  • We had a blast talking with Darwyn Cooke, who was especially candid in this wide-ranging discussion that covers everything from his earliest days trying to break into comics to his first creator owned work Revengeance, which is coming later this year from Image Comics.
    Oh, yeah, and we also enjoyed of the original iFanboy founders and co-hosts: Ron Richards, Josh Flanagan, and Conor Kilpatrick. This weekend marked the first time we had been in the same room in about three years. It was a special weekend all around.

    Cooke's voice will be missed eternally in the industry, the absence of his artwork a gaping hole that looms over the industry for me. Thank you so much for sharing this video. Its awesome to see such a testament to the kind of person Cooke was, kind, and warm and funny - full of energy and optimism even in the face of what it feels like he must have certainly known was coming at this point. The world is a lesser place without him, but greater having known him. RIP and thank you for letting the world share in this moment and the genius of Darwyn Cooke.

    RIP
    The man I most looked up to in this industry, my everything when it came to comics. I Can't express how sad this makes me to know that he's past.

    The second Darwyn said "Get together for one last show" the first time viewing I knew he was hiding something about his health. I highly doubt we will ever see someone as creative and understanding as to what comics are meant to be as he was in the next 10 years. He's in all regards one of the best of all time despite his short time in the industry comparatively to many of his contemporaries and people before him.

    This was fantastic! Thanks for posting this, it was incredibly insightful and i love listening to Darwyn talk and speak his mind. I could listen to this for hours, 45 minutes was not enough.

    Fantastic interview, I agree with everything Darwyn said about the industry, superhero comics should be for kids.

    • @CaptainMarvel4Ever
      @CaptainMarvel4Ever 8 лет назад +1

      +Trevor Merritt Exactly, super hero comics should be for everyone, so it's awful that DC and Marvel aren't making them all ages.

      Yeah it's weird that a comic about a character as fun and silly as the Flash isn't for kids.

      Although I don’t know how graphic the scene in question your describing was, when I was a kid you had orcs being decapitated in lord of the rings, frieza being cut to pieces in dragon ball z, and an evil superman lobotomising people in the justice league cartoon. Not one of those bothered me or adversely affected me or anyone I knew who had watched those shows/movies. I don’t think we need to coddle kids too much. So is it a matter of presentation as appose to content? And where do you draw the line on what is and isn’t acceptable for kids? Also just to clarify for the discussion what age range are we considering as a “kid”?

    Everything Cooke said about Marvel/Disney & WB/DC’s perversion of comics so that they’re no longer all-age appropriate is spot on. Those companies have ruined the day when there was affordable and safe comics for kids. As much as everyone whines about the comics code, I miss it because I’d never let my kids read the absolute trash produced by Marvel/DC today.

    I think that many superhero comics are reliant on cheesecake art, dynamic violence, drugs, and sex. Though it makes money and reaches headlines, I do wonder if most superhero comics are decreasing in quality and sophistication.
    I'm really going to miss Darwin Cooke's presence, art, and voice in the comic book/graphic novel industry.
    Personally, I have a different beef with Marvel. I was a huge X-Men fan for 14 years, and saw editorial strip away so much talent and liberties from those books as the publisher's animosity towards 21st Century Fox deepened. I haven't bought a Marvel book since enjoying Weisman's Kanan. The FCBD Marvel books just seemed like paneled trailers rather than self-contained mini stories to whet the palate. I really miss the X-era of Mark Millar, and Grant Morrison, and Joe Casey.
