    I agree with John, some of his songs could have only have been written by him.

    Mr. Prine was a very sincere guy, but if Willie Nelson did do one if his songs, the songwriter would get the lion's share of the recording royalties, as well as performance royalties. Copywrite law has changed some, but in the old days, a big artist covering a song was a gold mine for the person who wrote it.

    The Bette Midler version is nice but I still prefer John. Th only song that's been covered that I could say is better than John's version is Angel from Montgomery by Bonnie Raitt. It's like that song was meant for her.
