Omg , this popped up in my feed and I had to see it! I remember my dad and his fig tree. It was the ultimate signature gardening thing that the old Italian dudes would show-off about. 🇨🇦. Some would bury them in winter , some made structures with used windows , my dad heated his -lol . ( cheap electric heater)

Hi Gary, I am in zone 7B NC and I have the same problem with my figs putting on fruit but not having enough time to ripen. This year I am planning to pinch the lead stems to try to make them ripen earlier. Thanks for the videos! Dave PS... I did wrap two of my trees this year and although we got down to near 0, my trees made it through.
Tying the branches together is a great idea. This was my first year. I basically made a tent around the plants and filled it with leaves and pine straw.
Good demo for fig covering. I have a fig tree that is about 6 years old. I did not cover last year and paid the price. Many figs put none got ripe in time. I am in MD too. I will cover it this year for sure.
I got a fig Here in Long Beach, New York which is zone 7b and we have 8a microclimates that have Cabbage Palmetto and High Plateau Coconut Palm (which isn't a coconut but looks like one and is more hardy).
I use a light green tarp to cover the fig Bush preped pretty much as described here. I do use 12 to 18 inches of wheat straw especially on the west and north side . I'm getting lotts of figs this year from the protected Brown Turkey but the unprotected Chicago fig was killed back.
Can I ask very silly questions? I’m not an avid gardener but am learning to better my knowledge and skills. I was given three young fig trees recently and came home to replant them in three separate pots. I was told because the roots are not set in a new home yet the trees are vulnerable. So instead of keeping them outside in the winter cold I was recommended to bring them inside. And the sunniest area for any plants in my home is by my back door and windows. The back door and windows are in my living room which leads out to my patio. Fear of the cold draft that may keep them from growing I followed the instruction of this video. At least until their roots have set in their new home. Questions: 1) how often and how much do you water these covered up plants? 2) is it necessary to cover them up with the plastics too? Right now I only have them covered up in burlap. Wasn’t sure. Thanks for your channel!
If you have room indoors I would do that. They can take freeze but in small pots and not the ground, it might be too harsh. Outdoors I dont water if they are in the ground. Inside, just keep the soil dampish. how about moisture under plastic??? Would it be a good place for fungus to grow up? Shouldn't there be some ventilation by leaving some free place on the bottom that air can flow freely and remove excess moisture?

I'm wrapping my white Italian fig today here in zone 7a CT. It grows well but hasn't ever given me figs, so I really hope this works! When's the best time to unwrap it?
I have a white Italian fig here in zone 6A. Last year I had it in a big pot and I got good figs. This Spring I planted in the ground, not ripped figs yet but is loaded with new figs. Did you prune the fig last October or early March? Do you see wasps around your fig tree for pollination? They need pruning and pinching the top of brunches.

Can you please tell me how to wrap a 4 foot new Chicago hardy fig tree. I live in Bishop California, which is also zone seven. Is there anything else I need to provide to keep the tree warm, Christmas lights?, Pickle barrel? Thank you.
No a wrap similar to this would help but Chicago hardy figs can make it without wrapping sometimes in zone 7. So you dont need to over wrap them. Garage. They can take a light frost but when freezing nights come, just move it in the a garage. The soil just needs to be damp. It wont really drink much. Hi Gary, last fall I watched your video and wrapped my fig tree. I just opened it today, 03/28/2020. It worked and has active buds on the branches. Something I haven't seen for a few years. I have some white fungus growing on some of the branches. Should I be concerned?

Great video, Gary. I have a small, young fig (TX Everbearing) that just went in the ground this year. It is only about 2 feet tall and I plan to just pull a lot of straw up around it if we get the freezing temps we got a few years ago that lasted for days. Do you think that will be enough here in north Texas to keep it alive? (I'm talking if we have temps below freezing or cold winds for several days.)
See what the temp range is for the variety. Some go down to well below freezing. The key for figs is back to back to back days of deep freeze. That is why I had to wrap mine. An occasional day should not be an issue. The damage I would get is on wood above ground. The roots never got damaged.

Hi Gary, did this method help you to get edible ripe figs the following season? I'm also in zone 7 and my outdoor fig trees were dying back and regrowing as you described hence giving me no edible figs for the season.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I have a midsized in ground fig tree that is not in a protected site. Should I dig it up and store it in the garage with my other container fig trees or, move it to a more sheltered inground spot or should I leave it and wrap it up?
6 inches of mulch. I have 2 -7 year old trees that are 20 feet by 12 feet high. I haven’t wrapped after the first 3 years. Heavy mulch is key for the shallow root runners. I get tons of figs bc you have to water alot or you get no growth or ripening. I’m in zone 7 Pennsylvania.

Good question!. I wait untill the last frost date and look for a ten day weather forecast. If you get frost ten days past your areas last frost date damage will occur. but keeping the protected plant bundled up won't hurt it.
I bought my fig tree plants 2 years ago from Home Depot. The 1 plant bolted where as the other one barely grew to 14 ". This year the small plant finally started growing.HOWEVER...Just like this gentlemen, I live in Lower Bucks Co.,Pa. and Winter 2017 killed off most of my fig branches so when 2018 Spring came I though my tree was 100,% dead. However new branches emerged and as of Oct. 20 I have a bunch of useless gigs that will never ripen. I am donkey fall this man's directions to the T. Why? Cost fresh figs off a branch of a fig tree is so delicious. 8 hurts me to see all those green cigs going to waste I hate wasting food.

Maybe, in that case, the best option would be to build a greenhouse for the fig tree.
What about when the tree matures and the branches become thick? I have a rather large fig tree on my property but I'm really not sure how to wrap it short of just building a box around it.
The thick older branches do not, but all the new growth becomes really difficult to wrap when the overall width of the tree is like 9 feet. I've also noticed an overall decline in vigor these last few years in not just my tree, but all of the fig trees in the neighborhood.
Yeah that would be really difficult. I plan on cutting mine back every year. Some branches survived the freezes and at 2 or 3 years they were just removed. Ive seen some massive fig trees in Arkansas. They can get huge. You can get massive painter plastic with some good thickness. Fairly cheap. If several, with help, could cover the tree, they could all just be tied off at the bottom. The clear plastic would let heat in but they could be good or bad.

Thanks. that's just what I'll do. Another fig question. We bought a "brown turkey" fig two years ago from Home Depot. The reason I quoted that name is because the main trunk and branches of our fig are huge and not very flexible. Actually, the only flexible branches are from this year's growth. Is there a way to determine if we do, indeed, have a brown turkey fig and if not what type of fig we DO have?
@@jkburbage59 I saw both Brown Turkey and Hardy Chicago at a Home depot several years ago. I have both type. The Brown Turkey fruit will be quite dark, the Hardy Chicago more of a green with yellow fruit.

plastic has no insulating values but is usfull in keeping wind and rain off the branches. Burlap wrap is often used but I make a wheet straw area around my plant and cover with a tarp. Put a few mice bait trays at the base of the plant or you may have mice girdle your plant. Good luck with your figs

But why are some fig trees advertised as hardy to zone 7 when they really aren't? I'm totally confused about this. If they're truly suitable for zone 7, then there is no special treatment that it needs.

Hi Gary, I am in zone 7B NC and I have the same problem with my figs putting on fruit but not having enough time to ripen. This year I am planning to pinch the lead stems to try to make them ripen earlier. Thanks for the videos! Dave
PS... I did wrap two of my trees this year and although we got down to near 0, my trees made it through.

Tying the branches together is a great idea. This was my first year. I basically made a tent around the plants and filled it with leaves and pine straw.

Good demo for fig covering. I have a fig tree that is about 6 years old. I did not cover last year and paid the price. Many figs put none got ripe in time. I am in MD too. I will cover it this year for sure.

I got a fig Here in Long Beach, New York which is zone 7b and we have 8a microclimates that have Cabbage Palmetto and High Plateau Coconut Palm (which isn't a coconut but looks like one and is more hardy).
I use a light green tarp to cover the fig Bush preped pretty much as described here. I do use 12 to 18 inches of wheat straw especially on the west and north side . I'm getting lotts of figs this year from the protected Brown Turkey but the unprotected Chicago fig was killed back.

We wrap our figs with burlap and twine, then fill it in with leaves. Never thought about the plastic, may use a tarp. Odenton, MD here.
Can I ask very silly questions? I’m not an avid gardener but am learning to better my knowledge and skills. I was given three young fig trees recently and came home to replant them in three separate pots. I was told because the roots are not set in a new home yet the trees are vulnerable. So instead of keeping them outside in the winter cold I was recommended to bring them inside. And the sunniest area for any plants in my home is by my back door and windows. The back door and windows are in my living room which leads out to my patio.
Fear of the cold draft that may keep them from growing I followed the instruction of this video. At least until their roots have set in their new home.
Questions:
1) how often and how much do you water these covered up plants?
2) is it necessary to cover them up with the plastics too? Right now I only have them covered up in burlap. Wasn’t sure.

If you have room indoors I would do that. They can take freeze but in small pots and not the ground, it might be too harsh. Outdoors I dont water if they are in the ground. Inside, just keep the soil dampish.

If frost has gone, you can undo it now. It is really to protect agains freeze. A minor frost is fine, it was the long day of freezing temperatures, you were protecting it from.

I've had my fig tree for about 3 years now and yeah I'm getting sick of tired of the fruit not ripening up because there too late in the season so I'm going to prepare my fake trees this year cuz I love figs but I'm not getting enough of them to do anything with thanks for the video

first time for me I will try to remember and let you know but there is a you tube series somewhere that I watched that shows they do;
I have cloned other plants like jasmine grapes and black berries; they worked good; oh and hardy kiwi
how about moisture under plastic??? Would it be a good place for fungus to grow up? Shouldn't there be some ventilation by leaving some free place on the bottom that air can flow freely and remove excess moisture?
There is enough ventilation but if you are concerned, you can can the top a bit.

I'm wrapping my white Italian fig today here in zone 7a CT. It grows well but hasn't ever given me figs, so I really hope this works!
When's the best time to unwrap it?
I have a white Italian fig here in zone 6A. Last year I had it in a big pot and I got good figs. This Spring I planted in the ground, not ripped figs yet but is loaded with new figs. Did you prune the fig last October or early March? Do you see wasps around your fig tree for pollination? They need pruning and pinching the top of brunches.

I did not have issue with that. The top is usually vented a tad and that lets out excessive heat.

Can you please tell me how to wrap a 4 foot new Chicago hardy fig tree. I live in Bishop California, which is also zone seven. Is there anything else I need to provide to keep the tree warm, Christmas lights?, Pickle barrel? Thank you.
No a wrap similar to this would help but Chicago hardy figs can make it without wrapping sometimes in zone 7. So you dont need to over wrap them.

Hello Gary, thank you for your video is very interesting, this spring I bought my first fig tree, I have it, in a big container, do you think the best way will be bringing in the house, or in the garage, and what about the water do you still put watering your fig tree, with all the preparation that you done on yours.
Garage. They can take a light frost but when freezing nights come, just move it in the a garage. The soil just needs to be damp. It wont really drink much. If you bring it inside it will mess up dormancy and bring all kinds of insects in the house.

Hi Gary, last fall I watched your video and wrapped my fig tree. I just opened it today, 03/28/2020. It worked and has active buds on the branches. Something I haven't seen for a few years. I have some white fungus growing on some of the branches. Should I be concerned?

Great video, Gary. I have a small, young fig (TX Everbearing) that just went in the ground this year. It is only about 2 feet tall and I plan to just pull a lot of straw up around it if we get the freezing temps we got a few years ago that lasted for days. Do you think that will be enough here in north Texas to keep it alive? (I'm talking if we have temps below freezing or cold winds for several days.)
See what the temp range is for the variety. Some go down to well below freezing. The key for figs is back to back to back days of deep freeze. That is why I had to wrap mine. An occasional day should not be an issue. The damage I would get is on wood above ground. The roots never got damaged.

When they are dormant, do they need water? My figs are in containers. If I move them into the unheated shed do I need to water them?
I don't think they need regular watering. If it goes in damp and stays damp but not soaking, they should last.
yes they need some, not much....imagine if they were in the elements. i made that mistake

Hi Gary, did this method help you to get edible ripe figs the following season? I'm also in zone 7 and my outdoor fig trees were dying back and regrowing as you described hence giving me no edible figs for the season.

I have never thought about fig smoked brisket.
I did it with chicken legs. Amazing.
6 inches of mulch. I have 2 -7 year old trees that are 20 feet by 12 feet high. I haven’t wrapped after the first 3 years. Heavy mulch is key for the shallow root runners. I get tons of figs bc you have to water alot or you get no growth or ripening. I’m in zone 7 Pennsylvania.

Good question!. I wait untill the last frost date and look for a ten day weather forecast. If you get frost ten days past your areas last frost date damage will occur. but keeping the protected plant bundled up won't hurt it.
How big is the tarp?
my fig branches are not flexible like that. making it quite hard to tie.

I bought my fig tree plants 2 years ago from Home Depot. The 1 plant bolted where as the other one barely grew to 14 ".
This year the small plant finally started growing.HOWEVER...Just like this gentlemen, I live in Lower Bucks Co.,Pa. and Winter 2017 killed off most of my fig branches so when 2018 Spring came I though my tree was 100,% dead. However new branches emerged and as of Oct. 20 I have a bunch of useless gigs that will never ripen. I am donkey fall this man's directions to the T. Why?
Cost fresh figs off a branch of a fig tree is so delicious. 8 hurts me to see all those green cigs going to waste I hate wasting food.
Maybe, in that case, the best option would be to build a greenhouse for the fig tree.
What about when the tree matures and the branches become thick? I have a rather large fig tree on my property but I'm really not sure how to wrap it short of just building a box around it.
The thick older branches do not, but all the new growth becomes really difficult to wrap when the overall width of the tree is like 9 feet. I've also noticed an overall decline in vigor these last few years in not just my tree, but all of the fig trees in the neighborhood.
Yeah that would be really difficult. I plan on cutting mine back every year. Some branches survived the freezes and at 2 or 3 years they were just removed. Ive seen some massive fig trees in Arkansas. They can get huge. You can get massive painter plastic with some good thickness. Fairly cheap. If several, with help, could cover the tree, they could all just be tied off at the bottom. The clear plastic would let heat in but they could be good or bad.
If you had used the bubble wrap, where would it go? Outermost layer, or between the black and clear tarps, or between the clear tarp and the burlap, or under the burlap?

Yeah, Zone 7 too but you get much more mild nights. We get full long freezes.

Yep work well. Last year I was lazy and didn't cover it and it died back to ground.

Another fig question. We bought a "brown turkey" fig two years ago from Home Depot. The reason I quoted that name is because the main trunk and branches of our fig are huge and not very flexible. Actually, the only flexible branches are from this year's growth. Is there a way to determine if we do, indeed, have a brown turkey fig and if not what type of fig we DO have?
@@jkburbage59 I saw both Brown Turkey and Hardy Chicago at a Home depot several years ago. I have both type. The Brown Turkey fruit will be quite dark, the Hardy Chicago more of a green with yellow fruit.

Can we just cover it with plastic alone?
I like 2 layers at least.
plastic has no insulating values but is usfull in keeping wind and rain off the branches.
Burlap wrap is often used but I make a wheet straw area around my plant and cover with a tarp. Put a few mice bait trays at the base of the plant or you may have mice girdle your plant.

But why are some fig trees advertised as hardy to zone 7 when they really aren't? I'm totally confused about this. If they're truly suitable for zone 7, then there is no special treatment that it needs.
We are right on the edge so a longer freeze damages the wood. Just depends but Chicago Hardy is best.

Only winterize your fig trees with this method if you would like to kill them.
There is a lot of figs on how to cover fig trees for winter, but none showing how does it look when uncovering it, would that be cuz none of this cover your fig trees for winter doesnt work 🤔🤔😂😂😂
Probably just boring LOL. The goal is to protect the wood. This really helps a lot. Especially when planted on southern side.
