate the racists from their racist lies. I'm sure it can be done, but will it?

@@JLSMaytham Depends if he had knowledge of the lies being told. I doubt he did, so would count him as one of the 'lied to' rather than the liars. People are often taken in by political deception and I think the blame should be placed at the point of origin rather than the deceived.
