As a person who ice fishes in Northwest Iowa and Southwest MN, please be careful on that early ice. There are so many drownings that happen on farm ponds because kids go down to play on it. Might be a good idea to get an ice auger just so you can check the ice thickness. Personally 6 inches is my minimum thickness to go out on the ice.

Remember the ice can be dif thicknesses in dif places. A spring coming into the lake can be a thin spot or if there is snow on the ice it insulates so the ice does not continue to thicken. No one should ever go out by themselves.

Thank you for that info. When we had a pond here in the South I had to rescue adults from the ice. They just assumed that if it looked iced over that it was as safe as an ice rink. A person who falls thru the ice can DIE very quickly. On that sobering thought, enjoy the season!

As a child ( I grew up in New Hampshire) my grandpa would always verify the ice was safe by using an ax to see how deep the ice went. He was very adamant about ice safety because if you fall through, the current will drag you away and very little chance of getting saved.

Find out from locals what thickness is safe. They used to drill a hole and measure the thickness. I believe it is 6" for walking and 10" for snowmobiling. If someone should fall through the ice, rescue them by going on your stomach not walking out to them.

I had to stop watching because it was such a careless thing to do and even allowing the little dog to walk on the ice. When I was a young child we lived in Maine and had a pond by our church that we would play hockey on in the winter. My Dad was the youth pastor, so it fell to him to verify the ice was safe. He's a pretty big guy, so he would walk out to the center and jump up and down, and stomp all over to see if the ice would break. I remember one time it did break. He was very annoyed by that , and a lot more hesitant a couple of weeks later when he went to recheck the ice. But praise God he was the only one to go through, which was kind of the point. 😃

I couldn't watch when Seth started wandering further out. It's very difficult to rescue someone that's fallen through. I remember a high school student drowning trying to save someone. Sadly, the boy that was saved never forgave himself that his friend died saving him. From what I hear, he got into drinking and drugging. Guilt can demolish a family. Please don't allow them near it so early in the season.

Oh Sarah, your family is so fun! Your laugh is contagious. You are so blessed. Thank you for blessing us by sharing your family. I grew up next to two beautiful ponds in Montana. Hours and hours of entertainment in the winter months. I did fall through but was able to catch myself before going under. With the help of friends I was able to get out of that predicament. We went to the home where the mother was at work to dry my clothing. It was pretty scary and I guess I remember more then I thought I did. I definitely remember vowing with my friends to never tell our mothers. I lost my sister in a horrible accident when I was nine, she seven. I knew I could not put my mama through another tragedy. That winter definitely changed the way I felt about being on a frozen pond.

Time to buy the ice skates and ice fishing gear. Best way to test it is definitely not stepping off the end of a dock...lol. Start at the edge and slowly walk out. You can use an ice pick/auger to test the thickness by making a hole. To be safe the ice should be at least 4 inches. Remember that the ice is thinnest around the perimeter. I grew up next door to private lake. Swimming, fishing and ice skating filled our days.

My son was the exact same way growing up. He always walked around barefoot and in shorts, regardless of how cold it was.

I felt nervous for Seth being on the ice, but was relieved to know it's solid where he was walking. Brave boy. I wish I could dress as light as your children for the weather, but it's time for me to layer up(shivering!).
Josephine does look young and beautiful. I noticed the girls' resemblance to her since your first shared trip to Kenya.
However, Sarah, I'm still in awe of how your mother in-law and her children look like siblings.

Dear mom, please do not talk that way in front of your children.
    No heavy people testing here!
It must be a below freezing temperature for so many consecutive days to be frozen enough to support weight.
Your not there yet by any means!
And know that once the body is exposed to cold water it's ability to function is decreasing also.
So range of motion and ability to maintain motor skills like grabbing and gripping decrease rather fast.
Hypothermia is rapid to set in and serious.
I am not sure I would let anyone be on the ice without knowing for sure.
    Do some research first!!!!!

I’ve been in Hawaii my whole life and I can’t even imagine seeing a frozen pond in person. We do cardboard sledding on grass hills all the time. Try using a skateboard deck…the speed is awesome!

My only prayer in life is for people to care for the ocean. I’m a naturalist. I’m three generations from miami Fl. My activities with visiting my grandmother included boating daily and diving for lobster and fishing for local fish. That leads me to a topic not popular with my friends that have kids. And that’s balloons. The only thing worse than taking a brain coral or anything else that belongs in the ocean, is balloons. They are closely related to celebrating in most people minds. Not mine. They always end up in the ocean. People don’t dispose of them properly. Oh and please never release them in the air they mostly end up on the ocean or a body of water. Thank you rant over but it’s not a rant as it is more of a call to be aware of this. ❤

Oh that is one of the things I hate to see done too! They damage so much being released in the air! Animals eat them, get tangled in them, n they are also dangerous for our power lines!

To test the ice, drill down, there should be at least 2 inches of ice to walk safely. At least that's how we did it in Wisconsin.

In my town as kids before we could skate or ice boat on any of the ponds or rivers the police would drill a hole in the ice 6” then drive a car on it. Usually the temp. had to be in the teens for a week too. After all that, we were good to go. It used to be much colder when we were young.
