- In this episode I have a candid catch up with the legend Thomas Pridgen.
Thomas and I have talked about doing this for some time now so it was great to finally get on a call and dive into his story a little more.
This is a relaxed conversation, where we discuss his early years as a player including his lessons with Tony Williams, his impact on the drumming community through the rise of Gospel Chops, his time with The Mars Volta, and being a father of 3 as an active touring musician.
Thomas is currently playing for Residenté and Fever333, and can be found over on IG -

Thanks for the time Thomas 👊🏻
Great vid so far, excellent questioning and solid conversation. Only recommendation would be to add time stamps every once in a while when you transition topics (if you’ve got the time for all that lol). Feeling inspired to sit down on the kit today!
Great recommendation. Will do.
Thank you so much for the incredible interview Stan. I really do appreciate it. I actually just booked in for a lesson with Thomas and I’m super inspired by this interview. I really appreciate your time.
Finally watching this with my coffee this morning. So many great questions and little nuggets of wisdom here between you two, definitely going to watch this again to digest this properly. Thank you for this 🙏
I love this sooooo much and it's only 2 minutes in!
Duuude, this is insane we get to see this for free 😮
Thanks both of u legends for sharing that knowledge and conversation.
Learned heaps abt Thomas's history 👌 will definitely be one to come back and re-watch
Cheers dude, glad you enjoyed it.
So much respect for you guys. As a 28 yo young drummer from Turkey. It's always golden hearing from the real people.
Awesome stuff, Stan. Stellar interview, and great questions. I loved how you asked Thomas questions he’s never been asked in previous interviews!
Cheers man, thanks for watching. They were selfish questions haha
The best of the best in one video. Blessed to have watched this. Definitely giving this another watch.
Thank you for this. You're asking everything I always wondered.
Great interview! Thanks Stan, looking forward to part 2! 🥁
Luv it ❤ great, show, great insights 🙌 thank you Stan 🙏
Thanks man, I’m glad you enjoyed it
First saw Thomas perform when he was with with TMV, what a show and what a drummer!
Completely agree. What a weapon.
Shoutout to Que . He is to one in the beginning of that clip He still stands up and walk away from drums in the middle of playing.
The channeling energy thing was so real
Would like to know about zenith patrol, his recording process being so young at the time, some of his best playing on that album
Thomas got me playing with no shoes lol 25 years now
Haha, very cool
45:00 Deantoni is such a badass
About 17 minutes in now and just want to add: thank you of course for the designation of this interview. There is one point I must make here because it has been a deep point of contention in my journey especially among drummers of usually especially other cultures and often of older generations especially. And this very sentiment is so wholly encapsulated in its depth of dehumanization in your reference to the so called "dime-a-dozen (gospel chops) guys" who are not "properly" trained!? Excuse me sir. And your notion that those who "just play" are (somehow less in some way). First of all, and I know I haven't finished the video yet; so it's totally possible and I hope it is that by the end the overall tone reflects a depth of understanding that makes my observation here virtually irrelevant. But yeah... don't do that to us. Don't do that for our culture. Standing up for a true icon, Thomas Pridgen is admirable. Using him to simultaneously indoctrinate others into the same lies that seek to subvert Thomas's genius by seeking to basically legitimize formally a black God. Sir...
lol Thomas and Stan yikes . Shoutout to the homie …town bizz
👊🏻👊🏻
Music industry favors pop music 😂😂😂
💛👋👋💥👋🤟👍
Great interview. I think you’re giving all credit to the gospel movement and forgetting about guys like Virgil Donati, Thomas lang and Marco minneman. Those guys blasted into the drum scene and were doing technical drumming before the gospel stuff even took off. Much of what the gospel dudes do is just stuff from the progressive drummers before them. Gotta give credit where credits due.
Thanks for watching.
I’m not giving all credit to Gospel, and Thomas and I know full well where the movement was birthed from, but I’m also not going to spend my whole time with Thomas making sure we acknowledge every single ‘potential’ influence of the gospel drumming. A lot of this should be known already, as it’s your responsibility as a drummer to know your history.
I’m talking about the IMPACT the gospel drumming scene made.
@@stanbicknellGet him, Stan! Great interview mate. Thanks!
