    My guess would be it was added as these cars are like impossible to steer without it. I had 2 back in the day and you really had to have upper body strength to steer one that was not moving fast

      No doubt! My '70 Road Runner is a 440 six-pack, four-speed car, with no power steering, and no power brakes. That's a man's car right there, if you don't bench 300, it's a bit of work navigating around parking lots. I doubt many 120 pound school teachers test drove that car in 1970 and thought, "Oh yes, this will do nicely." My son's '68 GTO has no power steering and for some reason, it's a lot easier to drive.
