Soil is also at the heart of growing most of the crops we rely on for food and other vegetable related products. And in recent years we have started to realise how soils can be degraded or enhanced by the way we treat them.
Treated well, soils can provide increased yields, increase biodiversity and sequester carbon.
In recent years No Dig gardening has come to the fore. It’s been at the heart of what our guest today, Charles Dowding, has promoted as the way to garden in harmony with nature and in some ways sits alongside Regenerative Agriculture but on a smaller scale.
As Charles recently wrote, “Soil is the most important part of no dig gardening. We don’t disturb it, and encourage biodiversity through feeding all the organisms in soil with compost and other organic matter placed on the surface.”
In this event Charles explains his philosophy and methods to help us better understand how No Dig can help us create more biodiverse gardens.

In these days, one can certainly be a "science denier" by employing actual science! I love the science of your experiences (with shared practices and evidence under your growing conditions) that can perhaps be critiqued or assimilated by other small scale practitioners -- or at least put in perspective under similar circumstances rather than a LARGER scientific community with their gram scales and funded research that may have a much larger controlled environment in which to come to more 'conclusive' determinations that might not be applicable to us regular folk "who may wear tennis shoes or the occasional python boot". Thank you, Charles (and Frank Zappa for the quote).
I agree, following scientific research too rigidly leads to completely wrong strategies in situations that the original observation did not match, which is most situations. I believe a lot of it is not relevant for regular life.
In which Charles gives a history lesson on "why four year rotation" revealing that sheep were fed clover and turnips from the garden. This is the kind of homestead integration many are working toward. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Charles I chose 120cm beds and 40cm paths, I chose 40cm paths because I measured my feet and I can fit them in to plant and weed, wheel barrow through the middle larger path. I missed your live today, so this is the next best thing.🙏💚😀👍

Many, many thanks for your instructive, clear and highly interesting video. I'm a little surprised that you were hoping for more commitment from gardeners and farmers. It's just the old rut and not questioning one's work and the exhaustion from too much wrong activity. Still, some might wake up and change everything. My first no dig gardening year is behind me and I'm by no means perfect, but I have a lot more time to try new vegetables and observe everything. I'm constantly composting all available green and brown materials because I need a lot more compost. I see that as a way, so I'm not worried. In a pinch, I just have to cover a vegetable patch to protect it from weeds. My composting plant has grown a lot and I'm only now seeing what nature has in store for us to turn it into valuable compost. I can provide for ourselves with excellent vegetables and fruit all year round and I am very happy about that. Your videos have opened my eyes. Thanks! Ursula from Bavaria
Charles and I both started by wielding the rotavator and then learnt that there is a better way.

Regarding composting, I breathed a sigh of relief, I created a compost bed with an A frame and used the old fence panels, with metal struts at the base so I could pull it up and turn the mixture. I did create a roof canopy as well, but, I imagine, depending on it’s position, it seemed to do better with that removed.
On the other side of the garden, it was completely overrun with ivy, which I subsequently trimmed, cut and sawed to manageable pieces and then compressed the heavier bracken under some broken slabs for the year, I’m not sure if that was strictly necessary, but I did get a bumper crop of tomatoes from I’m presuming a fairly peaty soil?.

How wonderful, so glad I found this, confirms most of what I have been doing instinctively, I don't have such good results but I think some of that is I am not so good at removing all the dandelions as I see them as food as well and also I have an electricity pole which definitely effects the tree next to it (one side taller than the other) and live next to a farm which sprays, and have to collect all my water, so it doesnt get so much in the growing months, but hopefully one day I will have a plot which is easier.
The dandelion has loads of medicinal uses, I am growing my own :D I'm also looking forward to making my own calendula cream. Made some teasel tincture too. We really need to look into plant medicine that rockefeller with his pharma destroyed.
I think you may have had the wrong Idea about Agricultural college , the ones I attended offered a pretty broad spectrum of agricultural ideas to pick and chose from. And welcomed contribution from students with experience of differing techniques.
I add rock dust to worms in compost that is maturing. No idea if it works
Dr Elaine Ingham teaches us to make compost in about 18 to 20 days active. 30 to 40 days total until ready to use. However we do use a compost container with open sides, aerobic decomposition happens better with more oxygen 😉. If you are patient you will eventually get usable compost, but our compost is @ biocomplete.
What is biocomplete?
I think Charles demonstrates a much simpler way than Dr Ingham's theoretical teachings. I've never seen her actual crops..

Is cotton burr compost a good compost to use on no dig garden beds? I live in USA Oklahoma zone 7.

If you planning bore hole Charles, may I suggest water test and check bicarbonate levels?
Was planning to buy poison but 'bottled out'.

great video. to help your weeding, try a "single tine" cultivator tool. It has been great help similar to a hoe but even more agile
The cobra head cultivator is a good example of this. It comes in a handheld and a long-handled version. Also good for drilling a line to put seeds in.

At the eleven minute mark, the aerial garden view is stunning, but will you say what is the orientation of your garden in this photo? Right being the small tree line. The left margin being the compost(?)shed. Where is north?
I wonder if someone can aswaer my quation please. I bought a lot of seeds in B&Q as they were going out of date, Dec 2022. They are 2 years old. Can seeds go out of date if they are kept dry? Paying 20p a packet instaed of 4 quid is a great bargain.

When you said 'you might have to go outside with a torch at night to reduce the population (of slugs)', I imagined a bunch of Americans with a propane tank and a flame, burning up the slugs in their gardens! I am sure that many Americans don't know you meant (in American English) a flashlight. 😆
From South Africa. We have had a very wet spring. I have 1000s of snails. Was looking at options to kill them with something. Was is a place today to buy and then thought, 'no, let it be'. So I agree with Charles. I hate pesticides of any form
An abundance of snails, hmmm...Can put them where birds can eat them? Can make amazing compost? Supply a restaurant for escargot? :))

As a scientist, I feel duty bound to challenge your tarnished view of scientists. A genuine scientist forms their opinion on the basis of peer reviewed science. If there is a knowledge gap, they will tell you and freely admit to not knowing. Regarding your anecdote, beware of non-scientists using the camouflage of science to persuade you of something you have good reason to believe is false. Multinational agrochemical businesses often make pseudo-scientific claims to promote their business. Before you too readily dismiss science as a whole, ask those making a scientific claim if they are a scientist. If not, ask them to direct you to the peer reviewed, published research which supports their claim. If you subsequently discover the publication is alone in making a specific claim, establish who has funded the research. It could be that an agrochemical company has sponsored the work and has a vested interest in a specific outcome. Sadly, today, this is all too common and it has led to the denigration of genuine, independent scientific research.
He's dismissing scientism, and he's absolutely right. I highly highly doubt you actually follow peer reviewed research, because research is too narrow in scope to be applied universally. Those studies just give mere glimpses of possibilities. It's an illusion of knowledge. Personal experience and experimentation is more valuable. I am a nutritionist and see the same in most health sciences.

Oh great! Another grower who lives in the middle of nowhere telling us about COVID. Very far removed from cities where we saw the full effects of COVID. You have no idea and shoukd keep to growing plants.
He's talking about the made up and continuously changing nonsense that was going on then. And it was largely based on prediction modeling based on often erroneous assumptions. He didn't say anything about covid itself.
